NRG Quick Release Qusetion

Looking into buying a Second Gen NRG quick release hub. Will I need a hub adapter on top of buying this? Or will an aftermarket wheel bolt up to this? Sounds dumb, but I could use a donkey kick in the right direction. Thanks.

Generally you need something to mount the steering wheel to the steering column.

The stock wheel has a built-in hub so the unit bolts onto the steering column with no problem.

When you run an aftermarket wheel, you generally need a hub kit. The wheel which usually comes in a couple of universal bolt patterns then bolts into the hub.

Some quick release kits mounts between the hub and the wheel, like the Tekniq that I have.

Some others come with a built in hub so a separate hub is not required.


I believe the 2nd gen NRG unit is universal. So you would have to get a hub kit, and bolt the NRG unit onto the hub mounted on the steering column, assemble the quick release portion to the wheel, and then attach/detach.

Maybe a vendor can chime in, but when I tried to buy the NRG shorty hub I was told that this would only work with the NRG quick release due to the weird bolt pattern where the base mounts to the hub. So I'm not sure a standard hub will fit the base of the QR.

Your best bet is to get everything from one vendor after you tell them what car you have. That way, any problem comes up you can pin it on the vendor and make them do an exchange for you.

I'm a little confused by your terminology.

It goes like this:

steering column - hub - optional quick release - wheel



The hub is traditionally used to refer to the part that bolts onto the steering column and has threads that go in a circle. The common bolt patterns are either Momo or Nardi, each with 6 bolts arranged at different spacings.

If you look on the NRG site, the surface of the quick release where the wheel mounts has 12 bolts. This quick release can be used with wheels having both Momo and Nardi bolt patterns.

Look at the pix. The hub adaptor mounts on the spline of the steering column. The quick release base plate mounts onto the hub and interacts with the lock ring. The lock ring should mount directly to the steerin wheel.

If you don't have a quick release then the steering wheel mounts straight to the hub adaptor if the bolt patterns line up.



So if you're asking if the wheel mounts onto the quick release, then yes, it should.

If you have problems getting wheels to fit, I have adaptor plates that convert Momo to Nardi and Nardi to Momo in my basement if you want to buy them. Vendors should have them as well.

If you have a wheel with a Momo or Nardi bolt pattern, then yes, these wheels will bolt directly onto the NRG quick release.

Be careful if you buy other 3 or 5 bolt wheels. These will not fit without some sort of adaptor. You typically find these wheels on older American cars, drag cars, circle cars, etc.

get the nrg short hub with that version 2 quick release it puts the wheel at about the same distance as the stock steering wheel with stock seats.

I believe so, but please check with the vendor to be sure.

I personally like this one much more because it also has Nardi bolt pattern for flexibility if you want to swap wheels later.

Or just get yourself a good tap and die set and retap the Nardi bolt pattern later if you want. No big deal.

Although Sparco does make a quick release that you weld directly onto the steering column, thus eliminating the hub completely.
