View Full Version : MAFS wire troubles?

Alright, so I was trying to replace my clutch fan on my S14 and for some reason my MAFS doesn't have a normal plug like I've seen other 240's have. It has 3 wires with mini plugs going into the MAFS (white/red/blue). I didn't pay attention to the order of wires before they fell out and then I tried plugging them back in the best I could remember.

When I plugged them back in my engine check light turned on and my car started to sputter really bad at idle and wouldn't rev above 2.5k. We kept messing with the combos of wires to try to get it right and got 2 combos where my idle was stable, but at 1.5k and wouldn't rev above 2.5k still.

Finally we got a combo where it was still sputtering, but I could rev above 2.5k even with my engine check light. We thought my motor was just flodded, so we let it run for a while until it would get better. But it just got worse and now we're stumped. It sounds like it's not running on all cylinders, but we got too tired and it was too late to check and keep working on the car.

Sorry for the extremely long read, but this is my daily and I need to get this thing running. It was perfectly fine before then.

Edit: BTW my car is a 98 OBDII KA

There's no real magic to the MAF, if you've got the combo that lets the engine rev past 2.5k, you've got it right. The CEL needs to be reset, though, and the engine might be in 'safe mode' till that happens.

Figured you'd make a post about this. Hopefully we find out the proper combination. If anyone with a stock S14 kouki could shed some light on the proper wiring setup on the stock MAFS we'd really appreciate it.

Do I need the OBDII reader to reset the CEL? Or can I just reset my ECU by taking off the battery?

I know that'll do it, but I think reading the code off the LED on the ECU clears the CEL also (not positive, I haven't had a CEL in years lol). the FSM only talks about using the Consult device to read codes, but here's what it says about wiring the MAFS:
