View Full Version : patience waiting for 2010....

so im having a real conundrum of a problem right now...and im wondering if anyones in the same boat (and yes this has to do with cars)
right now im absolutely BORED with what i drive...i own 2 cars...1 is a my white 1993 onevia im sure some of u have seen (the token hotwheel sixty eight wheels car on here lol)...2 is my daily beater 1987 nissan hardbody base model (complete with NO power steering...its awesome)
ive been working on a new 350Z shirt to bring out for the last week and a half (just playing with a new style...finding something that looks cool enough to present to you guys takes a little while longer than you may think)...ne who...starring at the 350z has REALLY started to eat at me
what im left thinking to myself is...do i sell the S13 and the truck to pick up a nice "newer" 350z...or do i torture myself everyday until nissan officially fricken announces the new silvia and wait for that to come out in 2010???
dont get me wrong...im a DIE HARD s chassis fan...i have loved all of 4 of my S13s more than most people love their children (its true....i swear)...but as of late...my life is getting to the point where i want a new car SO BADLY...and not just because i want something new and blingy and what not (and something that doesnt have a million and 2 mystery rattles)...i want something i can travel out of town on business with and know that its going to be reliable...that i can get gas for it ANYWHERE (i run E85 in my S13 right now...not exactly easy to find all over the place outside of vegas)...i love my S13 to death...but its becoming a more and more difficult thought of keeping my s13 for other reasons than a weekend fun car to put-put around in and go to the occasional drift event with (cant daily my car...too many car thieves around vegas want 240s now and ive lost 2 S13s to accidents daily driving them...people like to run into me..not fun)
so yah...i guess the question remains (for myself and im sure alot of other people)...should i just say screw it and buy a 350Z or wait until the magical and wonderful day that nissan brings the new silvia to a dealership near me in 2010??? ;)

Used Z ftw.
Or used 1 series.
Seriously your S chassis is almost 2 decades old. Time to get a new car.

well im a big fan of the FM chassis period...ive driven a few 350z's and if the new S chassis is ANYTHING remotely like the 350z (which i know it will be given its being built on the same chassis)...then its gonna be one hell of a little car...and will be worth the wait
i am a very patient persion for the things i work tword in life
i guess i would just be alot more relieved if nissan just fricken came out and announced a release date and showed some pics of it already...the wait for OFFICIAL information is the hardest part sometimes

Buy a better car.
I loved my 240SX when I drove it and continue to like working on such an easy car, but this brand loyalty people have seems retarded to me. There's people who would buy the S16 if it ever comes out even if it looked like shit and drove like fuck just because it's the 'new' model. That kind of dedication makes no sense to me. Nissan makes a good product but there's far more superior cars out there. The 350Z is decent platform but the interior is put together like ass, they could have done a lot better with it. The S16 will be even less of a car to be able to compete with the market when it arrives.
I'm saving up to get a used IS-F.

Z's are fun and reliability is a thing of fucking beauty. 2010 is a LONG ways away to deal with cars that you are growing tired of RIGHT NOW. If you can afford to, go with the Z

Definitely Z. Boosted 350's are goddamn insane. So much torque. Don't wait on a rumored car with questionable performance when you can get a tried and true car now.

exactly, I hate my car the most when i am not driving it. Start to think that maybe I want something else. But than when i do drive it all i can think about is how awsome it is.
Nothing beats an s chassis. I couldn't see myself in anything else in the near future

for the money you'd spend on a z, you could do something much cooler with a 240sx.

I am not too knowledge-able with obd2 and beyond but
doesn't it make any good tuning difficult or a hassle when emissions rolls around?
piggy back = not that great
standalone = great but doesn't work with emissions
rom tune = not common/difficult (but I do not explore this subject much)
imo, if it doesn't come turbo from the factory why bother if its obd2 and NA
I can see why the whole evo/sti market is doing well, up to a point.
new cars to me seem like more restrictions, but usually do not come with the stamp of street racer like older ones do (because $$$ = get out of jail free when driving normally on a nice looking/newer car)

I like my 350z a lot. Its pretty quick and though i miss the FI feel, it is so much more quiet and comfortable than my s14 so I love it.
A popular tuning option on 350zs is UTEC. Its a piggy back, but if you are FI, you can have it read from a MAP sensor instead of MAFS. Other piggy backs are not that great because the ECU will just learn itself back to stock if its using the MAFS still.

I'd personally dump that money into a 240 and wait for a new car, I was in the same boat my spec v is paid off and I was this close to buy a new g35 coupe but thought why bother my DD is reliable and its paid off I'll just drive the crap out of it and buy a new car in a few years. I picked up the 240 as a project so I won't get too bored and get that new car itch again. If they do announce the silvia though I'll probably be lined up to test drive one :)

The potential for $5+ a gallon of premium gas, a v6, and a car payment have been the turn offs for me when considering getting a 350Z. Yeah my 240 is old but it is free and clear, clean, great on gas, and cheap to insure/register. But that is what makes me happy. You do what makes you happy. At the end of the day that is all that matters.

I'd probably just get the 350z, and like others said, "Just sell it when the s16 comes out." That is if you actually LOVE the s16. Hard choice, but no matter what anyone says, you'll still make the final decision!;)

It's not going to be an S-Chassis car. The S-Chassis is dead.
It's going to be a modified FM car.

I am in the same predicament as well. I got a fd3s for the time being. I will sell it this year because it a money pit. Im sort of itching to pick up a used corvette for a nice dependable car.
The 2yrs wait is quite long. For my 240sx, I just bought me a ls1 mounting kit so it wont be that bad. Plus I never really got tired of my 240sx. I get more tired of wheels than the car ( I think I am on my 15th set of wheels)

honestly...it wouldnt be so annoying if nissan would just announce the goddamn thing already (new silvia i mean)
i think my biggest thing right now is parting with my car and knowing that the person who buys it isnt going to take care of it the same i did...theyre going to take it out and beat the mess out of it...or its gonna get stolen because theyre not going to garage it
im starting to get a headache from thinking about it so much UGH *cries*

well i was planning on a 2003 or 2004 Z as they are getting much more affordable now...the s14 isnt even on my mind...still too old of a car
S chassis are just getting to the point where they are more of a restoration project than anything else...trying to find a good condition S chassis that hasnt been molested is getting damn near impossible now...i got EXTREMELY lucky when i bought my coupe...it was in good shape exterior and interior wise...but it had SO many problems outside of that...engine leaked TONS of oil (swapped my SR back in after 2 weeks or owning it)...my KA PS pump blew up in my drive way
i think maybe my tastes are maturing a bit now that im older and have a bit more money...i guess i just want something that isnt on the "most stolen cars" list...the 350z doesnt have the same theft and vandalism problems that the 240 does as the car isnt affordable by alot of people for the most part

I'm kinda in the same shoes. Don't really wanna sell the S14, but I'm tired of DDing it. Trying to decide between buying a DD (third car... I have an S13 that sits in pieces as well). or selling the S14 and using the funds from that + money I'd pay for the DD to buy a Z.... mmmmm Z. I think i'm gonna hold out. I don't consider my 240 "done"... and I hate to leave a project unfinished.
Depends how long you've been into the 240 game as well. Things get old after a while... its over 3 years for me... I think I gotta few more before I move on.

Get rid of the hardbody and get a 05+ frontier, I would keep the s chassis. You will miss it. Since you want something reliable and newer and can be a daily, I would get a newer truck. I love my 06 frontier crew cab 4x4. Its a little beast. I have taken it on many road trips, chicago twice, florida once. Its very reliable and roomy. For a v6 4.0 its quite powerful and fast for a truck. Its pretty quiet on the interior. Its the reason road noise, rattles and humms bother me now. Guess you can say it spoiled me. Its a blast in the mud and snow. Besides you never realize how useful a truck is once you are without one. The S chassis is paid off, its not costing you anymore than insurance. You wont get much out of selling both so why not keep one?

wow, I would think that being over 25 would drop your insurance rate a lot
when I bought my DD (06 spec v) 2 years ago they wanted 350 for my head because of two prior violations
now I am down to 250.
add cobb to the exception of piggy back controllers as well.
you could always import something else, heard nevada is one of those states that one can DD a s15, skyline, or some other random car just like arizona. but importing is like another 5k on top of whatever price the car is selling for.

well i have a previous accident on my account from getting tboned...not even gonna go into that situation as it was COMPLETE bullshit that i got blamed as i was the one making the LEGAL turn...stupid north las vegas cop
i called geico back and messed around with the insurance a bit on the phone with geico...i can get it down to 350 a month if i picked up a 2003 350Z...just need to find out how much my monthly payments would be if i socked an extra 5 grand on to the car at purchase (and save the rest of the money from the 240 for goodies for the Z...cant roll around on stock suspension or rims now can we)
and...to answer the question above about the new S chassis (or whatever you wanna call it)...its SUPPOSED to be in the 20-23 grand range...brand new 350Zs are in the 34-42k range (depending on trim level...i believe the NISMO 350Z is like 48 grand...yikes)
vegas has one of the WORST insurance ratings in america right now...vegas is a town that in 2000 had 400,000 people in it...were now over 2 million i believe...and that was over the period of 8 years o.O...with tons of people comes tons of horrible drivers
i swear people in this country take their license for granted...shit...in the UK you have to take a test PER engine size...hell...from what ive read and been told...in japan you have to take a course for 6 months just to get a license (please correct me if im wrong)
enough whining though...the light is starting to get brighter again at the end of the tunnel

I'd say just wait. The 350Z is a great car, but I think it's a little overrated (yes, I have been behind the wheel of one)... just not worth that insurance rate mainly IMHO.
I thought this was going to be about the R33 GTR. In 2010 the 95 GTR it will be 15 years old and can be imported to Canada. yase!
There's already a few (illegal mind you) kicking around. Last thing Canada needs is MORE imported Skylines... I swear I see at least 3-4 a day now. Fun car yes, but there's nothing unique about them anymore

meh just find a clean 350 chassis and then just grab one of the hr's or 3.7's
I spoke with an importer a while back and they said there are just barely starting to get Hr's and 3.7's already but they run a good premium like 2jz's and some rb's
a good 350 body is like 11~15k ish

Seems pointless b/c a low mileage HR will run you 3k then you need ecu/bcm/nats to go with it probably add another 1k for that...you can't just mix and match ecu's its a lot more complicated with the 350z.

Want a Skyline? I'll go steal a black R32 for you... There's sooooo many here that whoever I steal one from will have another before I get yours somewhere to stash it. lolz
Skyline ownership in Canada basically spells "fanboy" to me... everyone's getting one. I know a lot of decent and non-fanboy types who own them too, but generally it's becoming the fanboy car here. I would say (where I live at least) they're more common then S-chassis's.

The new 240 is based on a shrunken FM package. Plus it is rumored that Nissan is leaning towards a 1.8L engine with variable valve on intake and exhaust.
Being that its a new generation of car it will probably weigh more (like all other cars when the newer models come out) like in the 3000lb range.
Depending on what you like about the 240, the new model's power to weight ratio will probably not be too impressive (stock). And the whole reliability thing goes out the window when you start replacing warranty-ed parts in lue of more power.
As much as my heart wants to say "hell yeah, I'm headin to Nissan as soon as they announce it," I can't help the fact that I'm probably gonna need a test-drive and read some reviews before I throw 22-23 grand at Nissan.
I love my 240 because of no car note, warranty is expired (so I can swap out whatever I want with no reserve), and my insurance is $80 bucks a month with full coverage. And thats with 10 speeding tickets in 3 states and a pending DUI! My insurance would be pushing $450-500 a month in somehting new.
Either way, choice is yours, your gonna do whatever you want.

if u really want a Z that bad you should just buy one now and test drive the silvia when it comes it. if u like it then trade the Z in for it, or you can always pick up another s13 for the weekend later on. i fully understand having a hard time letting go though.

my insurance is $80 bucks a month with full coverage. And thats with 10 speeding tickets in 3 states and a pending DUI!
ummm...that's something you should NOT be proud of.

did you try getting liability for the 350z with some comprehension coverage, so basically its covered for if it gets stolen, and obviously if someone crashes into you, minus you crashing it by yourself
thats what i did with my r6, and insurance was pretty damn cheap
oh and if all fails, just buy a used bike? lol
just a thought

You need full coverage on any car that the bank still technically owns. I would keep full coverage anyway its stupid to have liability only on a Z.

350Z's are ugly in my opinion, the only new car I'd want right now would be the Hyundai Genesis coupe.
