View Full Version : SOHC sounds like a VR6 or STi.

Okay, way back when when I got my hatch I had to change the valve cover gasket, so I did that; no problem. When I started it it didn't want to idle. Long story short it fixed itself but sounded like an STi or VR6 because it was a low rumble but with the butterfly fluttery sound. That was 3 months ago; it's doing it again. I also hear a knock of some kind in and around the fan area. I opened up my hood to see what was up and all I could hear is that knocking. It kind of sounds like the fan or something retarded. It also only does it from time to time... I don't know whats up so if anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

When my engine started making that sound, turned out to be a blown valve seal.

when my car used to sound like a subaru, it was because one of my injectors was bad. i replaced it and it subie sound went away. :)

also, the subie sound happens if a spark plug is faulty and or if the oring injectors are bad.

Another one to vouch for injectors, happened to me. Wiggle your injectors and tap them a bit see if the subie sound goes away.

Quick way to test that it might me an injector: Start your car and let it idle. You'll want to unplug the injectors one at a time to test if they're firing. Unplug one, plug it back in. Unplug another, plug it back in, etc, etc.

When you unplug one and the idle gets worse/rougher, then you know that injector is working. If you unplug an injector and the idle doesn't change, then thats the injector that's causing your idle problem because its not spraying. Before taking it off though, you can try cleaning the plug with electrical parts cleaner to see if its just a bad connection.

if an injectors bad, its only gonna be running on 3 cylinders, there would be a definite loss of power there.

ye or neh?

I guess, being that its really low power to begin with- but yea, like thejapino said, just run it and pull one at a time and find your trouble

The funny thing is is that it doesn't drive like it's running on 3 cylinders and only does it sometimes... I'm buying new plugs and wires next week along with an oil change to see if it helps. Thanks guys.
