Could my tranny be defective? HELP

i just bought a 5 speed tranny to replace my old one with a defective reverse. Now, on the "new" tranny i just installed the shifter and tried to shift through the gears and it only goes into 1st and 2nd gear. Now, i'm stumped. How can i be sure that this tranny is not defective?

It's a 5 Speed ka tranny.

has the trans been sitting for a while? Might need to get fluid in it, get the clutch bled right, and try again. Sometimes things get seized.

the tranny should be able to run through all gears regardless of if theres fluid in it or not. you may wanna try spraying some pb blaster inside the trans (through the fluid fill or drain plugs) sometimes if they've been sitting for awhile they'll get a lil rusty. but if you can't get into those gears with the tranny out of the car i can't see any reason to bother installing it.

Yea, I know it should be able to shift without fluid in it, but with some fluid it might free it up.

I'm having a similar problem with helping my friend in his swap. Goes through gears fine when off but turn the car on and push clutch in but still no going through gears.

dump a can of marvel mystery oil or 3 in 1 oil or some atf or engine oil.
anything that is thinner and penetrates. put like a cupful.

Used a whole can of wd and turned w/ hand, still nothing, tranny's f'd, anyone in ny have a ka 5 speed tranny f/s?.

i had a similar problem. had to press in the clutch to go throw the gears. mine was sitting for a year. just put some supertec (walmart special) in there. :P
