View Full Version : Need help!! KA PROBLEM!
ok it is a 89 s13. so i just finished my E to DE swap last week. everything was in place and ready to go (was hoping)
so i start it and it idles like a bitch.. maybe idles for like less then a min then just dies.. if i try 2 give it gas at about 1500 rpm or even less it'll also just die.
so i got another MAS and ECU. today tried changin both but still same problem.
my friend removed all emmision for me, supposely did it correct.
all vacume hoses are fine.
the car has been sittin for about over a year from the previous owner.. i havnt changed the fuel in the tank so that is one question i have..
how can i remove fuel from the tank without going thru the trouble of dropping the tank..
any suggestion from you guys??
any ideas of why my car is trippin like that?? couple ppl said the old fuel has nothing to do with it but i think it does so thats why i want to put new fuel and some injector cleaner in there..
but other than that does anyone has any ideas? suggestion? similar experiences?
also can back pressure do this?? i have just the exhaust manifold on with no down pipe no nothing.
well hope you guys can help me so i can finish my project once and for all.well atlease the engine part. interior still gutted like a mufuker.lol
P.S. car has a walbro 255 pump.. timing was fine when the dude i got it from had it, car was running fine. well seemed like it lol..
engine is from a s14 OBD1 my car is an 89.. did switch the distributor. and i believe i did that correct...
THANK YOU! in advance

I would have dropped the fuel tank and had it pressure washed. Bad fuel can be pretty nasty.

Siphon. Be a man, grab a soda to chase the taste of gas, drop a tube in the tank and suck till you start draining! It might also be the distributor. Mine was removed before I got it, and it caused all sorts of timing problems for me. Time the car, change the gas and get back to us!

or if your not down for that take the cover off the fuel pump in the back. Hook a hose up to the line that is not the return line then put the other end of the hose into a gas tank like a 5 gallon or what ever you have. after that
all you have to do is turn the key on and off multiple times untill all the fuel is out very simple. alot comes out to because it takes quite a bit to pressurize the fuel rail.

Take the main hose off that feeds the injectors, turn your key and the on position and the fuel will start pouring, get a cup or something and a friend to turn it off when you need to dump the cup.

redo timing, sounds like a timing issue... and with regards to the fuel you heard all of your choices^ good luck.

thats also a decent way to do things good thinking +1
hey guys.
thanks for all responses..
well today my friend came and tried to help me. he knows more than i do.
we tried messing with the timing on the distributor advancing it and retardin it but still same problem will idle for 30 secs and just die. if i give it gas itll act up and die as well...
we tried 3 different MAF and still same issue.. 2 ECU still same issue and ECU throwing out CODE 55 (NONE)..
i didnt drop the tank or take the fuel out, just added about a gallon of new fuel and some fuel cleaner or w.e but still same issue..
my friend gave me some dudes number from down here..
he said he will check timing with a light and check volts on the harnesses..
so if its not timing or MAF problem it is deff a FUEL problem so well see..
but if you guys think of anything alse just let me know ill give it a try im open minded to anything.
thanks you all!!

timing.... check the injectors...

I would check the fuel pressure and pump. The sock on that pump might be corroded away from the old fuel.
KA's will run on 0 degrees of timing it will just run like shit, but it shouldn't turn off. If you also ran that old fuel through the injectors you will want to get injector cleaner, or use a gallon of toulene, (it's also an Octane booster).
Check for any related grounding issues, check your spark plugs, and as well check how many cranking amps your battery is performing at. Old batteries go bad too.
Last but not least your IACV could be sticky since it probably hasn't been used in a long time. Get some TB cleaner and fill it into the IACV line.
If you check all those related issues, then it's definitely a vacuum problem.

It sounds like your IACV hose is not connect to your intake pipe, is that left open and be honest please. It don't sound like fuel, that happened to me when I didn't put the Iacv hose.
Take some pictures and let me see your bay this way maybe we can pin point it out.

To drain the tank, just run a piece of hose from the FPR to a gas can. Easiest way to do it. If you do decide to drop your tank and clean it out. Please, please use something to get rid of the moisture in your tank. I suggest spraying some WD-40. It absorbs any moisture and acts a rust inhibitor.
I learned all this the hard way. I dropped my tank because it was completely rusted out in the inside. I used muriatic acid to eat all the rust, baking soda to neutralize it, and then hosed it all out. I forgot to use something to absorb the moisture and it rusted over night. Ended up getting another tank.
hey guys
im waiting for one of my friends friends to come and do my timing perfect so if its not a timing issue i can eleminate that problem..
heres a pic of the engine bay. idk why you want to see it pero ok.
ima try 2 drain the tank today.. hope i can do it correct.
thanks

not that it matters, but your o2 sensor isnt hooked up <3

Ok well that bay looks nice, ditto on the o2. But I do see the IACV connected so it can't be that. But I do how ever see that you don't have your stock headers on? no back pressure. hence I believe it would choke.

what if that was the problem all along...that he didnt put the headers back on.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! damn that would be funny...

lmao! na when i took this pic the headers werent on, there on when i work on the car..
and yes i do connect the o2 when i start the car but thats not the problem..
one of my friends came thru yesterday, he put the car in perfect timing.
i took out all the old fuel, put new fuel in there and the same problem..
so we tried starting the car while we blocked the FUEL RETURN LINE..
the car was idleing fine and reving, when he let go the line, it started to idle nasty and shut off again..
so what were suspecting is that the fuel pump is pumping right when the key is turned over but after that it does pump any more so thats why the car dies after like 20 secs of idleing..
so were going to connect a FPR and check pressure. and also power the FUEL PUMP from a different battery to see if thats the problem..
anyone with any input?? any idea guys???
thanks you

I know you said that wasn't an up to date pic, but it looks to me that one of the vacuum lines right next to the upper rad hose on the intake isn't connected, the blue is visible.

i do connect it when i work on it as well, but that doesnt even have nothing to do.
from thousands of members here no one can give me a better advise or idea???
i got a multi meter today, ima check the voltage coming from the pump at all times to see whats up with that.
idk, feel free to say something guys.
thanks

Check your fuel pressure regulator...if car is running fine while you have the return blocked off your regulator may be torn and bleeding off fuel pressure. That and i can't see your pic im at work but make sure your fuel lines aren't connected backwards.
