View Full Version : O2 ext rubbing streering colum

I recently put my turbo O2 extension on and its slightly rubbing the steering column, sending great vibrations from the engine to the steering wheel and makes it a bit stiff to turn the wheel.
Now I do have factory worn out motor mounts, I'm wondering if the sag in the old mounts would allow this and would the O2 ext still touch the column if I replaced the mounts.
Ha anyone had the same issue?

many people have a problem with aftermarket turbo elbows in usdm swapped cars because most are designed for jdm/rhd vehicles. most people just hammer away at the side to give it just a little more clearance. other than that, new motor mounts may help as well.

see the one I have is the Megan Racing one. It didn't hit on my friends car but it hits one mine, so I'm assuming its because of the slack thats in the motor mounts.

i have had egay....they hit...both mine...which was an early design...and my buddies....an hks copy.....both hit....i now have Greddy...fits like it was ment to be there....but only with stock manifold...i tried to use it with egay manifold and i couldnt even install...so i just used stock manifold....i could have clocked the exhaust housing a little but the bolt are seized......

+1
GReddy is one of the ones that DON'T rub on LHD cars.

HKS hits like a mother. i had to beat the shit out of the wastegate pipe to get it to fit. not good, power loss and boost spike for the loss.
friend has greddy, fits great.
i found the best and fastest way to "dent" the HKS was a 3# sledge and a couple hours of shaping. gl, i know how bad it sucks. fitting it up and taking it off with the motor in the car several times sucks. just don't bolt it down until the flange sits flat against the turbo housing. it has to rub a LOT to interfere with turning so a little rubbage you won't notice.

Yeah, I think I might have it cut and re weld a curved piece of aluminum in so that it has just enough clearance for the column.
Thats another thing I forgot to mention, is that I have an exhaust manifold on the car as well.

shouldn't be aluminum...O.o
stainless? i thought about doing that but i'm just going to get a different DP/elbow.
the mani shouldn't make THAT much difference. i've got solid motor mounts and HKS manifold. i didn't notice that much difference in placement of the motor. the turbo should not move, since the aftermarket manifolds are intended to be used with the turbos/hardlines on the motor that don't like to move.

Wonder if the fact that my motor mounts are worn out are allowing it to hit

Yeah some of the eBay Manifolds move the turbo around cause their QC in the flange alignment is poor.
The separate dump tube outlets seem to have the worst time fitting.
If you are using the stock KA mounts I would dump them for some Nismo Motor and Tranny mounts first then resort to hammering.

Pretty much if something doesn't fit, make it fit.
