usually youd have to be certified
degrees are preferred too.
and u need a work visa
i THINK
thats how it is in most places
unless u work 'under the table' payments and stuff.

wait, so have you or have you not found a job yet? Cost of living in Japan, esp Tokyo is expensive, and it doesn't help at all the the value of the dollar is so low now.
If you've already found something or if you're just having a vacation, great. If not, you may want to reconsider this.

My cousin teaches English in Japan, has been for several years now, and he had to wait several months for his first visa, and for subsequent renewals (which will change and be easier now that he's marrying a Japanese citizen). I agree with some of the posters above, you may want to plan further ahead with this.
I MAY be going to live there with my cousin for a few months next year, and I've already started planning and getting a visa in line.
Good luck.

Do it.
Do it while your young.
Good for you to want to do this.
Not many people are willing to step out of their bubble and jump into the unknown. It's a scary thing at first but well worth the experience.

how would they learn anything if you couldn't speak japanese
if you can "teach" english without knowing japanese, i'll do it
i'll just stand at the front of the class and read rap lyrics all day

Allot of teachers JET & NOVA can not speak fluent Japanese. Iv'e seen people who teach that can't speak any.(random people non jet/nova) As I'm told its not required because they want you to teach English not Japansese. Most of the JET/NOVA couple Ive run across speak a lil because they need to get by after work. Good luck but they said and it has been posted its not good as it seems.
Obviously the OP have a passport but I tried to buy my wife a ticket last week and the lady was telling me they aren't allowed to sell two way tickets (passa certain# days ) without a VISA.(800/1200 rd trp) There are a couple of website in English that will help you I can only remember one but its a start. Most bigger cities have similar sites.
