The cop that told your brother that was just being a dick. There is a sound level law, as long as your exhaust is below the legal level for CA (92db or so I believe) it is legal. It is NOT illegal to modify your exhaust and they CANNOT impound your car. Now if your bro didn't have a cat then what I just said goes right out the window. You MUST have a cat in CA. If you don't they can send you to the smog ref for sure and maybe impound it, but I'm not sure that they can impound it in that situation either.

correct... exhaust must be under 93db. You can also request for a meter to prove that it is under 93db. But if the cop is gonna be an a-hole? just ride it out.

I had a few tickets signed off and was told 93db, for commercial cars (trucks) is a bit higher.

27151. (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 27200). No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.
(b) For the purposes of exhaust systems installed on motor vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of less than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, a sound level of 95 dbA or less, when tested in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J1169 May 1998, complies with this section. Motor vehicle exhaust systems or parts thereof include, but are not limited to, nonoriginal exhaust equipment.

The law was changed so that cops can give you a ticket based on their own belief of how loud an exhaust should be.
# Exhaust systems which meet smog requirements but are still too loud. Exhaust equipment that states it is, "Legal in all 50 states," refers to smog, not noise.
# Note: New law (27150.2 VC) does not require law enforcement to use sound level meters to test for excessive noise. Citation is based on officer's judgment. Cited violators may have testing done at smog referee stations or may be directed by the court to have testing done. Vehicles in violation must be brought into compliance. A fine may also be imposed.

The legal noise limit for bikes is actually lower then for cars. The whole "loud pipes save lives" crap is such bullshit! Smart riders save lives, not loud pipes. The harley guys can get away with deafening pipes because cops think harleys are cool. Try putting a loud pipe on a sport bike, you will get a ticket in no time.

To the OP: You're best off rolling on a stock exhaust around here, sadly. :(
The harley guys can get away with deafening pipes because cops think harleys are cool. Try putting a loud pipe on a sport bike, you will get a ticket in no time. That's not true. I rode on my Yoshi exhaust for awhile and never got pulled over, my friend rides on his Two Brothers exhaust that's fugggin LOUD as hell. Sportbikes do get hassled more then cruisers, but most bikes in general don't get hassled because the dangers of pulling them over is greater then just letting them go (e.g. bike chase). Cruisers in general don't get pulled over because statistically wise they don't really cause much of a ruckus (compared to imports) and they're usually older guys. Same with muscle cars...
Face it guys, blame the ricers, fnf (for making it popular) and people that drive imports like idiots for ruining it, not cops.

Look the police profile against imports, be it bikes or cars. Profiling is wrong, PERIOD. You simply cannot justify to me pulling an import over for exhaust when there is an absolutely deafening harley right in front of it. Honestly it is not as bad in cali as everyone makes it sound though. Shit today I was driving my sil-80 all the way down to around autobacs and back with my spec2 and no silencer. I drove past like 3 CHP's and a couple of city cops without issues.

lol i agree!
some cops are dicks around from where i am, they are starting to get anal about the meets around where i am, they raided and block all exits and a lot of people got tickets, good thing i hardly go to that one anymore. i got freaked out when i was driving with my BC Spec II exhaust, scared to get pulled over etc, but eh, what can we do lol.

Yea I've never had problems running with a header, test pipe, and a 3" n1 exhaust on a KA a couple years ago. Only time I got hassled was when I was at a sketchy meet. Heck I still don't run into problems with just a 3" n1 exhaust on my ka daily driving to school.

Hence whenever I become 5.0. I'm pulling over every single domestic with an exhaust.:mrmeph:

IT's all the states attempts to raise money cause they are in a "crisis". (gay). So there are tons of proposals to raise "intake". Such as proposals to charge $10 to use the express lane on stretches of the 10 and 210. Charging $4/hour at parking meters and posting more no parking signs in place of 2hr posted parking around L.A. in order to make people use the meters.
A "crisis", you're kidding me right?
I've been pulled over fo rmy stock cat 2.25 pipes Blitz Nur Spec with silencer AND resonator so many time in my neighborhood, they've stopped pulling me over. A cop said to me "did you do anything to you're exhaust?","no, it's legal and reffed","oh, 'cause I swear it's louder this time",haha.
I go to get reffed, they ask "you legal?you been here before? Yes,Yes. OK, $15, 'sign paper', "you wanna check my exhaust?","no,there you go have a nice day". OK.
That's pretty much what you gotta get used to in L.A..

yes, you can goto any chp/police around town, it's best if you found the officer parked in the lot chilling.
Sometimes ask the source. I go here sometimes just to see the other side of the coin.

If its a fix it ticket it can no longer be swapped out then paid 10 dollars. Your going to have to get it checked then pay over 100 dollars ( non correctable ) I got one before around 1 - 2 months ago, I was talking with the head sherriff at the police station and he told me to get it signed off by a LEO ( law enforcement officer ) then tell a judge you had it replaced show her evidence and tell her youll never put one on blah blah then ask for a lower fine.
Police station charges - 10 dollars for sign off any deputy there will come out and check your exhaust
CHP - Free ( NEVER GO THERE, NEVER ! ) save up ten dollars and pay the police station. I went there and they wanted to write me 5 fix it tickets ALONE. They are extremely anal. If you have a modified car its a never situation, if its just exhaust go ahead.
feel free to pm on questions, I go into court in 5 days.
