View Full Version : Tire tread - inside shoulder

How is the car's handling affected when there's no tread on the inside shoulders of the front tires? And what about the rear tires?
I'm asking this because my rear tires' outside shoulders have no tread now, and HippoSleek recommended flipping the tires around. I'm wondering if I should flip them around and keep them on the back, or put them on the front, but I'd like to know how this is gonna affect the handling first.
Thanks.

I think you should get your alignment checked.

The alignment's fine. The tires got worn out from practicing drifting.

well....A slightly worn tire will have les grip and therefor make drifting easier right!!! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

Flipping shouldn't make any measureable change in handling, particularly at the limits. In the wet, the car might feel a bit less settled (common whenever you have a bald patch anywhere). But in hard driving, you will be using the opposite shoulder of the tire anyway (i.e., the reason one side got worn out in the first place).
An aside is that flipping is mostly done on race cars w/ race tires and race maintenance. Reason being that inside tread wear in hard to detect unless you are watching it. In other words, check out that tread regularly b/c otherwise you may miss when the tires are corded.

Okay, I went to get my tires flipped today but changed my mind. I got a good look at the tires when the car was lifted and they look like this:

okay balding good bald
It looks like there's probably already a bit of negative camber, cuz the inside tread's wearing out more than the outside, except for the outside shoulder which got totally rounded from drifting I guess. I guess I should just put more air in the tires.
