View Full Version : Work XD9 wheel misprint? WTF?
friend of mine just picked up some work xd9's for his evo, 18x9 +30. 5x114.3
SO WHY THE HELL IS 4x114.3 CAST INTO THE WHEEL
it's not even a multi lug patterned wheel

Dude...its a misprint limited edition. Haha. Maybe the price will be worth more just like comic books. Kinda rare that that happens since they have QA for automotive parts...especially parts from Japan.

Cast into the barrel?
Most of the time it's a sticker on the barrel.
The disk normally is cast.

i've seen this a couple of times.
2 sets of SSR Comps from Tire Rack that i've seen were printed with 4x100 and 4x114 and the wheel was a 5x114.

I've seen 50+ rims that have all sorts printed into the cast. It probably says 5x114.3 somewhere else also?
These wheels aren't one off's. Far from it.
OOPS
not barrel
there's a sticker on there
it's on the lip

i've seen quite a few wheels that are this way... my current set of Avs' are misprinted (where wheel meets hub) and my vs-kf's are misprinted (face/rear of spoke)... it happens.. i was so pissed when my kf's arrived and they were marked 5x100.... i was about to tear some shit up, then we were like... lets just try em on.... and they worked.... so w/e as long as they didnt send the wrong wheel...

i had a pair of volk racing C-ultra wheels that said it was 5x114.3 in the back, went to go put them on my s14 and they ended up being 5x100, sometimes its a fuck up through the company. it sucks!

It's not a misprint
It's just part of the casting, nothing wrong with the wheel
It refers to the mold that was used to cast the wheel
Once they build the mold, they just use one mold
So the wheel that was built in the OP's case was a 4x114.3 test wheel
The bolt pattern / PCD is later drilled into the wheel
Bolt pattern / PCD should be referenced off the decal inside, or sometimes the offset / width are stamped into the back of the backpad
Don't worry

Indeed. Wheel misprinting is a very serious offense. :faint:

yeah, i can't imagine having to keep a new MOLD around for each bolt pattern (maybe some?)
what Logan said about holes being drilled afterwards makes more sense

lol, i wonder if there was anyone out there that saw the stamped "4x114.3" on the wheel, and saw the 5 lug holes, but still tried to mount it to a 4 lug vehicle.
but i love finding mistakes like that, it makes me laugh, it's no surprise though, i work for motorola and we have white papers and case studies that face millions of customers with ridiculous typos and misprints.

I believe that info may be in the 1st run casting to make the wheel meet certification / testing by the government. if they can meet those regs @ that pattern, then the other lug patterns work just as well.
some wheels have load ratings for the different lug patterns on them, my STIs SSR Competitions had 5x00, 5x114 and another lug pattern on the center section, each with its own load capacity at that lug pattern.
I hope that makes sense.

LOL did people just miss what I posted?
Its not a mistake, not a misprint, none of that
People still speculating when I gave the answer already lol
Yup.
Logan answered my question. thank you sir
it kind of surprises me though, $1000+ wheels and it's an obvious flaw for those who are nit picky.

uhh no its tacky. you know how many people would bitch and complain about getting wheels with misprints? theirs plenty of anal people. although i wouldnt care but it would be awkward when someone looks at your wheel..then sees your 5 lug..."dude are your wheels fake?"

You know how many people would bitch and complain if the wheel company made a new mold for EACH bolt pattern and size? LOL
It's more cost efficient and is logical from a manufacturing standpoint
Try recouping that mold cost and factoring that into the price of the wheel
Haha
