So I've been having this issue for quite some time, thinking it was something simple I just can't figure it out. I'm a rookie mechanic trying to build myself my SR... Below is some details about my car and work that has been done.
[ The Issue ]
- When the car is running, the transmission will NOT go into gear. When the car is off, the transmission will GO into gear like butter.
[ The Fixes ]
- I replaced the slave cylinder, bled the clutch a good total of 30-45 times. Replaced the master cylinder, did a fluid change....
[ The Car ]
- 1990 240sx SR20DET, Nismo Motor & Tranny Mounts, Trust AirNX Intake Kit.
Any ideas of things to look into, tips or things I should check would be appriciated. Please don't flame, I'm not so intrested in that. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure the Throw Out bearing was installed Correctly?
Also I know this sounds dumb, But I have seen people do it. Is the Clutch Installed correctly? Flywheel side against the flywheel?
I had a guy install the clutch backwards on a maxima once and cause the same problem as your having.

Sounds like a throwout bearing or slave problem.

He said he already replaced the slaves. All from master to transmission. So its gotta be something else.
Either Throwout or clutch.

Have someone pump the clutch pedal for you repeatedly while you watch the slave cylinder. If the slave isn't moving the fork around much or too much, the system wasn't bled properly, or may be leaking somewhere. Hence why it will not go into gear. These hydro setups are very unforgiving. Do you still have the stock devil box?
If the slave cylinder is actuating properly then there is no issue with the hydraulics. Unless the TO bearing is rusted worse than the titanic, it will still work. It isn't an issue. If it was at a point where it would not work the slightest bit, the transmission would sound like a rocket ship.

Agreed somthing is keeping your clutch engaged.
what kind of clutch is it?
My friends GTI-R did the same thing he was running a nismo kevlar clutch and the stringy fibers in it got caught up in the pressure plate so it acted as if the clutch wouldnt disengage.
it was a lot of stringy stuff like someone threw a ball of yarn in his clutch lol
Does it grind when you try to put it in gear?
is it only first gear or all gears?

It doesn't go into gear at all when running, it doesn't grind but it makes the car idle lower as in its going to stall (sound wise). It's the stock SR Clutch.

Have no idea what the devil box is, the slave cylinder fully moves.
For those of you who say its the throw out or clutch, the clutch nor throwout was never replaced before the swap.

It's time they were then. Sounds like the disc has lost a spring or the throwout bearing has become jammed at the end of the input shaft. You could have also broken the fork pivot.

^Bingo, my buddies sprung cluch lost 2 springs and it wouldn't go into gear. We had to rpm match to get it in gear to get it home to fix it. Your best bet is to open the trans. and find out. Also the "Devil Box" is also known as your Dampener Box. Just bypass it next time your down there, it makes the clutch system easier to bleed.

teckster fyi Thwe so called devil box is the 3'' by 3'' metal box with a 3 foot line connected to your clutch line its porpose is to dampen your pedal feel but if it was me I would bypass it so it doesn't make bleeding your clutch a bitch from now on.

exactly what i was going to post... seen it happen a time or 2.
also on a totally freakish accident.. a buddies clutch broke and a spring on the clutch disc wedged itself causing the clutch to engage.. talk about a pain in the ass troubleshooting it.. we didnt find the problem until we removed the clutch then the spring fell out almost went unnoticed. and more of a pain fixing (it was a Celica All-Trac).

So pretty much replace the clutch and that should fix it?

Most likely. I actually had the exact same prob. I replaced it with a 6 puck exedy. The clutch i took out the springs were very lose sitting in there.

The 89-94 models had both SOHC and DOHC versions depending on trim level. I don't know if there's a difference between them though.

i agree with clutch disc loosing its springs and/or pressure plate teeth broken/bent. but another thing i found that got me stumped was the dam pilot bushing not letting go of the shaft. check that when you pull tranny and make sure you anti-seize it!!! i change my pilot bushing and it fixed the problem for like 2 months. now i'm at the same situation again. but i can still work magic by going from 4th-2nd to get into 1st. now my suspection is tranny itself have too much shaft play... i think i wont be able to tell until i pull tranny.
