View Full Version : Port and polish
Since I am home for the holidays I am going to change my timing belt so I do not hear that #### clicking anymore. Since I am going to have a alot of my engine apart already I was thinking about taking the head to my local machine shop to have it port and polished. I have a S14 with about 80k miles on; so what kind of HP gains might I expect and how much does the port and polish job usually run? Thanks guys.

Depends where you take it. A good head job will cost anywhere from $600-$1000 or more. A place with some KA experience would be preferable. Also look into having it shaved too boost the compression ratio a little, but you will need the adjustable sprockets from JWT so you don't throw off your timing. It also might be a good idea to take in your intake manifold and have it ported and gasket matched for optimal gains. As far as power output, I would guesstimate anything from 5 too as much as 15 to the wheels, this too may even be a little conservative, depending on if you have aftermarket cams or not.

It's not an HP gain so much as a regain of lost power.
