I have a '91 240sx that apparently has the California ECU, and it is throwing one of the codes that is only on that ECU (code 35, not 34, sorry). I can't seem to get rid of it - can I put a normal KA ECU in the car to just get rid of that code and the check engine light?

Knock sensor=code 34. It can be the sensor or the wiring to the sensor is tempramental.

hmmmm mine throws that code all the time even after a new sensor, but the cell never comes on...

Oh, sorry, its not code 34, its code 35 (exhaust gas temperature circuit). In my book it says only Cali ECU cars will throw that code, so the question still remains - can a normal ECU work in a cali car?

who cares if the light is on. with a normal ecu , the light doesnt come on when you have codes. you have to go to ecu to see if light is blinking.

When the CEL light is on the 240s run a more conservative fuel map (richer)...or so I was told by a few people, is this correct? Its my drift car and I need all the power I can get out of it and with the CEL light on its sapping power away for no good reason. I wouldn't care otherwise.

Yeah, when the CEL light is on on my dash I go to the ECU and do the troubleshooting process. It blinks the code for 35...

Sorry OP don't have any troubleshooting info for code 35.. GL

Re: code 34. hmmmm mine throws that code all the time even after a new sensor, but the cell never comes on...

CEL doesn't come on for a code 34. And BTW you keep getting that code because your wiring to the KS is shorted out. Open up the harness under the hard plastic protector on top of the fuel injectors, you'll find the short in there when you trace the KS wire.. Thank me later when your KA actually has it's normal power level again!

get a federal ecu or ignore the light. or you can go hardcore and add a resistor (forgot what type) to the wiring harness to rid the light.

no problem, I've posted before about fixing the code 35 and nobody replied. I finally just got frustrated and decided to go ahead and not worry about the code and just try to see if a normal KA computer would work....anybody know??? Please....

We tried to add a resistor to some wiring, but I never got a clear answer on where to add the resistor for the code 35 so we just guessed.

well if 35 is the exh temp, then its related to your egr. basicly its thinking your egr isnt opening when it should, or is when its not. are you NA or turbo?

NA, and we removed the EGR system as it is only a track car

wait, your texas 240sx vehicle has egr?

1. EGR control valve, this controls the quantity of exhaust gas that is let into the intake manifold. It is located on the back of the intake and has a metal tube that goes to the exhaust manifold. This can be removed and no codes should be thrown and no check engine light. If not a 100K ohm, 1/4 watt resistor in place of the EGR temp sensor in its place to fix it.

hope that helps

your fix is right, but if its cali ecu and you disable the EGR, it will throw a code when it tries to engauge it be cause it does not see the heat from the exhaust.

either way, i dont think it changes fuel or timing maps if you have the cel

Hmm, I'm willing to be proved wrong with the richer map, but I did hear it from multiple people and it really seems like I have less power at WOT when the CEL is on. But again that might be mental. I'll do some more searching on my local forum and see what those guys say.

You need to put a resistor in place of this guy.
