I bought the fram high mileage oil filter and Mobil 1 Full synthetic high mileage 10W/30 oil the other day. Was wondering if these were good or not. I'm a little concerned about them because they say they have additives to help the seals and such but have heard bad things about additives so wanted to get opinions on these before using them. I've been using the normal mobil 1 full synthetic oil 10W/30 in summer and 5W/30 in winter for a long time now but never have used the high mileage 10W/30.

thanks

If you have KA just use STP oil filter. but if your running SR use oem oil filter.

Fram is garbage.
Mobile 1 is ok but not truly a full synthetic anymore.

I used royal purple 10w-30 and a Wix filter in my SR.
Now I use European blend Castrol 0w-30 in my Z with a K&N filter (though they are overpriced).

I bought a K&N filter the other day. Thinking about getting 5W/30 mobil 1 sythetic instead of the 10W/30 high mileage that I got. I read even if its hot climate the 5w/30 works fine then I don't have to change in winther.

I found this on the internet (searching for oil filters) came up with this. Alot of you guys say to install OEM oil filters, after reading this I think I might stick with K&N oil filters for my SR. Let the pictures do the talking...

Rather than just say Fram filters suck, it's important to point out reasons why, In my case I had 3 out of 4 consecutive fram filters after 3,000 miles break their retaining spring for the bypass valve, seems the fram's are using a cheap piece of plastic there. Basically this means after stomping around on it and getting the bypass to open up a few times, it ends up sticking open and so you get zero filtration till your next oil change, oops.

I'm using mobile 1's now out of habit (and have yet to see a stuck open bypass valve), although there are many other good options. ^^

At no point does he say which filtering media is actually better. He only says the dimensions of the media are different.

I've heard of more people having their engines fail due to oil simply because of starvation issues (not enough oil put in) or not changing their oil properly (putting the filler cap back on, filter falling off, plug not torque'd right / falling out..)

IMO, which of course I don't claim to be an expert, any filter and any oil would be ok. Older engines, bad seals, and significantly long-term use of poor quality products or maintenance would cause failure. I think the discussion between synthetic and regular is just BS and mostly opinionated. I'm not saying they aren't different, but I am saying that they aren't that different.

Let's face it, if you drive your car 200-250k miles you're probably going to be sick of it anyways.

If Fram really was that terrible, you'd see tons of cars on the side of the road w/ blown engines. I'm sure alot of people use them. Would I use a cheaper Fram filter of race event? Maybe not, but that's just my opinion- not fact.

if you have sr engine, can you use 240sx oem filter that you get at dealership? or you have to get sr engine specific filter?

where else do you guy get oem filter beside dealership, they charge a ton.

if you have an SR you use a SR20 filter off a sentra.

but i personally just get the OEM Silvia oil filters from a local dealership that imports them, and run either eneos/motul/royal purple 10-30 or something similar.

all around $ 7-8 a liter

4bangers, try looking at thenismoshop.com...that's where I got my SR20DET oil filters. it's true though, the ones I got were made in China

you were buying sentra oil filters too there is no oem silvia filter that differs from the sr20 filter here for a 200sx.

I'm running the OEM oil filter or either a K&N on my SR20. As for a oil, usually run the Mobil 1 syn 5w-30 or 10w-30. I've had the royal purple stuff in tranny's and engines and I've had bad luck with royal purple. Also have tried castrol 5w-30 syn and thought that I didn't hold up as well as the mobil 1.

Oem oil filters
castrol gtx 10w30 in my sr.

Change the oil often.

I figure (this is just a feeling) that I'm better to buy "cheap" oil and change it often, then buy expensive oil and change it at a greater interval.

15$ for castrol
40$ for mobil 1

I change my oil about once a month, or after every 2 events.

use what you want, but try http://www.filtermag.com

Testing one out right now. It traps smaller particles with magnet power! Seems pretty reliable. My motor has been happy. I don't think there's any real downsides to it. You probably spend more on dinner for you and girl, so try it out. $45 for the RA-250 (for harder driving) or they sell the smaller model SS-250 with smaller magnets.

This was on a Honda though, the same rules don't apply.

The main reason I use a K&N filter is because you can use a 1 inch socket to remove it. There's one thing I hate about doing an oil change on 240's is taking out the oil filter, especially where its located. Those oil filter tools never to shit for me. I just did my oil change today with Mobil1 10w30 full synthetic and a K&N filter.

ditch the FRAM filter

I'd use Mobile 1 filter or Bosch Prem filter, over OEM filters

open up a FRAM and OEM and they are basically the same

stay away from High Mileage oils they just use different additives to try to fix leaks by making the seals expand.

i go back and fourth between wix filters (napa-gold or genuine) and Purolator Pure-One filters. Amsoil makes a killer filter but its $20, so no thanks. I also use the slightly larger filter for the larger or older VQ engines as the mouthwashed size spec filter is just laughable.

I go back and fourth with oils too, usually Valvoline full-syn, Amsoil full-syn, or Penzoil full-syn. I just changed my oil and got 5qts and filter for $28.

Now im considering switching to the KA/300ZX spec filters as it is considerably larger.

open up a FRAM and OEM and they are basically the same

you cut them open yourself? where did you get that info? I know the OEM filter has a paper endcap, but i thought the filter media was better (either design or media itself)

I go back and fourth with oils too, usually Valvoline full-syn, Amsoil full-syn, or Penzoil full-syn. I just changed my oil and got 5qts and filter for $28.

You know, Valvoline Synpower is only $18 at walmart for the 5qt jug.
