im guessing the return spring was not working, so the previous owner ghetto rigged that bungy cord to act like the return spring?

the only place i was able to find a return spring was at a nissan dealership parts department. there are also two little plastic bushings that the spring pops into that you'll probably want to replace. its a bitch to do but worth it if you have dead pedal, or in your case the ghetto rigging.

yeah your spring return is most likely broken, the little u-joint the spring rests on probably ate the metal of the clutch pedal, i would post pictures but photobucket is being weird, rebuild the clutch pedal.

That spring up there works more on the push then the return. I would guess the pressure plate is gone first followed by the the MC and SC.
