anybody have one? i've never really liked scooters but this thing barely looks like a fruity vespa or anything. i'm selling my acura as soon as i get the 240 going again (read: weeks), and i think it might be nice to pick one of these up as well to save on gas (something like 90mpg!). 49cc, so i wouldn't have to get insurance for it or even register it. apparently they can get up and over ~45mph without much struggle, so it'd be fine for all non-highway roads around here... and a brand new one is just over $2k. it'd be useless from like november-march, save the occasional nice day, of course..
might be nice to dick with a bit, too, frame extension and who knows what.

but yeah, anybody have one?

I thought this thread was going to be about some Honda bitching and fighting.

That thing looks fucking dope though.

I'd rock that scooter for sure.

90 to a gallon!

I WANT!

My work's like 20 miles away too.

It'd take not even two gallons/week on that scooter compared to over 6 gallons of 93/week in my S14.

OH YEAHHHHHHHHH!

BustedS13

actually it might be more like 100mpg (on road), according to most of what i'm reading. that'd be nice.

It'd pay itself off.

I have one of those.

I am getting a 100 mpg on the ~20mile commute to work with hills both ways.

Just ordered some upgrades to bump up the rev lim to 10500 instead of 8500.

I top out at about 45 on flats with no head wind.

Holds about 35 going up some pretty steep hills.

Nothing against a ruckus but if you can, just get you a S, 2 strokes are way better then a 4 stroke in terms of mopeds or scooters performance. And there is a ton of more after market support.
This was my set up that I built myself back in 04,

Nothing special, just something that was simple and reiable. It came out to a little under 76cc's but I could get it into low 70's mph w/ my weight @ 195lbs. It's something really fun to ride and easy to work on once you understand the tuning aspect involved.

not in my state. 50cc or less = no license at all. counts as a motorized bicycle.

Tenchuu
05-17-2008, 11:51 PM
I say just break down and get a bike. i almost run over scooters all the time because they can't keep up with the speed limits (45) and the hill around me they constantly drive 10-15 below the limit and swerve in and out of lanes as they build up and loose speed. I just got a ninja 250 myself, and i don't have to look limp wristed while cruising around on it. check on your state requirements too.

pick up your local motorcycle state handbook and read the part on mopeds, don't believe internet rumors.

Oregon: a moped must be under 50cc and cannot propel the rider more than 30MPH on level ground. you also have to get a motorcycle liscence to ride one here and are held accountable as much as a motorcycle is for breaking any rules of the road.

So, I'm REALLY thinking about getting one.

The speed limit to my work is 45 all the way on a one lane road with a healthy shoulder. All driving would be done during light times. Do you guys think the Ruckus would be safe?

The Ruckus tops out at 45 from what I've read.

Not to step on your toes DreamN, but this post isn't whether you think my bike is gay, it really has nothing to do with what you been posting on this thread. BustedS13 asked if anyone has ever owned a ruckus. I personally have never owned a ruckus but have been modifying mopeds "2 stroke honda's" for the last 5-1/2 years, and was simply offering him advice on a possible alternative route to take. So if you can't contribute any useful information to this subject, please keep your opinion of my bike to a minimum. Thank you

Yeah, that's one of the Kiri2Racing Bikes.

Anyway, having a Ruckus makes a lot more sense in some states than others. In California it kind of sucks, as you need a motorcycle license, plates, and all that shit.

In Maryland (or VA or DC), it's basically a bicycle, lol. As long as you have a driver's license and a helmet, you're good. I have no plates, no registration, no special license, nothing. Thus, it makes it *much* more painless than buying a *real* motorcycle. If I lived in CA, I'd probably have just built a CB750 cafe (which is my next project when fixed-gear and Ruckus is done).

Anyway, here's a pic of mine from November, back when I got it. I've been assembling parts (low seat frame, extension, stage6 kickstart, daytona kickstand, tokyoparts LED), but I'm going to throw it all on at once.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i76/Keifeinzel/GassedandReady.jpg

They're lots of fun, I ride mine like 30 miles each way into DC for work on nice days. If traffic gets bad I just jump a curb and ride on the sidewalk or between buildings or whatever, it's great.

sweet! I might have to buy one of these and chop it up. The hassle of having a MC license I have already accomplished years ago. My commute is close to 20 miles, highway, but I can make it on side streets.. 90-100 mpg.. thats all you had to say!

Will this thing pull 250lbs of beer gut around?

Well, if Big Black (Christopher Boykin) can ride it, you surely can. He's 375lbs.

There are plenty of users on TotalRuckus who are 250lbs or heavier. It'll effect your top speed and acceleration a little bit, but it'll be fine.

You might want to upgrade to a stiffer rear shock though. Hell, I'm only 175lbs, and I'm going to do that.

yeah, the new ones are supposed to be able to do 43mph, and some light modding should coax them over 50.

i'm talking to some locals who know their way around moped laws, and everyone's understanding is that if it's under 50cc's and proper ride height with proper lighting, it's legal without plates on public roads. i'm gonna go over to the honda dealership down the street at lunch to see what's up

I've yet to encounter anyone on the roads who has driven like an asshole just because I'm on a scoot. Other people on TR *have* experienced this left and right, so I think it's a crapshoot. It also probably depends heavily on where you're riding it.

In downtown DC there are dozens and dozens of scoots, motorcycles, and bicycles everywhere, so people are pretty cool about it.

The trick is to stay on roads with about a 40mph speed limit....max. Higher than that and you're asking for trouble because you'll be impeding the progress of other drivers.

Trust me, I took my Ruck on the freeway once just for shits and giggles and I got neither, it was scary as shit. People whizzing by you going double your speed, etc. Not cool.

One guy on TR carries a bag of pennies on his bike. Whenever anyone cuts him off, tries to nudge him over, or whatever, he throws a handful of pennies at their car. As I mentioned earlier, I've never encountered any driver behavior that would make me feel like I need to do this.

People are always just asking me where I got it, what it is, how much it costs, what the mpg is, etc.. I get lots of people on HD's and sportbikes giving me thumbs up, etc.

Check this out. This is a Korean kid on TR that rode his Ruck from NC to CA and is now coming back. He's put over 10,000 miles on the bike:

My uncle who is a long time Honda and Yamaha motorcycle fan started looking into these for me know. He said the engine that's in there is one of Honda's first designs. He said it's a tank.

I can't believe I'm cool with buying a scooter. I'm thinking of doing a mad max design on the thing somehow.

Seems like there's a lotta parts out there. First thing would be to make the luggage area cover thing.

Can two people ride on this thing?

people mount some little schwinn bike seat onto the back bar of the seat frame to fit a second person on there. what's the point of riding on two wheels if you can't haul bitches son! CHURCH

no but seriously they take the bike mount off the bottom of this seat and add some mounts like what the stock ruckus seat has so it can fold up when not in use

People do it, but it's seriously iffy. For really short distances it's probably okay though.

The Camo 07 had a special designation of "NPS50S", rather than the normal "NPS50" for all other rucks.

Custom paint job ftw, I'm working on piecing together extra factory pieces (bat box, lower frame, already have aftermarket seat rail) to have a 2nd set of gear in another color I can swap on. I didn't want to paint over my shiny new 08 silver stuff.

Don't look past the dangers of these. Although I wouldn't mind having one to save a bank load of money scooters are not a safe mode of transportation.

My father was killed on a scooter last August.

Things to keep in mind,
1.These things are quiet- you don't have Harley type exhaust coming off these things to let others know where you are.
2.These things are small- It is very easy for other drivers to not see you
3.These things don't handle very well- Hard to get yourself out of a tight spot
4.These things are not quick- also hard for you to get yourself out of a tight spot
5. Not very protective- just like motorcycles if you get hit your in for some pain.

I'm not saying don't get one i'm just saying if you do you need to be very careful.

To make yourself more visible while driving would it be a good idea to put some LED's on the bike somewhere? Or is that illegal like Neons?

just1pepsi
05-20-2008, 08:37 AM
Probably depends on state law, there is a device for normal bikes which makes your headlight flash so that oncoming traffic can see you during the day. They are illegal here in OK, but legal in AZ. blue LEDs of any kind ont he outside of a vehicle are illegal here as well. Reason being (It can be confused for an emergency vehicle.. that would be too bad now wouldnt it)

I know in VA, basically the same laws that govern a bicycle.

I plan on getting a good LED setup going on my moped, and I have a 55w bulb in my front headlight, for extra brightness.

and it'll have basically as close to a straight pipe as I can run with it still running right. 4 stroke ftw.

They had camo almost every year.....keep in mind the 06 and up ones are a little faster. They have higher redline and such.

It is possible for 2 people to ride....but I wouldn't advise it unless its right up the street and its a slow street (like 30mph)

Yeah, I'm plotting on moving closer to work (trimming 30mi round trip off my commute) and getting a ruckus for the commute when the weather allows. I'd say anything under 2k used (since thats what they go for new) -- work back from there based on condition.

I'm going to commute on mine the rest of this week (80 and sunny in DC).

It's like 20 miles each way, so a total of about 120 miles the rest of the week. Tank is empty now, so if I refill tomorrow morning, I can get 140 miles out of it before I fill again. It'll cost about $5 to fill it, lol.

I love my Ruckus.

It's so much fun to commute on. Whenever there's traffic, I just go up on the sidewalk or a bike path and blow right by all the cars. It's even better than splitting lanes. It takes a car about 1-1.5 hrs to do my commute in rush hour, Ruckus will do it in 40 mins.

"Just what every Ruck needs, storage! If you're sick of wearing a backpack to haul shit around, then you need this functional piece of carbon sweetness. If you have a stock bike, then you can just slide this in and go, but we really designed this to maximize storage on bikes with the NCY engine extension and NCY lowered seat frame. If you've done these mods, then you still need to route all your wiring under the frame crossmember and grind off the coolant catchtank post for this to fit. In return the bin let's you store a full 12 pack of your favorite beverages. Just don't drink and drive dumbass!"
