Okay, so I do a long drive every couple of weeks. There are no cops (well, very few) and I typically do around 95 for about an hour and a half. I don't remember exactly, but I think it puts my DOHC at around 4,000rpm in 5th. Cooling is fine as well.

The car doesn't seem to have a problem, and I just increase pressure on the gas and it just pulls and pulls (till the speed limiter ).

Does anyone think this is too hard or too abusive?
And while we are at it, would ocassionally shifting at like 5,000rpms be too hard on the car?

Thats a bit quicker than I'd drive often, but it'll be fine...just wear out your car a bit quicker, I usually won't cruse over 3500rpm...i think thats around 85 or so in 5th. I love big highways with high limits.

Umm, I do that daily. If your shifting before 4,500, your just not having any fun. There's a revlimiter...if you take that off and rev past where it used to be, yeah you can break stuff but you can rev till you hit it and you'll be fine.

Change oil (and filter) religiously and the car will be fine.

BTW, for normal driving I shift between 2.5k-3.5k

Yeah....I second that about monitoring the oil. I drove like 85mph for like 8 hours straight (minus stops for food and gas)...and I checked my oil soon afterwards....and it was VERRRRY low. I drive about 80mph for 20 miles....to and from work....and I seem to be about a quart low every month and a half......then again...I also have like 150,000 miles or so...but it still runs strong.

I keep up on maintenance like a religion. Oil and filter every 3k, fuel filters at 15k, etc...
My tranny fluid kindda old. Need to change that.

I check oil before I do my long trip when I fill up, but I don't stop till the trip is over. The car has 156,000miles and runs very very good.

I think I'll start keeping the cruising at 80mph, with my short 95-100 mph bursts down to 15 minutes every so often. When I get a good CD in, I think I am doing 85, but I look down and I am hitting the speed limiter! damn thing jumps outta nowhere

During my high speed drives I noticed the tranny on the 240 regardless whethers its AT/MT gets very hot inside. My auto tranny was gone after 10 mins at 130ish. MT held up a little better. I also noticed increased blow by in the oil, maybe the rings were going out from the high rpm/speed driving.

hmmmm I have always wondered this also. Is it really something that will tear the living shit outta my engine...I know that it will eat up much more gas, but will it really be THAT destructive on my engine which already has 130k miles on it?

I try to keep myself to shifting before 4000 RPM during daily driving, but it doesn't usually work. I rev up to 4500 or 5000 all the time, just don't do it so much when the engine is cold because you need to give the oil some time to circulate. My S14 has over 140,000 miles and still runs very strong, and I have no problem with driving at 85-95 from the Bay Area to LA with stops only for gas, no temp probs or oil.

Higher rpm will wear the engine faster, but if you take care of it, it's not an instant death blow. My car has over 181K miles on it...it sees 85 everytime it goes on the highway, been through 3 track days, and is autox'ed once (sometimes twice) a month. Still running strong. No smoke, doesn't burn oil, just a little chain rattle...everything's fine. I change the oil religiously every 3k miles...so did the previous owner, who put the first 120K on it.
