I was reading this was for statistical purposes and they can't "bust" you at these things.

not sure... I can't really say anything because I haven't seen one personally (in my car, thank god)...

but... my friend had to go through one of these check points in his bone stock s13. the setup is basically like a alcohol checkpoint, cept this time they have the smog machine set-up also.

He told me they asked what year his car was... he told them "1994" and they let him go :hsdance:

This thread could prove to be very helpful. I have yet to see one of these, but I'm sure there will be more and more of them spreading around.

Some are just random check for license and registration some have the mobile smog. This one however had the mobile smog. Either way im just keeping those informed. Hyper as far as it being mandatory, if you were to bust a u-turn at one of these when you were very close to one, don't they usually have bike patrol across the street or nearby for those who try this attempt.

I been through one and if you play it cool they don't hassle you there just making sure people have all their stuff legit. (when its just the license and reg check) They do have tow trucks there always. about 5, 6 always having cars on them too.

My friend got hit by one of those scanners on the side that send you a letter in the mail stating that your car is an excessive polluter and they offer $500 worth in repairs or $1000 to take your car off the road for good meaning that they will buy the car from you for $1000.

I saw one in lake forest, off bake and muirlands. Like a check point with a mobile dyno smog check. CHP looked like he was randomly telling people to pull over. newer and older cars

Whenever I see one of those while in my '74 Duster, I floor it, and then quickly let off the gas. It blows a huge smokey fireball out my dual exhaust.
I love being smog exempt in California.

depends where you're at. OC is likely the worst (they're also notorious for sobriety stops), with LB and SD behind. Fortunately in the Los Angeles area, I have yet so see smog checks.

sobriety checks are rare, but we do have them here. 1 yr ago, there was one around Doheny @ Santa Monica (in Beverly Hills). It got backed up so far I was able to flip a U w/out incident. I didn't even drink, I just didn't want to deal with the traffic at 1am.

Wait... So are you saying they were offering him $500 to fix his car? If so, could you just pocket the money and fix it for cheap or just get a smog and pass ;)

they will pay up to $500 for repairs and if the diagnosis exceeds that amount then they will pay you $1000 for you to take your car off the road ie. buy it from you.

just an FYI...

my cousin got a ticket for a "modified exhaust....."

totally fuckin bullshit... because its a stock exhaust with a frekkin shinny tip (got it from Jackson for $20, lol)

when he asked the cop "wtf?"

cop said, it doesnt have to be sound, it "looks modified" so he's able to give him a ticket...

also... some CHP stations are able to sign off the ticket, other stations will refer you to a ref station. You have to set an appointment for a referree to look at your car, but they charge $60.

Sooo... potentially, if you get a "modified exhaust ticket" you'd be spending around $70-$80 ($60 for ref, $10-15 for court fees)... this is all because it looks modified, it has nothing to do with emissions or decible reading.

I on the otherhand did recieve a "modified exhaust" ticket awhile back, but decided to just pay it off to avoid any other bs from the ref... I paid the court about $123.

So, my understanding of "Smog Check II" is that if you fail at these mobile test centers you get a letter in the mail telling you that you failed the test and directing you to take the car to get retested. I assume at a ref station not at a garage test.

Bobafreak

any time the cops writes wrong information down you should be able to get the ticket signed off somehow.... had it happen to friends where they wrote wrong info down...

yes it is legal to have a modified exhaust has to meet the db level

I was approved for the $500 repair at at a state sponsored auto shop. I went to visit a few and they looked at my car and said I would need another $500 or more above what California would give me. And they wanted to go with all OEM parts. Plus the mechanics sounded like jerks--wanted to do things their way. I just went to my mechanic and had everything done the correct way.

I remember last year i was on my lunch break and got food near the bakers in corona (intersect of mckinley and magnolia). on the way back to work i took magnolia headn west and i spotted a mobile smog station the traffic was slow and a cop regulates it. i was in my 96 camry and he directed me to station and asked he if i would like to get my car tested so i had a choice to move on, but i had time to kill and they found why my engine check light was on and gave me a print out

long story short
so basically i had a choice to go through it and it is usually in the same area annually

Yea, pretty frustrating living here as any type of car enthusiast but I think I'm at the point where if I get busted randomly even if I'm obeying all traffic laws I think I'll just give it up and buy a 1st gen GS300; It's just ridiculous and all these asswipes that try to streetrace me every time I take my car out aren't making it any better.

coming right off WOOD st. and onto Van buren heading west there is a smog "survey" station you can see a huge caution sign before you continue on onto van buren passing wood. there are two ways around this if your heading back to riverside towards tyler mall

take wood heading south down to cajalco , make a right and get off el sobrante and take it to moking bird to get on van buren or continue on sobrante til you hit
la sierra

or take trautwein to alessandro
