View Full Version : Do you enjoy your chosen Career or Career Field?

Seems pretty self explanatory I think, but I'll try to elaborate.
Alot of people end up working in field they dislike or they grow to dislike. I am curious as to how common that really is. Reason being, I often think I missed my calling (so to speak) and would enjoy a different career. But, that said, I know the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
I'm a lead before and afterschool program counselor and D.O.E. assitant at a very succesful daycare in my area and when i started working i kinda hated it because it took so much of my time and involved alot of emotions but right now i'm in a place in my life where i'm very grateful for my job and the opportunitys that are becoming available to me. I mean i get paid to seriously have fun and make sure everyone else around me is having a good time. I really love my job although it gets tough because i'm working with familys and their problems everyday but it personally made me stronger and i know i could handle alot things most nineteen year olds will never imagine handling.

I don't necessarily hate my career (electrical designer) I just can't stand the engineering firm I work for now..they've made my life hell....
oh and the comment on Taco Bell...well I work there 20 or so hours a week too so I had to pick that, and there are people there who that is their whole life...as well as Pizza Hut when I worked there part time a few months back.

Its not meant to be derrogatory, sorry you may have taken it that way.
I suppose I could have put "I dont consider what I currently do my Career."

Meh, i love my job, and would stay in it if it wasnt for the bullchit that comes along with it. And the fact that i can only do so much to put up with said bullchit..

Totally agree with cgtdream. I probably wouldn't be living in japan if it wasn't for my job. And I like what I do, I just can't stand the organization. Still deciding if I am going to stay with my current employer or leave at the end of my obligation. It'd be a cake walk to an early retirement, but I dont know if I can put up w/ the bullcrap for 20 years. Time will tell I guess.

i'm still in college, so i had to go with number three. i manage a carwash.
Been here at MVP for a year this month and I must say it's the best job I've had yet. Get to travel all over on company money, great pay, actually having fun at work. Sometimes it gets stressful but I don't plan on leaving here anytime soon.

As some of you may know I Owned and Operated an Import Perfomance Shop.
Before that I did random Jobs and never stayed at one place for more than a year. Serving Tables is the last job I hope to never do again!! However, I did meet the guys that taught me Composite Fabrication. I even worked for them for FREE for over a year, just to learn everything.... they opted to start paying me very well, and when the time came that I wanted to venture into my own biz... they helped.
I have Closed the shop but I still play.
After doing Composites for about 5 years and working on several Millitary Contracts... its all starting to pay off!!
Currently, I am building the Worlds Fastest (prop drive) Boat!!!!
Miss Geico has nothing on this sucker!!!!
With all this Background in Cars, Composites, Boats, Racing, and yes... Customer Service... What is my Goal in Life?????
"to build one of the worlds fastest vehicles... then take it further..."

oh no I didn't take it as derogatory, I actually thought it was funny cause I do work there..lol..its sad that to some people it is their whole life....
I work there on the side cause my main employer is a heartless asshole who doesn't care that one of his employees is struggling cause i've got a house to pay for, a kid to feed, and a wife to keep happy. He and his dumbass wife would rather donate money to the community and to their church so they look good, if only the people at their church knew they kicked a family out of a house to put it up for sale and its still for sale(a year later)

Im a medical assistant at Kaiser Permanente been doing that for about 8 yrs. I dont like it for a career but i do enjoy my job. It is a very stressful job... I deal with a lot of sick people and i have a lot responsibilities. The good thing about it is that ive learn so much about the human anatomy and all the illnesses out there and what not. But the best thing about my job is that im the only male in my department and i work with a lot of good looking young nurses and i mean these girls are very good looking.

I LOVE my job! There are certain aspects I do not like, as with any job, but I think my job is interesting and I do make a difference in the legal system.

I respectfully disagree. I really really enjoy doing my job, I'm good at it (according to my annual review) and I get paid really really well for doing it.
Of course there are certain aspects of the job I don't like, but I love the major parts of my job.

I love my job as a mechanical engineer designing support equipment for the aerospace industry. It's cool to watch a rocket or the shuttle go up and know that I have a hand in it. The hours can be hell, but it's all worth it in the end.

I was the man...I am currently the worker....now looking forward to being my own boss eventually.
Realized that being the man for someone else wasn't worth it. If you are going to sacrifice and work yourself to death it might as well be your own damn self.

Burnt out. I'm a graphic design and have been doing it for about 7 years. I should have picked a different path. I'm very good at what I do, but the pay is not worth the stress and constant bullshit. I know so many people who don't know shit about anything, yet still make more money then me because they got a generic IT degree. Worst part is that I have a BA but it's basically worthless in any professional field....yey!

I chose yes because I don't hate my field and I make good money but I would rather be in automotive than telecom.

Its a toss up
I love being a fabricator/welder but I hate the jobs that it leads to. Yea, if i had a job like Luke, building cars i would love that. I always end up doing a lot of structural stuff, like cell tower frames, stair stringers, and hand rails.
Its ok but after building almost every cell tower frame in boston, yea it gets old.
Wish i would have kept my awning job! Built frames for awnings. Sickest hours ever 5am-1:30pm.

FedEx Ground/Home Delivery Driver. Hate it to the core. Get to work at 6am, some times I get home at 2, some times 9. Lots of stress, lots of bull shit, lots of stupid people who think they are in the greatest career field of all time (because for them, they are). Low pay, long hours and lots of expectations...sounds like work :spank:
I do video work on the side, mainly automotive, some other stuff.
Sad Panda Productions on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/sadpanda) <--- shameless plug
I'll get paid one of these days.
Hopefully going to school to get my BSN (science and nursing). Good money there.

I Selected YES! Cause I really do enjoy my career, and I really did'nt get to choose this career for my self, it sort'of chose me, thats the way it goes in the field I work in.
When I started working in this field, I hated it, it was not for me and I planned on leaving that place as soon as I could, so I thought.. but the money played a different tune and I danced to the paychecks I was not used to getting, I was like 19 at the time and ohh boy those checks were amaizing at that time, and they still are 10 years later, and plenty of promotions later.
There is only one part of it thats sucks, but it depends on individual perspective, and thats Night hours, never get to see the sun for more than 3 hours a day, and I always miss the car meets and stuff.. For me, I am NOT a morning person, Never have, and probably never will be, so it works out perfectly for me, except of course when everybody is up and about, I'm out for the count, and when everybody is going, I'm already coming.. Trucking/Dock/sales etc etc.. real night life.. Once youre in, there is no coming out.. Lol.

I LOVE MY JOB. I'm a local truck driver I do whatever I want I have no boss next to me breathing on looking at my every move as long as I get to my appointments on time everything is good. But I do have to say this you absolutely have to love driving this is not for the weak. truck driving and traffic is a whole different animal compared to driving your car in traffic. you pretty much have to go through 10 or more gears before you get to 55mph

That is pretty much my mentality.
I enjoy getting a salary, along with my benefits, so yes, i like it.

If I could do it over again, I would have gone into a field I *LOVED*. Pay & security would NOT have factored into my choice. NO job is totally secure, and no paycheck amount is ever guaranteed. Gotta love what you do... then nothing else matters. For now I am in a living HELL.

I enjoy my job, but like any other career it has its ups and downs. But, I can say that if I hadn't joined [the military] I probably would've never been fortunate enough to travel and see as much of the world as I have and meet the people I've met.
