View Full Version : Questionable weld quality on Megan Racing Type 2 Exhaust?

I just saw a thread on FA regarding a couple people having problems with welds for the muffler hangars failing on Megan Racing's Type 2 exhaust. Apparently even someone at an exhaust shop who installed this exhaust on a car said the welds didn't look sufficient. Has anyone on here experienced problems? That thread was definitely something that I didn't want to see after installing the same exhaust on my car yesterday...
Here's a link to that thread:

Dude you can re-weld hangers, It's not really that huge of a problem. That's the kind of shit you have to deal with when you buy cheap parts. Hell the good exhausts have hangers break from time to time.

You can't seriously be unaware that megan is cheap chinese crap? have you been living in a hole or something?

Well not everyone has immediate access to a welder. I'm not a fan of exhausts with 5"-6" tips and this was the only one I could find that was what I'm looking for. So Megan Racing is garbage quality?

I don't read tech articles every day. I'm simply asking if anyone on this board has had problems with welds breaking.

Christ, I wish zilvia was like it was back in the day when someone could post a question, get an answer, and not get bandwagon-flamed.
If this thing really is a POS, then I'm just going to go get a custom exhaust made and send this one back to FR Sport.

Bandwagon flamed? Only 2 people have posted here and as far as I can tell neither has neg repped you, which is what constitutes flaming. YOU are the one jumping on the megan bandwagon so I don't see how you can call me and thatguy, who also happens to be a mod, bandwagoners. If it breaks, go to a muffler shop and they can re-weld it, no big deal.

Megan is shit, you should've went custom.
There is your simple answer.
The same answer that has been given time and again.

I've seen people raving about their products on here so I thought it was legit.

Ok, bro. That's all you needed to say in the first place.

I used to work for a shop that had a great thing going with Megan (this was years ago, btw), and got everything that Megan made for S13's for free basically. I've found that the weld quality isn't bad at all - if anything, what's bad is the thin ass metal they use in everything. Sure they say it might be stainless, but everything that's broken on me has broken right behind a weld (the metal just rips off). This includes exhaust canisters.
Like Racepar said, it's not a huge deal, you won't "break down" because your exhaust hanger broke... a muffler shop will fix it right up for $10 or so.
Edit: that being said, all the exhaust's I've had since were either high-quality JDM or higher-quality custom.

I have said that, in pretty much every exhaust thread I have commented in (There have been a few).
I have a custom 3" on my car. Sounds better than most of the aftermarket set-ups I have heard on 240s. I have the parts listed in my Gallery as well as in numerous threads, since I have answered the "custom exhaust" numerous times.

Haha..yea megan is shit, I agree with ThatGuy. However to ThatGuy a simple response to his question would be. "If your worried about the welds breaking have a local muffler shop beef them up, or just let it go and worry about it when one does break. Considering it takes a few minutes to actually weld a hanger on."

Hell, even quality exhaust breaks. I've had my Blitz break a hanger. Not break the hanger where it was welded but rip a nice chunk off the muffler itself. Again not a big deal...had a muffler shop weld a thick plate over the hole and rewelded the hanger to that plate. Never had a problem after that till I sold the car 5 yrs later...
You bought a cheap exhaust and saved money on it, if it breaks, who cares, you still saved $300 from the name brand stuff like HKS, Blitz and other $500 exhausts. Whats an extra $50 to beef it up or fix it when it breaks? Again, there must be a muffler shop around where you're at...

Yeah I had a badass Apexi exhaust that I bought brand new.
A couple of years later when I took it off to sell it I noticed that the hangers had cracks at the welds.
Shit like that just happen.
Just beef them up if you want to.
Still just metal at the end of the day anyways.
Who cares.

One thing that made me think a bit about the Megan exhaust is on heavythrottle's site. I've pretty much have always thought that HT is a great place to do business. I've also been under the impression (as it seems) that they don't sell just anything.
They have a megan racing exhaust for $370. It says that it has a 12-month warranty. When I think of parts places that carry only parts they will stand by, I think of these guys.
Now, this doesn't mean that I'm gonna go run out and buy something from HT just for the hell-of-it. I think that ANY part can crap out on you for whatever reason. If you buy something that is worth a few bucks, you should make sure it has a decent warranty.
