I know that this question has been asked before but I feel it really never got the full attention it should have. What needs to be done to make the motor smog legal in California. I know alot of people say that its useless in trying, but just for the hell of it what do you think needs to be done?

EPA/CARB certification testing performed by an accredited facility. I believe the going rate is about $10,000.

Why of course.. You need to wave a magic wand over it and *Poof* turn it into a KA24.

Or of course you could stack as many cats as you can back there and hope that your smog is clean enough... Or just bribe the guy at the emissions place.

well we all know that we can do that, but what about making the car legal in the sense that motorex does with ther skylines.. would we still be looking at the $10,000 to get it done? There has to be a way to get it legal and do it for cheap. The reason I am asking is because, god forbid i do have to take the car into a state run smog, i don't want to get screwed.

Even if you pass smog, you won't pass visual.

Trust me, the expense that Motorex went through is far above $10,000. More like $100,000. You are basically doing the work of an auto manufacturer by paying the US/CA government to test and certify an engine for use here for EVERYONE. There is no such thing as a single case exception.

If you're doing an SR swap in CA, you're doing it illegally, plain and simple. Deal with it however you want to. Right now, your method of choice appears to be denial.

Just register the car in Arizona or Nevada and then you have a legal SR swap.

Hey ruf that came off a little harsh. I understand that the Sr swap is illegal, I just was inquiring about ways to making it legal. Currently there is one way that I do know of that alows me to have a Sr with out worrying about smog. From what I recall Lake County, which is the county clear lake is in does not require your car to be smogged, f the car is registered in that county. So as long as the car is registered from lake county it doesn't have to be smog. I might be wrong about this. The reason that I brought this up is because i wanted to know if there were any other ways to get around smog.

denial is something i don't do, i am trying to cover my ass in case i ever have to go to a state governed smog test.

The sr shouldn't have problems passing the smog test. Japan has stricter laws than America about emissions. It's the simple fact that it's not epa / carb approved engine because it was never produced in America (the rwd turbo version). Now, if we were to start a fundraiser to get the testing done, I think we could get a lot of backing from both 240 owners, and some magazines...they seem to be bringing so much attention, why shouldn't they help to do something good... ? I know I would throw some cash towards legalizing process...maybe we could start something here?

tyler i totally agree with you on that. We should look into how we could go about doing something like that. I think i might call the epa/carb to check out the possiblity of doing this. I wouldn't mind throwing down some money, so that in the long run we don't get screwed because of a motor.

Okay, this is a stupid question, but what does visuals mean. Like them standin there lookin at your exaust and seeing how much is comin out?

visual emissions inspection. They check for the presence and function of emissions control devices, and check the engine to make sure it hasn't been modified in a way that could increase emissions.

If you're going to register a car out of state....of course you'd need an adress in THAT state or area to even qualify.

In addition to the EPA and CARB wouldn't you need the motor also blessed by the DOT? I am prety sure everything that rolls on Federaly owned highways is subject to DOT regulations.

hmmm... maybe, but I think they're concerned more with safety than anything else. Either way, the testing can probably be done for any governing body in one shot. Have the tests done, then report the results to anyone that needs it for approval.

It is true that a properly done sr20det swap will pass California smog testing. I've done it, but it will not pass the visual test unless you connect an EGR(which you would have to fabricate), make sure you have a charcol canister connected, and all other emissions equipment that California requires. Plus you would have to convince the person doing the inspection that it was the stock engine from Nissan or you'll need EPA & CARB exemptions. This was my dilema with my Sentra SE with a Bluebird sr20det. I did the swap in Utah and got it registered easily, but here in Cali I'd have to pay about $500 to have someone close their eyes on the visual and also risk having to go to a state inspection facility in the future. I don't feel comfortable being that dishonest so I sold my Sentra(back in Utah) and I bought my 240sx.

ONCE AGAIN, The SR20DET JDM engine is not legal in any state!!!! Some states chose to not check for Illegal engines, but that doesn't make it legal. To make it legal it need Federal and state testing for emission and proper kit make up and 10K is on the cheep side. several of us have check into it and the price is too high for one shop to complete the testing if everyone else get a FREE pass. MotorX Skyline prices for there conversion include recovering there expenses for testing..

Just get a hook up, its as easy as that, go to a station that does inspections, and where the guys seem pretty chill, explain your postion and ask if they will help you out, if he says no then just try somewhere else. My car is going for the sr swap tomorrow (friday), sat or Mon, depends when my tow truck guy can make it. Everyone should ekep an eye out for the pics when the car comes back, and the pics of my new s14 seats....
