i need your opinion...even if i had the money, do you guys suggest i go with the swap? does it cost a lot to maintain the car w/ the sr instead of the ka? or is it about the same as any other car...i dont know a ton about cars, but i do enough about them to do a lot of my own work on them. and how much knowledge do i really, really need to know when i did the swap? is it pretty straight foward, like plug it in and go (i know it cant be that simpe) i just never heard anyone really talk about this aspect when putting it in their car.
just curious to what ya all have to say...

kid..wants sr? hmm..
grow some hair on your nuts first
seriously
use the search fucntion and read old thread. 98% of your qs can be answered there.
but my peeve:
THE SR IS JUST AN ENGINE
IT IS NOT GODLY
IT IS NOT INVINCEABLE
AN ENGINE.
take care of it as u would any other
not plug and play. take it to a shop if you dont want to risk damaging it.

It's OK to want, but know what you're looking at, search for some of the great KA vs SR wars and see what the stock engine can do.
But mainly!!! Can you afford it? If you are going to have mommy and daddy pay for it, you don't need it.

I don't get mad. I just lock posts and edit stuff. Anyway...
The SR motor is a good choice if you buy a car with high-mileage or blown engine. If you buy a low-mileage car, get a turbo for the KA. Either way you go, it will be in the $3k range, and take 4-14 days, depending on your mechanical knowledge. Either one is not a job for the feint of heart, and will cause headaches.
And finally, any engine will take care of you as well as you take care of it.

haha..i know i am. its funny. makes my day go by faster too.
big dreams? Yes and no. i have plans but i have the money overtime to back it up. i do thing in phases, and my suspension phase is nearly over. engine is next (s14 SR20det in my s13 w/ about 250 RWHP before it goes with lots of head work and cams and such BEFORE it goes in..basically will go in completed as far as basic mods go-yes i do have the money for it, no its not a pipe dream)
my dream was just to hit the track, which i do nearly 2 times a month or more. drift events and so forth..
i hate internet drifters and big talkers. that's just me. im a sarcastic punk who likes to givepeople a hard time when 99.99999% of the time they can find the answer by some research. i work hard for my car and every penny spent i do it out of my pocket.
i really have only one dream for my car. drive iton the track drifting. what it takes to get there, i find out more and more after each event what i need to tune and improve.
people think the SR Is some godly engine that will dominate. its not. there are KA-Ts out there that will eat SRs alive. there is justthe reverse too. i am sick of people who slap on a BOV and thnk they are hot shit. its a joke.
you dont need an SR to drift. you dont need an SR to have fun with your 240sx. learn to drive first, learn to work on your own car, learn to tune your car well enough. then when you are ready go SR. there is so much you can do pre-sr to get ready. i already have started my stuff, and i'm still leranin about my car and handling and suspension
maybe i'm just an old grumpy guy (23 yrs old)
oh well. live with it.

Lol!!! Imagine how I feel. I hang out with Dousan almost everyday!!! Oh the torture!!!
But Dousan has his feet on the ground with this stuff. He doesnt have unrealistic expectations and he's doing things in the right order. Which is more than I can say for myself in the early days.
I do think he got a little of his anti SR propoganda from me though.
I'm thinking of starting a new army, the KALF, KA Liberation Front! We're gonna rip all your worthless SR's out and drop KA's back in!!! And we're not going to give them back until you learn to drive!!! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
damn I hate slow days at work.

crioten - you are in St. Louis right? Why dont we meet up sometime this month and you can ask questions in person. I will be building a SR from the ground up starting next week if you want to get a real good look at what one looks like apart. It will be done by the end of December though and back in the car by the first week of January so not alot of time to waste! LOL Once I have the car on the road again I'll take you for a drive. I own several SR's but I am not anti-KA unless I am talking to a die hard KA, anti-SR guy then KA SUCK!!! Anyways drop me a e-mail, I will have my 92 with 97 KA back on the road this weekend.

I'm still learning but here is what I can say:
Getting the SR will require you to do more maintence than the KA. Premium gas only and let the car idle for awhile better cutting it off....unless you have a turbo timer. It's not straight forward (plug and play) and I recommend you learn alot (because you need to) before getting a SR. Just remember its the engine....the heart of your car and not something you want to f-up on.

yea, I'm a kid that wants an SR too!. an sr20de!.
yes, i would like to see what it is like to have a lower displacement high revving engine in my car for a change.
(puts on flame retardant suit).
Turbo can wait, the car is enough for me as is (that fiesty lil bitch, that they call my car, argh..)

ok ok, this is kinda off this threat, but I want to see what yall think. So, if the engine is the heart of the car... the ECU would be the brain, right? and if u have a name for ur car like Lucy or something like that. My question is... if you swap your engine and change your ECU... does your car wake up as a different car? and so... do u change her/his/its name?
ponder on this my children...

haha thats freakin' funny...
but please correct me if im wrong (still a newbie) but isn't the sr a bit more expensive to fix for the simple fact that the motor isn't produced in the us?

no its not. aftermarket and stock support for the SR is relatively easy. sometimes takes some time and research but its not that difficult .not like owning a skyline. that would be more difficult. sr can use some parts off the sr20de and so forth

well, i hate those people who cant buy their own stuff...i have paid for everything i own, i paid $3k in cash for my car, my parrents said if ya want it, you pay for it. i was looking at general comments as to what ya all thought of a kid(17 years old) owning a sr. its a goal of mine, and i am very interested in learning more about my car, thats why i have tried to set up meets...but nobody made them lol, but anywaysi have worked my ass off and saved the money, so i wont have to get mommy to buy it for me =)
and as for the maintenance part, i see people posting on how little they need to do, but i tried a search to find more info and didnt see anything about it...thats why i asked...
it comes down to i have the money, but do i really want to invest into this? is it worth it?

Now that comes down to you and your personal preference. I'm just like you when it comes to working my a$$ off for my car. But since you still have alot to learn (same as me) I suggest you drive your car stock for awhile to get a feel for it. Oh yea you can work on other upgrades such as suspension/brakes and sound system.
But like I said it all comes down to you and what you want to do with your money. You can take our opinions (and bashing) either way you like.
There's no reason for you to rush on a swap or go turbo unless your engine has high mileage, your engine is blown, you have the $$$ right there right now, or your car feels like its about to die.....which is my case sometimes.
