So my wife asked me the other day what I wanted for fathers day. I'm thinking a new camera but still undecited. Can anyone speak from experience or just product knowledge on these 2 cameras? I really like the Canon since they have been around for a while and seem like they are one of the leaders in SLR's. On the other hand is Sony which bought out Minolta which was also a good brand and about $100 less. I have seen both in person and Sony just says "buy me" all over it. What do you guys think? Thanks!

Keep in mind that this will be my first SLR camera and from what I hear they are good beginer ones.

Canon for sure. As far as getting your money's worth, canon is your best choice. Tons of lens and acessories for you to choose from. With Sony, you are just paying for the brand name instead of quality. Sony sucks.. Canon ftw!

canon canon canon canon
you'll make up that 100 difference the first time you shoot with a nice piece of glass.

Plus, the canon has a better sensor anyway

I think I may just go with the Canon. Maybe even the XSi. Thanks for all the feedback. I really appreciate it.

i outgrew my Rebel XT in less than a year.

dont get the XTi, you'll regret not getting the newer stuff a la XSi or 40d.

i'm going to pick up my 40d real soon.

i was also looking into the sony stuff, but there seems to be a lack of general consumer support for their product. if you have any friends that have any SLR's i suggest you go with whatever they have, that way you can learn faster by shooting pics and taking advice from them.

05-07-2008, 05:34 AM
honestly, the nikon canon thing, is all about feeling

if you like hte feel go for it
they are pretty even, and nikon you can use any nikon lens on it

canon is retarded with lens changes

Z33dori
05-07-2008, 05:44 AM
yea i think what really did it for me was actually the feel of the bodies. the canon just seems to small for my hands. it was do able to hold, but not the most comfortable for me. But the quality of the pics was really nice.

yokotas13
05-07-2008, 05:59 AM
i go the bottom grip for hte 40d

so much better

I came to this party late

Anyway if you were looking at an entry level camera I would either choose canon XSi or the nikon equivalent. Im not sure of the nikon model, because I own a canon 10d. One thing to watch out for is some Nikons dont have auto focus which a lot of people hate.

Canon's entry level stuff runs a little small, but its a world of a difference if you add a battery grip. This is personal preference though. It adds an additional batter which = additional weight, but you gain a portrait shutter button and extended battery use.

You can always go used and get a nice setup rather then spending more on brand new stuff. A friend of mine bought the Canon XSi with a 50mm F/1.8 all new for around 900ish from best buy. The 50mm is a great prime lens and is SHARP, but some people will feel limited because it is fixed. Alternatively you can use that same 900 and get a used 20d for about $400 which is a far better camera then the XSi. You now have $500 to spend on a lens. I would either go with a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 or Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5. I've had both these lenses and the image quality is superb for the price. The tamron's IQ is comparable to Canon's top lense at the fraction of the price, but I hated the loud and slow auto focus. I still have the Sigma and love the range and the quiet motor.

yea canon all the way...i have a 350D(Rebel XT) and I'm happy right now, but i'll be investing in a 30d or 40d soon....

I would say get the XTI or the XSI, that way you don't spend TOO much money on a camera body and suddenly decide that the camera is just going to sit around the house...

but shit, if your wife feels like going all out....Canon 1DMkIII....roughly $8,000...give or take a few hundered bucks...

yeah my 75-300 sucks balls. what he probably meant that its really slow to autofocus. and lots of hunting as well.

and as far as the rebel line goes...you HAVE to get a battery grip otherwise its just way too uncomfortable.

yokota, you got the grip for the 40d? even without the grip the 40d feels great in your hands, so its hard for me to imagine the improvement in grip.

to the original poster, if theres one thing the sony's have over the nikon and canon's, its ergonomics. they feel freagn great.

no, he meant slow, as in high F stop, as in you have to use slow shutter speeds. it autofocuses quick and accurately.

Well to add to my old thread a few months ago... The XTi with lenses that I got for fathers day is gone. You fellas were right. I bought a 40D kit about a month ago and I am really happy. I need to find a good zoom/telephoto lens. Any experience with the 70-200? Thanks again! I hate that my 28-135 creeps out when you aim down. Sux!

The 70-200 f4 is a great lens for the price. I don't own one but I borrow my friends pretty often. Amazon usually has it for like $600.

if you want to go even cheaper, the 55-250 IS f/4-5.6 has great image quality, and is less than 300. Plus it has image stabilization. the 70-200 blows it away though, but if you want something with more range on both ends, its not horrible at all
