proper wheel width

Now I know not all of you really like drifting too much...but what would a good wheel width for drifting. I want to get 17" wheels (I know the smaller diameter the better but i want my car to look good too) but i'm not sure what wheel width is the best. I assume that the skinnier the tire the better. (less contact patch less grip) but I just want to see what all you guys think.

I was thinking 7" wide

how much power do you make?

if you have a KA dont go larger then a 16, it is just REALLY easy to break loose AND maintain longer on 15s, tires are cheap too.

let us know your power #s and we'll go form there. also how SERIOUS are you about drifting?

also, let us know how much $$$ you have. You will be spending a LOT on tires if you get even 16" rims... drifting on 17s? ... you'd better be loaded!
edit: or better yet... SPONSORED!!  (by a tire company)

thanks for the help, but actually, this is a hypothetical question. I don't have a car to drift in...yet <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'> (I'm buying an s13 coupe when I graduate in may)

but anyway, more power will be fourth on my list.
1.drifting suspension setup
2. 2way lsd
3.seat
4.sr20det

money...enough to achieve these four goals immediately after I buy my s13.


adey-you're right, 17's will eat my wallet for lunch pretty fast. &nbsp;I better have a set of 15's or 16's just for drifting. and if I do that would I be able to keep 17's in the front and then just change out my rear wheels when I drift?

but 2 things

YOU DONT NEED AN SR TO DRIFT!!

also, there is no such thing as "drift suspension". a good set of shocks/springs is all you &nbsp;need, shit even stock suspension is good for learning, you'll learn more too.

a seat is useful definately. i would do that first actually.

you can do a lot w/o an LSD as well, a lot can be learned on a stock car, but the rest do make it MUCH easier (w/ the exception of the SR)

i'd stay with 15s if i were you. 15x7 or 15x6.5 are good choice.

and sorry i didn't clarify myself, I just want a quality suspension and a tight chasis.



one more question...I know drifters usually have 2 sets of wheels, their everyday wheels and their lightweight drifting wheels. &nbsp;But is it possible to have 17's as my everyday wheel and swap out my rear wheels for 15's when I want to drift? What I mean is keep 17's on the front but have 15's in the back.

yeah of course you can do that
get 17s for the daily stuff and 16sfor the track

you can go 15s but you need to be careful on tire sizes of cours if you run 17s on front
i'd say go 17s on front with 16s on back

and please dont gte 17x7, that's weak. at least 17x8. you can run a 17x9 on the fronts and clear everything (coilovers and z brakes) but watch out for offsets!!!

get at least a 17x8 if you go 17. in 15s, easiset to find is a 15x7 of course.
