So I'm doing a oil change for the first time in my life today on my 240. :eek3d: I think i got everything down except the oil filter removal tool and I'm nervous. I guess there is a special tool that you use to grab on to the filter to remove it and i do not have that. Do i really need it or can i just do it by hand? Here is a picture of what i think I'm talking about.

you dont need the tool. its just a clamp that grabs the filter. just man up and do it by hand or figure something out. its not rocket science

It makes it easier especially if you don't have skinny forearms.

Ummm, try it by hand first.

If that doesn't work, thrust a screwdriver through the side of the filter, and use that to turn it. Or spend the money for another tool. There are a couple to chose from, different styles and such.

If that still doesn't work, dynamite does wonders on a stuck filter.

you can get an oil filter wrench from an autoparts store. if the filter isn't torqued on their real tight then you might be able to do it by hand.

There are different sizes of oil filter wrenches, you need a smaller one. Or you can buy the socket style adapters, basically a socket for an oil filter.

i usually just end up spraying it down with brake kleen, then if you have a rubber glove on you get a super good grip.

though at work i usually use the claw type filter wrench.

You can make it.

I prefer to use a thermic lance personally though.

or sit thermite on it and light it.

I use an oil filter wrench, it was like 6 bucks at advance auto, it is one of those ones that tightens when turned in the direction to loosen the filter... In such, there is NO reinstalling that filter for any reason, but I like it because I can do it without having to squeeze my big fat arms in there.

strap wrenches suck... I use this tho if i cant get em by hand.

I have 3 of them myself - a loaner, my box, and one for home. :)

^^^ Mine is very similar to that one.
I would go out and take a picture, but I just fucked up my USB cable, so I won't

ive never used a wrench, always used my hands. one time it was stuck on there good and i had to shove a screw driver through it and turn it that way(like that guy said). kind of messy though

go to auto part store, find a filter for your car on the shelf, then go to the tool section (ask people if you can't find it) and find the right size cap for your oil filter. You will need your 3/8 socket ratchet. Those things are like 5 bucks, so I don't think there is any reason not to buy it.

Personally, I use the oil filter vise... it's usually overkill but that's how I roll. :cj:

Something like this but it was $5 I think... http://www.mytoolstore.com/chnnlock/oilfilt.html

i just use sand paper... but there are times you need a tool. because tools like us use them to put them on and makes it hella hard to take off the next time haha.

ka24de you can get from top
sohc its a lil harder because the mani.

I agree, I use sand paper if it slips or if its a little to tight.

1. the cups dont work on all brands of filters - so screw those.

2. you'll never be able to use oil filter pliers on a SR with a stock intake mani.

3. i always wear rubber gloves - so its rare i cant grip the filter and just twist it by hand - but I have a pack of those jar opener things like old people need to get pickle jars open (magic grip etc)

4. use K and N filters - they have a socket head on the end - and they're awesome anyways (12-15 bucks tho usually)

i just use my hands

in the occasion that my hands dont work, long screw driver + hammer will ALWAYS work.. it just leaves a big mess :(

oil filter wrenches are good. i have the snapon one where you have to attach a ratchet to it.

if anything else fails, it's going to be messy though, i stab it with screwdriver and twist it loose that way. i learned it from my friend who works at nissan where time is a necessity. haha.

Well I finished it, and all went really smooth for my first time thank god. I got it off with my hands. The hardest part was getting my arms down there but i did it. Thanks for all the suggestions guys, it gave me some motivation.

whenever i get a new car i usually have to use a tool to get the filter off the first time.

after that, hand tight on = hand tight off

everyone has their own way of doing things... i've never tried K&N, but i stick to my trusty Fram filters... they have the grips on the end.

Now here's the good part... the screwdriver idea is one of the best, but make sure to have your pan in place prior to shanking that s.o.b. lol
The other way i've done it is to use a big open-ended wrench like an 1-1/2" push down a little onto the filter and begin turning. Keep up the good work everyone. Props to all!
