View Full Version : Beat me with a stick, another fan/radiator question...

Alright, after being neglected for almost 2 years, i'm going to get my s13.5 back on the road. All the parts i need are: battery relocation kit, some sort of fan set-up, and a boost gauge. I'll need to bleed the brakes, and just make sure my s13 blacktop is in good mechanical order.

First off, this was a ka24e automatic car. My set-up is this: s13 blacktop; XS equal length manifold, j-pipe(tomei copy, which i think doesn't work properly, can anyone help out with this?), downpipe, and intercooler kit; stock ka automatic radiator, thermostat, and radiator cap; HKS actuator(12psi); stock turbo; i suppose the air filter and bov doesn't matter. From being dead cool and 70 degree weather, I drove the car 3-5 miles with no hood, bumper, or fenders and the temp gauge went aprox. 3/4 up. I kept monitoring it, and when it got half-way... it took seconds to shoot up to the 3/4 mark. I instantly shut off.

I know i need some sort of fan. This is where i'm confused. While working for a Nissan tuning shop here in VA, we sold electric fans that had an adjustable thermostat and probe. You just simply probbed the radiator and selected your desired fan turn on from the thermostat. I'm having trouble finding these on my own now. If i find them, can i run two with two thermoswitches? One would be set low, as the other higher. I don't want to get into the hard core wiring of the altima fans and relays.

The car will never see over 12psi, nor will it be tracked often. If it is going to be tracked, i will bring it via squat-down(rollback that has air bags, as the bed goes completely flat on the pavement.... perfect for lowered vehicles.)

I am going to flush my stock ka radiator. I am going to buy a new 1.3 radiator cap, as well as an OEM sr20 thermostat. I will be using water wetter and 50/50 antifreeze. If i can find the above mentioned fan, what size should i aim for? 12" or 14"? What should be the best cfm for an sr? The fan/fans will be pulling. Will this set-up be sufficient?

Thank you for reading my long ass post. I do apologize for bringing up another fan thread, but please do not advice an altima or taurus fan.

He is right. They are better than e-fans and not harder to wire up. The probes are lame and cheap. There is a solid chance they will die on you and your fans will never kick on...thats bad. I had a crappy efan and probe setup for a while and was in the process of setting up with a altima fans and a pivot fan controller for a nice little solution. (Then my car got totaled so I didnt).

Summary: do it right the first time: dont use probes

Get a Nismo Thermo, http://www.thenismoshop.com/ikorb.php?func=catalog&category_id=1159&product_id=266

Probably the best 50 bucks you will spend. Engine warms up quicker and when combined with Koyo Aluminum Rad. Temp never rises above 70*C

I run this set up with a single KIA fan and temp never rises above 67*C unless I turn the A/C on.
I run the fan off a correct relay set up so when the engine is on the fan is on

Old Mercedes dual 12' electric fans from junk yard, most powerfull 12's Iv'e ever used and they were 17 bucks for both.

don't see how you can vouch reliability for junk yard fans. I have used those electric fans on different builds. They worked great.

summit racing sells those relays w/ the temperature radiator probe. Some of the relays can support two fans so you would not need separate switches for low/high.
