I just had the scariest shit happen to me...!
I just came to work but, right before my office building, as i got off the highway there was a cop, so I slowed down from off ramp lol... then as I was turning turning few corners I notice a guy with a nice looking black golf following me... I'm like yo guy slow down, you want to race or something and there's a cop right there, what's wrong with you! lol... he slows down and is talking I'm like huh... I roll down my window, he rolls down his, he is telling me some stuff I can't hear... then we basically come to a stop on the road side by side I turn my hazzard lights and he tells me "There's a control arm hanging behind your car".... I'm like WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!????!!!!!!!!!!!! I freak out... My office building is like right there almost... i sloowly go there.. im like CANT be control arm.. cmon... but still freaked out... I park the car, i had JUST TWO tissues my wife left last night in the car (God's will I swear, fate, nothing happens by coincidence EVER)... I use them to not get dirty lol... go under the car... O...M...G..... passenger rear hicas tie rod hanging.... HOLY CRAP.. I mean HANGING detached!
I was so used to the vague rear end feel due to 1. no alignment in long time now (waiting for new parts anyways) and 2. rear subframe bushings still the same original ones (pineapples snapped out somehow so poo waiting to install spl's alum subframe bushings).... but holy crap.........................
I am going to my mechanic slooowly asap.. this is scary shit.... fuck you HICAS... (I have hicas stopper btw)... can't wait to put the non hicas subframe and proper toe arms in place...

I do something called a "pre-trip inspection" basically, look for anything out of the ordinary, front, back, under, side to side, lights , tires, etc.
Better to find a defect yourself than a cop or find yourself stranded on the shoulder cause something stupid happened like a wheel falling off.
its a good habit to pick-up.

that is a good habit but i know when i am on my way to work i am usually late anyway but i prob shoud start checking mine

Yeah I check the car too but I don't go under it every time I park/go... when I go to work especially is when I'm in rush...
And yeah the car has been very loose/skitty/squirly (love the descriptions but its true) but I already knew that due to shitty alignment and what I described.. just waiting to swap all the shit out... and put in the new parts... then get a proper alignment to my spec.. in meantime I am just driving carefully ... but I didn't expect a frickin rear tie rod to come off holy shit.........!
I am going straight to my mechanic from work... I even forgot my wallet and cell phone home :-/
Problem is I am waiting on some parts.. and I can't install everything without every lil part (i dont want to do double, tripple jobs, just wana do it all at once...), to make matters more complicated SPL was suppose to ship me all the rear arms... but.. due to some issues with traction arms I returned they will take 5-6 weeks to do a coating in cadmium (long story but they have excellent customer service imho)... so thats not cool... I dont know I'll go under the car on the hoist today and see what's up... what can or has to be done...

Control arm. Stupid VW owners.
Glad you made it though. That is scary.
luckie nothing happened... tie that shit up before you go home and then later on remove that subframe. or juss leave the hicas lock and bolt that shit down better

so what did the cop have anything to do with the story?
a_ahmed
05-13-2008, 11:02 AM
He was there, that is all. Read again, understand what happened. First I slowed down from my joy joy ride from the off ramp. Second after a few turns cop could still see me and the golf that was racing crazy towards me, hence 'wth is wrong with you theres a cop there slow down', but in fact he spotted what was on my car and helped me out God bless...
Anyways 3 more hours, and I'm off to my mechanic.......

best of luck, hopefully its something simple that can hold you down till all those parts come through.

05-13-2008, 11:12 AM
I hope it's just a loose nut... not snapped rear tie rod arm.. I can just then have it put back on and tightened and wait until all the parts arrive... but.. if it's snapped I'm screwed... as far as I know Nissan no longer makes these rear hicas tie rods anymore.. and there's no aftermarket cheap ones either (or any for that matter) and well honestly i dont want to waste money on them either :(...
HICAS sucks :( I will set the HICAS subframe on fire and feast over it once I swap in the non hicas one :D HICAS stopper bar will be on sale though :P

Yea..... Rear control arm failure isn't that big of a deal. You should have felt it the car driving different though. I had a threaded RLCA come unthreaded on my bmw because the alignment tech didn't tighten the jamb nuts properly. It wasn't a big deal though. You instantly know something is wrong when the car feels different. Its like a flat tire. I don't understand how people drive on a flat tire and don't know it. It pulls fucking hard whether front or rear. This should be shit people teach you in drivers education.
Anyway... like ZOMG holy shit LOL calm the fuck down. You're not dead, you didn't even lose control. Let us know when your break a tie rod on the interstate. That will be scary shit.

lol its funny how people dnt read what happened.. and now are talking about LCAs :P
Anyways what happened the threading on the outer tie rod got pulled off somehow its as if the nut was yanked and threading broken now its all smooth no threading.. so cant be put back on.. im reviving my winter beater... still have a month to month and a half waiting time on all parts...
What i've decided instead (considering now...) is to completely redo the chassis (bare metal, cut rust out, redo frame, sandblast, stitch weld, cage and repaint black).... so car will be in hybernation for a while... winter beater back up and running :(
Sigh... after much pressuring/convincing from my much older and experienced father this is whats gona happen.. like he said better to have a working perfect well done base and then install all the ever so expensive goodies that im getting...

rear hicas tie rod can make you crash?..
I thought hicas system didn't do that much steering?
a_ahmed
05-14-2008, 07:10 AM
No I won't be stitch welding it myself but I will be supervising one shop doing it, I'll strip the chassis down though. Will need to consult a couple of buddies to find a reputable shop that can do a full cage though...
I'm missing my car already... winter beater back up on the road :( I was hoping to have the car ready for June for the track (all the delays in parts being backordered)... but I guess this won't happen until maybe august... so retarded but oh well it's for the best...
w00tang - anything that can make toe drastically change out of control will make you crash lol...
Anyways it was not so much of a problem to drive honestly, I just had to constantly adjust the steering and drive slower, lots of small movements of the steering that were necessitated, but none the less extremely dangerous and unrepairable for the time being...
Thanks for everyone's concerns... I just created this thread in panic and because something happened that I never really expected and that does not happen daily... The guys that started bullshitting and raving in here while I could have potentially died, no thank you for being assholes, what's wrong with you people... you are sick sick people. Even you mr 'oooh you're not a racer stay home". What a loser. What the hell did I do to you? You don't even know me or met me in real life. Nor did I say I'm a 'racer'. And by the way I only posted on my two fav forums: Zilvia and NRR :)
Anyways, will definetely take lots of pictures of the project in due time... have to plan this out first...
Thank God I'm okay... and would love to thank the guy also who helped me out spotting it on the road. Was very nice of him...

You know I could never understand human beings such as ninjabread and drivefaster or the rest of you who came in here like assholes.
Wow so I created a thread about something that happened the other day that was potentially life threatening. This is a forum after all, it's meant for chit chat, discussion, sharing experiences. I'm sorry for threatening your existence.
Obviously responding to you only wastes any little intellect I may have, time which is precious, and changes little as you'll continue to accumulate your mal-intended ways.
I could never really understand people like you. Do you benefit yourself by being cynical or sarcastic, do you benefit me? Anything or anybody?
Did you make your life any better or easier by shitting on me for no apparent reason when I intended no harm or evil towards you I don't even know you? You people have an inherent sickness of the ego, an inherent sickness of self-esteem, a sick heart.
Great so you had a life-threatening situation and as such now you can be cynical, sarcastic and a condescending loser? You have some sickness in you.
So what if this was not even death threatening or dangerous and I posted it? Does it happen every day?
Do you spill coffee every day on your pants? No. Should you post it? Probably not, but do you have to make such an analogy to my experience. No. No need, because spilling coffee is not the same as snapping a piece of your car's suspension.
Great you 'almost died' by losing a shift knob, so serious like omg you could not shift. Should I shit down on you like a cynical or sarcastic asshole?
Honestly for the last 11 years I have used the internet, moderated forums, administered forums, ran websites (all non car related), but one thing I could not understand is this inherent evil in some human beings.
If you can not help somebody or contribute in a positive manner... keep your tongue rested, your mouth sealed, and think if you can benefit someone or anyone. And check your intentions as to whether you are intending to insult, intending to help, or intending to worsen something.
You are just sick people with low self-esteem and damaged egos that you try to bolster all the time. Either due to damaged youth or something, something bothering you while you struggle to survive in this world. Imagine whatever evil you do to others being done to you 10x worse, then reconsider doing it to others.
In real life you low self-esteem ego pumped kiddies would not be able to look me in the eye or speak like a human being, like men. if you tried most likely you'd just show your immaturity, your attitude, your impatience, while trying to act 'tough' while beneath that skin all you are, are troubled youth with no purpose in life. Excited about what little they can do, what little they have, when in the grand scheme of things you and I are nothing but specks of sand in the universe.
All I can think of is that you are inexperienced truly of life, of ever so many different people this planet of ours has, spoiled in this rich part of the world where when you experience some little suffering you think the world will end because of your so slightly minor experience in contrast to the grand scheme of things of the real suffering of people in the world. Or if someone experiences something or gets something or enjoys something in his life you have to feel jealousy or contempt or envy and have to put them down to make yourself feel better. Such people are truly poor souls. If you could only ponder upon how insignificant we ALL are in this universe. Lesser than pebbles of sand in a grand desert and lesser than a tiny drop of water in all the oceans and rivers of the world.
I am a human being like you and I. Cars are just a hobby of mine, a small part of my life that I enjoy. The reason I come to car forums is to learn of others with similar interests, to share my interests, to hear and see others', the whole concept of being a 'car enthusiast'. Everyone has opinions, different tastes in the grand scheme of things... I hardly benefit from condescending behavior and neither does anyone else. There would be no need for 'moderators' if people realized this.
Even in real life, in the physical not virtual world. If you can not help someone, do not dishelp them, rather try to find ways to benefit them and help them, make them smile. You wouldn't want any less nor expect anything different in your life from others. If only all people thought like that, the world as a whole would be a lot better, not to mention of course... car forums or any other forum for that matter.

How much toe is the rear wheel allowed with the hicas setup? I mean if its like the non hicas I have a toe rod. If it broke I'm sure I'd be alright. The traction arm, UCA and LCA would still hold it together. There would only be a few degrees of free toe play. Its not like you broke a tie rod on the front suspension. That would be different. So, Relax super freak out guy, you're making yourself look like a panic attack on wheels.
