I never tried RE01R before.
But Nitto NT01 is very very good; however they are really spendy.
595 is good as well, but it cannot compare with the NT01.
Why dont you try Falken RT615
I have them on my setup right now and im loving it
Don't use an R-comp if you're a relative track n00b(it sounds like it).
Just go with a good affordable street tire like a Falken RT-615, Hankook RS-2, Kumho MX. Those are all plenty fast enough, and have good track manners.

ill only say RT615 SUCKS... maybe cuz i had such high expectations on my evo. it was so greasy on hot asphalt. even on milder days, my stock yoko advans were significantly superior. even after 4000 miles the tires never got "ungreasy". ok ill take it back on the rt615, they dont SUCK but they have alot of hype. i would not recommend them for RWD cars unless you drift hehe

RE01Rs are pretty good, but they're crazy expensive now. They're grippier than RT-615s in the dry and DEFINITELY in the wet, but they have pretty soft sidewalls and they don't run terribly wide. They are also prone to the same heat problems that the 615 has. I liked mine, but they are too expensive now... I can get a set of R-comps instead for the same price.
Have you considered the Dunlop Direzza Z1? They are a lot like the RE01R but with stiffer sidewalls and better heat control (Star Spec), and they're cheaper... basically a 615 carcass with a different compound.
Or Toyo R1R?

havent had any experience with the direzza
Re01rs arent that expensive for the tire they are.
they are goign on a 9.5, so im looking at maybe a 235 or 245 tire not a big stretch but not square

RE01R's for the win. You'll see them run them on BMI Touge Challenge all the time. Many of the guys at my work run them for scca events.

ive used RE01Rs and 595RS
the RS were MAD GRIPPY!!! it was crrrraazzzzzyyyyy
and cheaper then RE01rs in a 255/35/18
id go w/ the RS
do a 245 should be fine.
dirrezza z1 is awesome too im told. is ok but not nearly as grippy as RE01rs/595RS or the Nitto
i felt the R1Rs and they were mad soft. ive heard really good things
my favorite tires currently for drifting (front/rears use them on both if can):
AD07 (most favorite evar! all around great) 235/40/17 (Fronts)
595RS (mad grip even at the 90 psi! ) 255/35/18 (rears)
RE01 US Spec (very consistent tires>VERY consistant, love these tires) 245/40/18 (rear) 235/40/17 (fronts)
up next to test drifting: Dirrezza Z1!
oh i dont like RT615s all that much. ran them before. not impressed at all. cost is good but overall, i dont like them.

I have some RE050s on my s2k..
they grip quite nicely.
215/235 stagger from factory.
If you're indifferent to the cost and life, get the NT01's. They'll blow away the other tires on the track. They're not street tires, so that is kinda obvious, but you know that.
I guess I just don't see the point in spending a lot for street tires when the differences are so minute compared to stepping up to even a middle of the road R-comp.

kumho spt isn't even remotely in the same class as the others
the kumho mx is meant to compete as against them as an autox/track tire

i guess i might add these tires wont be driven on daily
i have a second set of wheels to mount them on.
so life isnt really an issue
i drive on federals daily.
ill prolly end up with the Re01R

The NT01's are by FAR the best tires on that list. The NT01's are true r-compounds, the other tires listed are street/track tires. If you really want maximum grip then go with the NT01's, you will not be dissapointed. Other R-compound options to consider would be:
toyo ra-1 and r-888
hankook z214
avon tech-r
BFG r-1
and of course hoosiers
The hankooks, avon's, BFG's, and the hoosiers are all slicks with 2 circumferential grooves. The toyos have tread, unless you shave them. The hoosiers are pretty much the stickiest DOT tires that you can buy.
