I just got a 94 q45 front calipers, do you really need clips or anything with it to install into a s14? The calipers i got only included the bolts but nothing else.

the stock lines will work though you should thoroughly inspect them for small tears. use stock banjo bolt.

just in case... you need q45 rotors drilled to 4 lug. can't use the stock rotors.

You need the mounting brackets as well, I'm pretty sure.

You've been here how long?

Q45, J30, Z32 all directly bolt on.

SilviaSR20DET

what are the mounting brackets? I thought you can just bolt them into stock brake bracket?

No brackets needed. They go in the same spot the stock calipers were. Just need a new q45 rotor redrilled to 4 lug.

sweet i was about to go buy the brackets. thanks for the help

I think they mean the bracket that come with the caliper. Some rebuild units from Autozone or Kargen do not have the stock bracket. Without the stock bracket, you can't use the caliper.

So when you order, make sure they have the bracket.

SilviaSR20DET

wait a minute im kinda lost, so i cant just use the stock s14 bracket at all since the q45 caliper didnt come with one? Is it because the stock s14 bracket is too small in comparison to the q45's brackets?

They bolt right on. You don't need anything else. I just did this upgrade a couple weeks ago.

yes those are the brackets that are mentioned. they are actually part of the caliper, however, some people say you need the bracket, because auto parts store like kragen and autozone sell the remanufactured q45 brakes with only the top portion.

SilviaSR20DET
04-29-2008, 03:01 PM
oh so i have to get those brackets in order for the caliper to be bolted on? sorry im really noob with brakes and this is my first upgrade.

FRpilot
04-29-2008, 03:07 PM
yes. i think there are holes on the piece that you have, but they are positioned to be bolted onto the bracket. the bracket has the holes position to the spindle.

If you get the "Fully Loaded" calipers from the auto parts store they usually include the "brackets" to hold the pads in.

projectRDM
04-29-2008, 10:25 PM
FYI, calling shit by the right name will help a ton when you actually start looking for parts.

The 'brackets' you guys keep referring to are called pad carriers. On a typical sliding caliper they are indeed two separate pieces and most reman units will only include just the caliper, not the pad carrier. Mainly this is because when people buy a caliper, they're replacing an existing one, not upgrading to a different one. And no, the S14 pad carrier won't work. I can't believe anyone would even begin to think that, if the caliper is larger and the rotor is larger, how could you possibly use the same carrier?

And FYI, the J30 uses the same calipers/carriers. If you can't find one of those in a junkyard you live in a vacuum.

SilviaSR20DET

Found some pad carriers from one of the local junkyards. thanks for clearing that up.

Howdy, I just did the Q45 (2 pision front brakes) on my 95 s14 SE.

Since I have the 5 lugs. It's pretty much bolt on.

Summary:

On both s13 and s14:

You need:

1. Q45 calipers with all the vibration Shims (these are on over the mounting bolt holes and on the pads which prevents vibrations, thus no squeeks.) **brackets are the ones that holds the pads in place, located on the both ends of the calipers.
2. Q45 Rotors (which are 5 lugs)
3. Q45 Lines are Identical to our s14 and s13, so you can use your stock, or the Q45's. (I used the Q45's!)

1995+ SE s14 with 5 lugs is bolt on, but both the s14 and the Q45 caliper bolts are too long and you just need to use a thick washer to place on the head of the bolts. You would need to remove your stock dust backing plate because it's too small to fit the large Q rotors. (OR OR just Bend, or what we did was cut and slit the OEM backing plate in five places then just bent it back.

Summary:
1989+ s13 with 4 lugs.

Of course you must redrill the rotors to 4 lugs. Some people just place the oem rotors over the Q45 rotors and mark and dirll them with a power drill. OR go to a machine shop.
Using the s13 caliper bolts seemed to work. I haven't tried it, but it should be direct or with a Thick washer as stated with the s14.
I have no idea what "bracket" you guys are talking about. if you get the complete Q45 caliper with all the brake shims and the vibration shims...you're good.

MASTER brake CYLINDER UPGRADE:
You can run the front Q45 calipers with stock Master. Brake. Cylinder. but it's good to upgrade to the 300zx or Q45's M.B.C.

J30:

1995+ J30's should do the trick. (But J30'S ARE NOT WORTH THE UPGRADE, IMO)

Got them installed and so far they are a very nice upgrade, brake fade resistance is dramatically improved and also no lock up in the rain even with bald tires when i stomp on it. Its probably cause i need to adjust the brake booster to engage it a little earlier.

im so confused now i thought j30 are the same as q45(rotors and calipers) and would bolt up perfectly(no need for spacers on bolts. un shure though please shimmy in on this also) perfectly for this upgrade just needed shims and brackets wich is why ppl are always getting confused on what they need because they didnt get it with the calipers,
will help alot with all this dam confusion

I'm just curious to know, if you need to change (upgrade) the brake master cylinder when you perform any of these brake upgrades (Q45, Z32 & J30)?

no you dont... but many brake guys will suggest that you do in order to do the swap correctly but i have been running my j30 calipers with my stock s13 bmc and have had no problems...

also when doing the swap be sure to put the correct calipers on the correct side =P because when i did my switch i totally forgot to check the side and just bolted them up and had no pressure :Ownedd: but when i switched them to the other sides i got pressure back again... good luck with the swap

The only brake upgrade where you would really want to upgrade the master cylinder is the Z32, and really only when you do front and rear.

For the J30, Q45, and 180sx/Maxima upgrade the stock master cylinder, lines, and rear brakes are fine.

can you just bolt the calipers up using the stock 240 brackets and shims.
are j30/q45 same rotors and claipers and both bolt up exactly the same???

Think about it. In fact, go back and read this thread. How would a larger caliper bolt up to a smaller pad carrier? Whatever caliper you use must use the matching pad carrier.

Secondly, J30, Q45, Z32 calipers all bolt to the S chassis. That's also written in this thread.

180sxdrifter

is the q45 rear also bolt on to the s13?

BigVinnie
07-25-2008, 09:57 PM
just in case... you need q45 rotors drilled to 4 lug. can't use the stock rotors.

You don't always have to drill for 4 lug rotors. If you want new cheap rotors the altima rotors work as well but I believe that rotor thickness is at 26mm not the 28 mm that the J30 and q45 rotors come in....

Secondly, J30, Q45, Z32 calipers all bolt to the S chassis. That's also written in this thread.

All those calipers are designed for the macpherson strut suspension. Pretty much any car with a macpherson design made by NISSAN/INFINTI will work, because it is the position of the caliper placement to the rotor....
Even newer G35/350z calipers and including Skyline calipers (R31/R32) work because they are all MACpherson by design...
It's easy on Nissans production cost. Sorry I felt I had to elaborate from your answer.
