Well, I personally like Meguiars, but just go to advanced auto or something; they have lots of soaps there to choose from.
I just use straight water with a microfiber towel making sure that the panel i'm wiping is wet at all times. No swirls or anything. I did a side by side comparison on my S14 with soap and my black Lexus without soap, the S14 ended up having WAY more swirl marks in the paint.

Meguiars Hyper Wash. It has something like a 400:1 dilution ratio and you can get it in a 5gal deal IIRC.

Brian, you were not supposed to be washing your car in your driveway in most of NC until like 2-3 weeks ago, most counties of the state were on mandatory water restrictions because of the months-long drought.

Heh, that statement was if I had a driveway. I live in an apartment and can't wash my car here anyway.

Get either Meguiars or Mothers from Target (cheaper).
Also invest in a mitt, chamois, and those water blade things. Wash the car around 9-10 am in the morning to help it dry better. And put a coat of wax(not spray), try to not polish the car, instead clay bar it.

just a helpful hint...if you have stains on your car (greasey oil watever leftovers from an engine swapp) use armor all wheel cleaner on it. it doesn't damage the paint and it removes stains like crazy. i love this shit..then use Nu waxx or whatever and bam paint is like new hahah

just in case someone takes the sarcasm seriously -
dish washing / laundry soaps strip the protecting layers of wax on the paint. they also do a number on your plastic/vinyl/rubber trim by drying them out which leads to permanent discoloration/staining/cracking/shrinking (over time).
there are more products out there other than meguiars/mothers/turtle wax aka anything from a major auto parts chain.
i used to religiously use meguiars until i found products out there that were better. just a tip...
also keep in mind, that most pro detailing car wash soaps are meant NOT to sud.
suds dont let the particles of dirt rinse away as easily as a wash that doesnt sud. the dirt gets caught in the bubbles and what not, hence the increased chance of swirling.
if you want, PM me

C'mon, don't offer a half-ass answer.
His question also spoke to affordability.
In my opinion/experience, the best off-the-shelf is Meguiars, and WOW, that answers his question as well, how convenient is that?
What you did was spoke to some self-inflating ode to yourself, but still decided that instead of just posting it, you would like for everyone to tell you how great you are by requesting that they PM you.
Why not post it right out here? I mean "affordable" is subjective.

Not to mention dish soap eats away at your clear coat once the wax is gone. I for one would rather pay xtra for car soap than new clear coat, that and I don't want to wax my car everytime I wash it

Considering one is independent of the other, why would you clay bar instead of polishing? And what's wrong with polishing?

Its funny b/c I used to be the guy that bought into that too. Then I got sick of spending $100 on waxes and soaps and went back to the regular stuff. I see no difference (except in clay bars - cheap ones really don't do anything). Maguires and all that stuff is fine.

yes, off the shelf best product is gold class. i like it better than the nxt car wash.
as for prosumer products, i have almost all of Prima's product line as well as some Ultima products.
Prima carwash vs Ultima carwash = Ultima wins
Maguire's gold is really good.

All I know is we have these things in the AF called "vehicle roll bys", where high ranking ppl come and inspect your shops trucks. We have been using turtle wax paste wax on our early '00s ranger. I decided to try out the gold class on it last week, and I'll be damned if I didn't get like 1000 compliments on how shiny the paint looked on it.

go to the carwash!!
This man speaks the truth. The carwash is there for your convenience and I think you should all make the most of it.
/sarcasm
Anyways, I'm currently using Eagle 1. I've used Meguiars and Turtle Wax before as well. They all got the job done. Eagle 1 is certainly an improvement over the last stuff I used though. Some orange smelling one that I can't remember the name of. That shit was garbage.

I work at a carwash as a supervisor and let me tell you, most carwashes do not do anything or have any special products that you cannot get yourself. I wash my own car a lot better than what most generic carwashes can do.
I personally like meguiars products. We use blue coral soaps and wax's at our carwash and I think meguiars has a better quality product.
If your looking to just wash the outside your car all you need is
1. good clean water (no well water like some people have if they live in the middle of nowhere)
2. Microfiber towels. Try to get them slightly damp before using them because very dry towels have a higher chance to catch stuff in it and can scratch
3. A good soap such as meguiars (detailer brand) hyper wash or shampoo plus
I can go on and on about detailing etc. But for now what I listed above is all you really need to just wash you car.

that is the worst advice you can give washing a car with no lubricant....
I just use straight water with a microfiber towel making sure that the panel i'm wiping is wet at all times. No swirls or anything. I did a side by side comparison on my S14 with soap and my black Lexus without soap, the S14 ended up having WAY more swirl marks in the paint.
