View Full Version : What's the quickest way to switch wheels if you have sideskirts?

Matej
04-24-2008, 05:24 PM
Hahaha what an embarrassing question, but how do all of you who have sideskirts switch wheels at drift days?

Do you actually take the time to remove the skirts, jack up the car, mount new wheels, lower car, and put the skirts back on?
That's what I do but I'm curious if there's an easier way that doesn't involve removing the skirts.

I know some people drive the rear up on ramps and jack it up by the diff, but I don't think I could fit ramps or a jack under the rear bumper.

Basically I'm just trying to get an idea of what others do, if it has to be the "hard" way then so be it, but if there's some kind of trick then please tell me.

And no, drifting without sideskirts is not an option! Haha.

Matej, don't worry. I'll be at the drift events I'll simply pick the car up while you change the wheelz. DUH! (Good question imo)

Take two 2x4's. Place under rear wheels. Drive up onto 2x4's.

Jack from the diff and OBVIOUSLY use jack stands.
Fast, simple, cheap.

yeah or if you want to be hardcore like me, for the rear just jack from your tow hook on the passenger side. or buy a very low pro jack, i use both methods

Drive on uneven slopes to lift a wheel. haha.

I just use wooden planks that are like 5 inch wide and about 2 inches high.

The ramp is about 5 feet long and I have another one that I nailed on top of it that's about 1 and 1/2 feet long.

Then I make an angle at both ends and that's how I drive up on it to get enough space to jack up the car.

I jack up the diff on the rear side and in the front I jack it up at the subframe thing behind the oil pan.

Or you could just jack it up from the tow hooks.

Someone posted a very good idea.

if you have two jacks, You can raise the car slightly by jacking up the tow hook. At which point you can then slide a second jack under the diff and proceed to jack the car up safely.

Or............

You can save yourself the trouble of bringing three jacks with you and just drive your car up on the ramps. Then jack it up from the bottom.

Geez people I believe with close to 20 events I've got this figured out.

mastah~

Smart. I used to use stock jack to lift side up then use a real(?) jack to lift car, but I think I'll just bring some 2x4's!

rofl.

nobody uses jackstands to change wheels.

I don't even use them changing wheels on the trailer.

you're not going under the car.

you aren't gonna die if you don't absolutely suck at cars.

use the tow hook on the rear bumper. its easy to get a jack that far under.

shit i wold use those jacks on a daily driven/ track car. so its 300 something for each? so about 1200 gets you the ability to not have to worry about this shit ever?

so can you ingage these like speed racer and jump over shit? :D

Or regular jack right behind/underish the rear bumper on the support.

A little bit more expensive than 2x4s but works great! Lightweight, too.

thats weird i just find it easier and quicker to just snip 3 zip ties from sideskirt near rear wheel on driver side and slide squirt out so jack clears, then just slide low pro jack and jack up from rear subframe bolt. from there i can get both rear tires off the ground quick then i could by having to get out of car and set up blocks, get back in drive and drive on black, get out of car and tray to get jack under diff.

i use a scissor jack/stock jack.

slide between wheel and side skirt and slip it behind the side skirt to the pinch weld or sub frame bolt.

whatever.

takes like 2-3 minutes to change a wheel if you have coilovers, even in the rear.

I don't see why anyone wouldnt have at least a plank of wood with them at an event..

Yeah I bought 3 pieces of 1x6 wood planks from Home Depot, got home, sawed 1 of them in half, then nailed each half to 1 of the full planks.

Raises the car 2 inches and don't have to take the front bumper off.

I might have to add a few more to it, so it acts like a total ramp system for the front and rear of the car, for those annoying days like maintenance day where you have to crawl under the car to change tranny or diff fluids.

In that case, all you'd have to do is make the ramp long enough so that after the front wheels go up the ramp, it will level off a little bit before the rear gets on, so when the rear gets on, you can have the car go up another few inches, that way you can get a jack underneath the front and the rear easily.

Plus it's something to do... when you're bored.

Ian

get a good jack that doesn't have to move far to go up

get a 2x4 that's like 5" long...cut in half at a 45* angle so you make little ramp things

put them behind rear wheels and reverse up them

then jack from diff

Find a stock honda civic jack at a yard and shove it under your car and manually turn it with a small screw driver till its high enough to get a jack under. Now your not carrying wood or anything. Just a small 1" by 12" jack and your main jack. Or build some cheap wood ramps-

McRussellPants

K Sport Jacks are like 450$ per MSRP.

upshot is you only need one if you just want to do the back of the car and have coilovers.

i just slide my jack under the diff and jack it up. since my car has such gay ride height :keke: theres no need to put anything unter the wheels or to jack it up somewhere else. at least in the rear. front is a little more difficult, i use a scissor jack first and then slide my other jack under the car and pump it up.

Hold up... Weren't you the one who was flaming the bathroom scales as a way to corner balance a car? You know....the system thats a whopping 10 or 15lbs off....

Although you may never notice 30lbs (IF thats what it weighs), ita the COMBINATION of 30lbs here and 30lbs there just to look cool that will kill you. That system has no functional advantage whatsoever. You still need a jack for the front of the car...that same jack can be used on the rear of the car, making this system useless. Well, except to say "look at me!!!"

I'm starting to notice you just like to argue. Why don't you tell me, WHY IS THIS BENEFICIAL to a 240?

Again, cool idea but basically a useless mod.

I understand this isn't so fresh, if you suck at driving and all you do is go to track events and eat front tires plowing around.

But you have to understand that jack would be really effective for drifting if you were motivated enough to make it.

to get to front suspension:

1. place 2, 2x4's on top of each other, with enough room between the first and second 2x4's so that the wheel can "step up"

2. place wooden block on jack and lift from lower sill/pinchweld area behind front wheel. jacking up one side will lift the opposite front wheel if you are low enough.

3. place jackstand on opposite side pinchweld.

to get to rear:

drive up onto 2 stacked 2x4's and jack from diff.

easy as pie.

fuck fancy ramps.
