as you can see from the pic there is no LED so I can't check for codes on my e5 ecu. I've read on here that others have wired up the consult port but I don't want to spend the money on the software/cable etc at the moment.

So question is...can I just soldier in a 12v led?. Anybody tried it before? I have experience soldiering pc boards so I'm not woried about that.

Yes, you can solder in a 12v led. Yes I have.
Psss, the cable can be made for free/or cheap and the software is also free.

If You still choose not too build your on consult box, You can hookup the check engine light, to read codes. It's pin 24 (red) and runs with the consult wires, if hooking up consult or not. If you're a tech head, like me, you would have already jumped a the chance to add another computer to your car....;)

Making/buying a CONSULT cable is probably the safest & most useful option

Something you may find interesting.. Since the S2 RB25 ecu doesn't have the potentiometer OR LED, you can short two wires together for 2 seconds, then if your CEL is properly wired up, it will flash out the codes. The ECU pins/wires to short are CHK and IGN (both are for CONSULT I think).

It might work on other LED-less ECU's, I have no idea. If it burns up your ECU I am truly sorry -- maybe you should research this a little more for your application 1st :) Just throwing it out there since I just learned about this the other day & odds are it works for your ECU also..

GL and post up whatever you end up doing

edit: didn't see/realize you still have the mode pot.. if your CEL is hooked up you should see the codes on the CEL instead of the LED without messing with shorting wires together.

you should still be able to read codes from the gauge cluster. consult kicks ass, especially with nistune or calumsult realtime software!!!!!

haha my friend and i were triping out because mine doesnt have one either

I don't appear to have a check engine light in my cluster? :keke: I've never seen it before and I just went out to double check. Where's it suposed to be? I have an 89 if that makes any diffrence.

Anyway, after chatting with another member I'm goning to try hooking up a test light to Pin 24 on the ecu which is the Monitor check Lamp (red) (fault code lamp output) according to our SR20DET faq. At leat this will allow me to pull the codes for now until I get the balls to solder in that LED. I'll let you know if this works.

As for the consult. Do 89's come with a consult plug? I've read here that they don't although I have some type of weird plug harness thing dangling near my fuse box. The idea of runing nistune or calumsult software is intriguing.

ka24e (1989-1990) s13 does not come with a ddl connetor. you will need to get one from a junk yard and hard wire it to the eccs harness connector. its not really hard to do, i did it.

my guage cluster doesn't have the check engine light printed on the cluster, but it does have the light. if its not too much trouble, you should pull the guage cluster and see if there is a bulb for it there. you can always put the ecu into diagnostic mode II and see if any lights blink on the cluster itself.

Well, that didn't work very well.

First off, the ecu plug does not have pin 24 wired...so I had shove the test light down inside, nothing. I took off the back of the ecu to make sure I was actually making contact with the pin, nothing.

Next I tried just checking where the LED solders in with the test light, one lead lit the test light and stayed on, the other did nothing. I assume one is positive the other is negative. I decided to touch the LED to it and nothing...hmm. The LED is a 12vdc 20ma.

Next I decided to try and make it throw a code to see if that would do something. I ran it for a few minutes pulled the o2 sensor plug and then the maf. I figured that should have done somethin... but still nothing.

Any suggestions?

you dont need to make it so it doesn't throw a code. if there is nothing wrong with your engine, you should get code 55. 5 slow 5 fast blinks.

no lights came on, on the guage cluster, after putting the ecu into diagnostic mode 2?

forgot about the code 55. Nothing changed on my gauge cluster. According to our FAQ pin 24 is the monitor check lamp (fault code lamp output) which I assume is the check engine light. If thats the case it is not wired, there isn't a wire coming out of the ecu there

did you put the ecu in to check mode?
if not you will only get a solid light from the led and nothing from the cluster light output
turn the ignition to on, not start
turn the ecu screw all the way to the right
let it sit for at least 2 seconds
turn it back to the left
then it will give you codes

Look at your harness depin any wire you're not using. If you have a 5speed depin something like, 28 - TPS for A/T or any of the consult wire you not gonna use.

Label that wire Check engine, plug the pin in the location 24. If you found the wire that leads to the dash for check engine light. hook it up. Bam check engine light, Thats all it take from the ecu side, but if your wires are screwed on the cluster side of course there's no light.

Not recommended,
disconnect battery hook up test light to positive terminal and probe the dash connector for the check engine light.

Recommended,
get an fsm and follow the diagram.

tt99ol - I did exactly as you described to put it into check mode...still nothing.

cotbu - Thats a good idea. I know there are few wires that I saw not being used. And I have an FSM for my model year so I should be able to get it working...we'll see.

Update:

So I finally got motivated and wired up my check engine light. Had to pull out my guage cluster b/c there wasn't a bulb in that socket but after it worked great. I accidentally cleared the codes last time I tired to get it to work so It's just giving me code 55. Guess I'll have to go drive it around. Thanks guys!

BTW anybody got a link to a DIY consult box, download etc?
