so my bank (UMB, a semi-local one) has fucked me for the last time. i'm moving on. who do you use? does anybody use Bank of America, US Bank, or National City? it's my understanding that US Bank has a checking account that accumulates interest, and no atm fees, for free, which beats the shit out of this garbage account i have.

I have accounts at Wells Fargo, and America First...
Neither are that great. Wells Fargo has a pretty nice online banking thing, but I don't think their interest rates are as good. I use America First for my savings because at the time they had a better interest rate. I have no idea if it's still better. I can't keep on top of it.

I bank with Washington Mutual/WAMU. They've been reasonable for the most part. IIRC overdraft is $25. I was with Wells Fargo prior. Their $33 overdraft fees and policies were just out of control.
Eh, if you're trying to open a savings account, I would discourage you from opening one with the major banks. the interest rates are usually junk 1% apr or lower. essentially you're going to be losing a lot $ with the way inflation is nowadays.

I also just switched from Wells Fargo to WAMU. WAMU has overall better customer service, fees, and policies.

What features do you want in a bank? Would you consider an internet based bank to earn more interest? For me, I need a local bank that will give me access to my cash in case I need it, but the majority of my liquid savings (emergency fund) is in an online high-yield savings (for example: FNBO-3.25%APY, HSBC-3.05%APY, EmigrantDirect-2.75APY, INGdirect-3%APY) and CDs. If you are like me, lower APY on $500-$1k isn't going to make or break you so just keep that "now" cash in a local joint where you can access all the time via ATM rebates and decent online capability. Most internet banks will let you transfer funds from your emergency fund to your local bank, but it takes at least 1 business day, so having some "now" money locally helps a lot.
Bankrate.com has all the latest APY for every major institution: I'll even spoon feed the link to you in STL, MO: http://bankrate.com/brm/rate/bank_chkratehome.asp?params=MO,34&sort=11&product=31&online_flag=

No. Bank of America has THE WORST customer service ever.
If bank of america was a person, it'd be the dead beat dad that is quick to take money, and late as shit to give.
I've been hit with 7 overdrafts FOR NO APPARENT REASON. My buddy works at a B of A, has looked over my accounts over and over, and couldn't find any reason i was charged for em. I've called em, told them about it, and it takes a month to return my money to me. Shitty.
Do what most smart people do and get with a credit union. I'm planning on switching over to Arrowhead Credit Union, overdrafts are like, 4 bucks, and the customer care is legit. Leagues ahead of B of A.
Same kinda ordeal happened to me, twice. One with my insurance not going thru, and the second with my phone bill. the insurance netted me 7 Overdrafts, and phone bill got me 4. On my account, as it stands, i've got a total of 14 Overdrafts since 2003. Pretty damn gay.

That sucks. I've dealt with their customer service numerous times, and everything was fixed before the phone was even hung up.

I used to work customer service at Wells Fargo and i saw people with 50-60 od's a year. 14 in 5 years isnt too bad.

yes, i have an account with Gateway Federal Employees Credit Union (my dad worked for the government before he retired), but i don't use it. they don't have online banking which is more or less a requirement for me.

I had washington mutual, and I had no beefs with them. When I got to langley there were no wamu branches around so I went with Langley Federal Credit Union.
I'm not a huge fan of LFCU, changing my address/doing money transfers to my dad are a total pain in the ass. Once my loan is paid off I'll be switching banks I think.

Fuck bank of america in the face! Those cock suckers always decide to keep the change when ever my bank account is at around $30 or under so then i get raped with OD fees! I have never over drafted ever until i signed up for that (keep the change) scam. I will be switching to commerce very soon! Great customer service and open untill 9pm 7 days a week.

to be honest, it depends on the local branches. wells fargo is alright but alot of their employees are nubs and slow. it's better for college people because checkings services, intro level credit cards, and the fact that a lotta campuses have wells fargo on them.
BoA has decent service, a plus is their massively abundant ATMs. But yes, you'll be more likely to run into crass employees who dont give a shit. transfers will take longer because they have a lotta checkpoints (though sometimes unnecessary)to run through.
WaMu is awesome, i would honestly say go with WaMu or a good local credit union, and then open a BoA checkings for those times you're in a cash clinch.

my wife and i both have wamu
no problems until she decided she wanted an online CD
but she couldn't create an account for some reason so she called the 800 number and had the guy make an account and transfer her money from her old CD.
then she wanted to add money but couldn't find where to do it on the website, so she called up to add money to the CD, and the guy had no clue how to do it so she called back and got some lady who did it.
then the next month she called to add more money and the guy told her it's impossible to add money to an online CD. she she had a big argument about that.
then the next month she called to add more money and same shit, so she got some high up guy on the phone and he told her it's not possible to add money to an online CD and not possible that the guy she talked to made her account for her. so she said she wants to take her money out cuz it's a worthless thing that has no reason to be called an "online CD" since the only thing you can do with it online is look at it, and the guy who made her account said she could transfer money into it, but now she can't. of course they wouldn't let her to that without the penalty.
so we found this document on their site that says you can't add money to an online CD unless they decide you can.
so... it is possible, they just didn't decide she could do it those last two times, but she could the first time.
so we're quitting wamu, cuz that's really gay

Another +1 for NFCU... I was actually in Kansas City when I first started banking with them (I applied for a car loan, which was approved within 24hrs). Now I'm in Cali and any loan I apply for I can get in a matter of hours. They're pretty excellent. I also hear any credit union is pretty good though, like everyone was saying.
