This one's a cheap one, folks. $130/day or $210/both days.

So far, attendees from Zilvia are (for Saturday, May 24):

1. Steve S14 (s13 hatch)
2. autobahNESSA (s14 zenki)
3. sr20detman (s13 coupe)
4. racepar1
5. driftage240
6. Ty
7. Alex
8. Paul - Maybe?
9. UNITEDMASTER
10. Porkybmx - (badass)
11. Pearl - (S14 zenki)

Anyone else planning to go to this one? It'd be cool to see more than us 4 from Zilvia out there.

i've wanted to go to a track day for so long but i was always weary of going ... didn't know how many tires would be enough, if the engine would withstand heat with stock thermostat, etc etc etc. . . any track day beginner's tips?

autobahNESSA

I don't think you should worry too much about tires. As long as you have enough tread that passes the organization's minimum requirement you are good to go and even drive home on them and daily drive on them etc (it's what I have done and what all the other people listed above has done). Not to say that it isn't smart to pack along some backup tires or wheels.

As for you being weary about whether or not your motor can handle the heat, if your motor is reliable when you daily drive it, then I would say you also have nothing to worry about also. It's always a risk when you take out a car to the track so just keep your eye out on warning signs that something is wrong. Most of the people I go with go on a completely stock motor. The people who had problems with overheating were the ones that also had the same problems when they were daily driving it. I go on a completely stock motor and it's been holding up great time and time again.

As for tips...don't cheap out on a helmet! A lot of people cheap out on their helmet and I don't understand why anyone would cheap out on protecting their one and only head. Also, don't be afraid to sign up for beginners and take your time to learn the track. Too many people go to the track afraid that they're going to "suck" or whatever so they drive like an idiot by driving way above their skill level, causing some major accidents. Go to the track to learn and don't be afraid to ask instructors or others for help and advice. Just make sure to stay within your own comfort level and don't push it.

I hope you can come!!

This time of year the temps are still cool so you shouldn't have to much to worry going out there for the first time. If your car isn't heavily moded a koyo rad would keep the temps rock solid, if everything else is working fine. Streets is pretty smooth so you probably don't need to bring a lot of tires so an extra set or pair should do you good. If your tires are brand new more than likely they'll easily last you there and back and the track sessions.

Things to bring:

1. Tools ***
2. Fold out chairs
3. Fold out tent if rollin with entourage
4. Extra fluids oil/water, etc...
5. Sunglasses even if there's no sun its good to protect your eyes from the sand being kicked up by the wind. My eye got badly scratched and got really swollen and killed the rest of my day. Only ran 2 sessions.
6. Food
7. Your own hottie to show off to and its going to be a cock fest

***Just remeber Penske racing isn't out there trying to scout people out to drive for them so stay clear from the Initial D wannabe's on the track (Streets brings a lot of these guys out) and most importantly use your better judgement if you want to drive home in one piece. Hope that helps any.

When buying a helmet I would highly recommend a full face. Not only does it look cooler and you can put more stickers on it it will save your face from biting the steering wheel in a serious impact. Years back a Porsche driver in one of the HPDE groups spun and hit a few cars and shattered his jaw on the steering wheel. If you're pretty, do it for the ladies and protect yourself, if you're ugly, the full face helps to hide that. LOL.

ps Bell helmets are really good and relatively cheep. Go to their website and find a few you like and let me know.

Hours are cut at work. 22 instead of 35/40. I'm missing 300-400 bucks out of my paycheck.

And I have to take care of some Lojack stuff and I have 700$ insurance bill coming up soon. grr.

Don't have the 130 for the event and 200+ for a helmet.

I think I am the only one going to the May 11th track event through speedventures, how do you guys like speedtrialsusa? is everything run pretty smoothly? how long is each session and how many session do you usually get?

I would like to join but I have work that day so that sucks, but got to make money to go to future track events! haha

ronmcdon

that's cheap. redline, tcra, and speedventures usually charge $300. any idea if they time the laps and lease transponders? If so, I'm sold.

lol, bring out the bbq and beer too while you're at it :P j/k

what I would recomend is
-extra quart or more of engine oil
-tire pressure guage
-masking tape to cover up lower bumper, skirts, headlights/fogs from gravel.
-suntan
-good book or some other form of entertainment to kill time between runs

wsir actually has decent places to eat. theres the golden cantina which has above average mexican, some bar along the way w/ above average burgers. also mc'd's, taco bell, and some other stuff if you just want to pick up fast food. I don't recommend the WSIR cafeteria. it's kinda expensive for the quality and quantity you get.

No beer but I usually have steaks or carne asada when I have the grill out, which is often. Thats how we're remembered at the track not from our racing accomplishements. :bowrofl: "Oh Momentum GT...the guys with the tons of bbq and rib eye steaks? I know them." LOL.

Ahh, Paul!! It would be sick if we finally all got to go to the track together haha. It's filling up quick, I was originally going to go Sunday but I procrastinated too long and intermediate was all filled. Saturday seems to be 75% filled right now. Hope you go!!

I really wanted to go to the event with speedventures but they are too pricey for my budget right now. I no longer have beef with running events with stusa because they do try their best to make everything run smooth and safe. Usually, I get about 5-6 sessions every track event.

that's cheap. redline, tcra, and speedventures usually charge $300. any idea if they time the laps and lease transponders? If so, I'm sold.

Last time they had transponders for lease when I went to big willow at wsir. I don't know if they'll have them again this time around, I hope so though!

beginner grp sunday is open, but that would be absolute torture if there's 25 track noobs on at the same time.

autobahNESSA
05-06-2008, 02:11 AM
The beginners group doesn't really have much room for noobs to eff up on. It's pretty much strict training alllll day with the instructors.

ronmcdon
05-06-2008, 11:04 AM
Its not so much about the beginners messing up, it's just that they typically drive slower. That, and when you have 25 car on a smaller track like Streets at the same time, there's a lot higher likelihood with traffic piling up more often. which in turn leads to just following slow cars around instead of good seat time. It happens to almost every event I've been to, even when there's considerably less than 25 cars on track.

articdragon192

speaking of autoX, speedventures hosted a killer 2-event last weekend at ca speedway. I had like 80-90 runs each day that lasted 30-40 secs per run. was only $80 a day. was like 2 yrs seat time in 1 day, and destroyed the front driver's side Z1 tire on my civic. never had so much fun autoXing in my life! was even better than the annual scca solo2 autoX.

I think speedventures only does this event like once a yr. those of you who autoX in socal and didn't go missed out!

I just got home from the event and it was a blast! The organization was pretty meh, but it was still a load of fun. I got some good pics of some of the zilvia members that attended and a couple pics from the drift event that was at the balcony. At the nasa event at the big track a guy driving a mini in one of the HPDE groups flipped in turn 9 and apparently is in pretty bad shape. They had to send the medevac helicopter for him and there are rumors of amputations giong around. We should all pray for him and his family. It is one thing for a real racer to get hurt, he KNOWS and fully accepts the risks of what he is doing, but a HPDE driver is just out there to have fun and is not necessarily 100% aware of what can happen. It really sucks! I will post the pics that I have tomorrow night. Good luck and have fun to all the guys going tomorrow!

I really don't know how to respond to this. We all wanna see pics of the car, but the fact that that is all that you care about does not speak well of you as a person. Maybe I am overreacting or misunderstanding you, but to me the well being of the person involved is much more important than pics of the carnage.

you are over reacting indeed. I'm not asking for picture of the guy, i'm asking for pictures of the accident

1. to see how bad it was and get an idea of what is being talked about
2. to see WHERE exactly he crashed. Myself and friends go there often and i would like to know where other people crash. (like the chicane at HTM...that way you know what NOT to do)

Call me an asshole or whatever you want, but asking for pictures of the crash will not make the poor guy in any better or worse of shape. There is nothing at all wrong with showing pictures of a crash at a RACE TRACK. If anything, it may help someone in the future from doing the same mistake.

For crying out loud, you act like i just offered to buy his car or something.

wow, sounds like you guys had a lot of fun. wish I could have joined up just to shoot the shit, if nothing else. unfortunately, I had to pull out due to unexpected circumstances in my company. perhaps another time.

eh what do you mean about the organization being meh? how does it compare to other hpde grps?

sorry to hear about the horrific accident, and I my prayers go out to the injured driver. the infamous turn 9 is the reason why I refuse to run 'big willow'. When you're pushing over 100 on a sweeper, any unforeseen factors like dirt, coolant, etc that unsettles the car can be disastrous. button-willow is little scary too with all the blind corners.

The guy was airlifted, that alone tells you how bad the crash was, and i said where it happened on my post on the previous page. Your post asks only for pics and expresses no concerns for the driver, that makes you come off as only interested in seeing the carnage. Maybe that's not how you meant it, but that's how it sounds. If you wanna know what not to do, it is simple. If you are going off track do it as straight as possible, try not to go sideways because the tires can catch and you end up on your roof. It can not always be avoided, but do your best. The OTHER moral is if you are going to go to the track have as much safety equipment as you can possibly afford.

Hello all I ran both SAT & SUN with STUSA,it was a good event we got 5 sessions on SAT and 6 on SUN. I also went up to the balcony for a lil while(Black Coupe). As far as the accident on the big track goes ,racer to racer its not cool to goo goo ga ga at anothers misfortune(thats just me)!!!??. I actully saw the end of the crash. It was a typical drop 2 wheels off in 9 shoot back across the track, dig in with the right side wheels & over you go. Fron what I was told by Mike Peters (HPDE 3 instructor) the seat collapsed(stock seat, stock belts). FYI the entire roof was colapsed( A-pilar & B-pilar), just nasty

Anyhow ,It was good to see some fellow 240 people actually at the track, doing GRIP. Maybe we can all come together again at another event. LMK PEACE!!!!!$$$$$????? for all of you that where out there you got POSI rep!!!!!!!

Our little s2k sandwich in the last session on sat was yummy! LOL! I was all over that douche after you let us by adn he just couldn't accept that a lowly sil-80 was faster than him! Did you try to disconnect the rear sway like I said, or were you too busy driving?

Well here's the pics, I'm gunna start with my car. Sorry unitedmaster, but I didn't get any of you. :duh:

This is my favorite pic of my car. If you look closely I am actually lifting the inside front wheel because the rear is soooooo planted! Ahh the wonders of no rear sway bar!

Ok now we'll move on to the other 240's at the event. My apologies to those of you that I didn't get a chance to photograph!

Now on to the drift event at the balcony!

LS1 powered FC owning the fuck outta EVERYONE! God it sounded sooooooo sweet! The pic does no justice to the ginormous clouds of smoke this thing was leaving!

The car is feeling much better too. Unfortuanetly I was only able to squeeze a 1:32.67 out of the car though. The track seemed a couple seconds slower due to the rain and new pavement. I don't know what anyone else was running so it's kinda hard to judge weather or not it actually was slower or if I am just convincing myself of that because I expected to run a couple seconds faster. Whatever though, fuck the times it was really fun and that is what really matters.

Looks like a great event! Last one I went to was flooded with evos...and damn they were fast! Were they not at this one?

Hopefully you guys are at the next event as it seems like i'm one of the only 240s gripping at the events i've been to.

After hearing the car that flipped had smashed a and b pillars....scary....hopefully he pulls through. I sometimes wonder how roll cages are an option at a real race track. The back turn of the streets is even pretty scary for an offtrack.

It's not the evos that usually give me a problem, it's the s2k's which are generally just a bit faster than the evo's. I find most evo drivers have so much money that they do not find it necessary to pull their heads out of their asses and actually learn how to drive, the s2k guys are generally better drivers as the s2k is a true driver's car. I was pleasantly surprised to see all the 240's out this time. Like you I am generally pretty much alone at grip events. Post up the next event you are going to! Us 240 guys should organize and start rolling to events together because it is kinda lame to be the only 240 with all the evo, sti, s2k, bmw, etc... drivers looking down their noses at you. Although it is pretty sweet when you put them all (well at least most) to shame on the track!

Take a chill pill. I can't quite make out the diagonal thing in the interior shot. I think it might be the OEM seat belt partially cut and still fastened, but I'm not sure. Also, with more res if theres any part of a 4 point harness sticking out, I might be able to see it.

Regardless of what you think you do or don't see there is no need for a higher res photo, it is pretty morbid of you to even ask for one man the fucking guy is in pretty damn bad shape. As a long time racer I find it unacceptable to drool over somebody's misfortune. Take a look and let it go, it is not cool to gawk at something like that.

You act like everyone should turn their head and pretend it didn't happen. In reality, crashing happens and usually people want to know what happened and how it happened, what mods the car had, what type of restraints, how he offtracked, how he crashed, how he flipped, how many times, etc. etc.

Its not morbid, its curiosity. No one is asking for pictures of the poor guy, but instead of the car...a piece of metal. I haven't heard anyone badmouth the driver or wish harm upon him. Although i too am curious as to what restraints he had and how many times that car went over, I still wish him the very best and hope he has a rapid and full recovery. Lets not overreact here

At the track anytime a driver is injured in a crash the track officials cover the car untill the crew comes to get it. It is a sign of disrespect to gawk and drool over a car that somebody was injured in. If the guy walked away it is a totally different story, drool and gawk and ask questions all you want. THAT is the difference here, the guy is in the hospital. It is a matter of racer etiquette. I know most of you don't understand or even care about that, but I do. We all wanted to see pics, now we have them and there is no need for more pics. Take a look and say a prayer for the guy involved, anything more is just plain disrespectful to him.

I think hes asking to see pics of the mini for future safety reasons. If we can figure out why the driver was so badly injured that it led to his death (what if any after market safety devices failed or did not work properly), maybe someone else's life can be saved. It is possible that all the safety equipment did its job, but could not handle that severe of a roll over, maybe more safety equipment should be required to be able to run on such a high speed track like WSIR...

Thanks for the compliments! ( i was driving the black LS1 FC at the balcony)

He was in a racing seat and wearing 4-point harnesses and still ended up partially out of the belts. The lesson to learn here is that if you are going off at high speed just let it go and try to do it as straight as possible. The guy followed his natural instincts to try to save it and ended up losing his life because of it. It is quite scary because he had the same amount of safety equipment as most everybody at the track and it did nothing for him. We as drivers have to be smarter and fight our natural instincts. Should he have just gone straight off those pics and this story wouldn't exist. RIP

05-28-2008, 12:25 PM
I agree with you on driving it straight off. Its the best way if you are going off. If the guy came out of the belts, then the belts were not mounted properly, or the harness bar (if he had one) bent and allowed the belts to loosen... Or the seat mounts or sliders moved...or the belts were junk...Or maybe he had his belts on loose? I dont know. But i do know that a good properly mounted seat and good properly mounted belts wont move in a crash. Its better to LEARN from everyones mistakes/misfortunes rather than just your own. It could save your life. Thats why they do accident investigations, so they can make changes and save life's.

Bingo. I work as an instructor with speedventures and I often have to evaluate if someone's naive attempt at a "safety system" is going to kill me, him, or his girlfriend. It's not black and white either. Do I refuse to ride with him? Do I kick him out? Do I fasten an OEM harness and let him use his 4 pt if he wants to? Do I insist on a rollbar at Big Willow?

There are two safety systems in the car. The nut behind the wheel is the active system, while the harnesses, seats, rollbar/cage, crumple zones and others compose the passive system. Tragically, at least one failed.

Both deserve careful consideration.

NASA will conduct their investigation, but their statement doesn't give me much confidence in it being public. In the meantime I want to learn as much as I can because it might save a student or myself this weekend.

I was at the NASA event when this happened. They postponed my race group as the life flight was called in. During a briefing Saturday, they told us that he had an "inadequate" safety harness and was actually found in the passenger seat. Though we were told Sunday that he was responding to treatment (though in critical condition), people at the track with binoculars said that they had not seen a body loaded onto the life flight.

Turn 9 is scary as hell. They say he hit the drainage ditch, which tells us he was going really, really fast. Its one thing to talk about avoiding instinct and trying to correct, but my first time at WSIR through turn 9, all I could think was, "when in doubt, both feet out" ...

His incident really reassured me to stick with factory safety equipment until I can afford doing everything right--professionally.
