ok so i have a nismo 1.5 way lsd. my car is pretty low as well, so when im going up a drive way i always get kind of stuck..when i go up into a drive way at an angle i notice that one wheel is spinning but the other one ( the one that is compressed?) is not. is this normal? i understand that the one side is stuck b/c of the wieght pushing on that one side but shouldn't it still lock? i also use redline snythetic, but i see some people using non synthetic...would using a synthetic mess up a diff that uses non synthetic...im confused :-/ ..any help would be appreciated. :hs:

Good question.
I just installed a Kaaz 1.5 way lsd in my track car this week. Chris at Kaaz told us to use a non synthetic for the break in process. Which is just about 30 minutes in a figure 8. But i have to check and see if the Kaaz oil that came with the lsd is a non synthetic.

One side only spins because your car is tilted. Try pulling your e-brake up while progressively dropping it while pulling forward slowly. That seems to work with me whenever I get stuck. What that does it forces both sides to lock up.
As far as what oil to use, I always use Motul 90PA Mineral Oil. It seems to work really well on all the clutch type diffs I have ever used. That along with BS LSII additive which quites down the clunking abit.

Was gonna say the same thing that Ray said. Try the ebrake trick. Works every time for me.
I run a tomei, but Kaaz rebuilds tomei diffs, and they told me to not use a synthetic oil. I usually use a conventional gear oil of choice and put a bottle of the Ford Friction Modifier in there. Makes all the clunking noises go away.

Thanks for the input, but why don't they both spin. isn't that how a helical would work? I'm confused..

The breakaway torque of the diff is too low to allow you to one wheel it up that incline.
I think.

mmm ic, so maybe if i had something harder locking lock a kaaz it would have been different?

youre right, helical lsds work like open diffs when there is no force applied to one wheel.
i agree with murda on the breakaway torque. may be able to set it?

i dunno about other diffs, but ever since i had this diff, it hasn't made a peep. it's quiet as hell, but i heard that nismo diff's are pretty quiet. i woudln't even know it was there. would i be able to set the breakaway torque? i want it to lock harder :/ . noticed that when i put it on the lift and spin one of the wheels, there is a little bit of "play" before the other one turns. very tiny but still...does that have something to do with breakaway torque?

my kaaz 2 way is quiet as well......... for the most part. when i'm going up my driveway at a sharp angle one wheel will catch more than the other, because of the direction and weight, yes. both tires are spinning at the same time. its just the turn basically.
read the instructions, and make sure you use the correct oil.

well i bought this used.. but when i tried to gas it more, only one tire was spinning cause it to smoke, and i was just looking at the one wheel not moving at all. maybe i got sold a vlsd? :(

My buddy had the same problem before he installed his lsd, after he istalled he can get up any driveway. Your lsd should not be spinning only one tire... If your not mechanical inclined, have it checked out... Sounds like you have open diff?

who did you buy it from?
what proof do you have/did he give you that its a 1.5 nismo?
could be a number of things.....
maybe you got ripped off?
maybe the lsd is done?
etc.....

i used this diff at a drift clinic, so i know it works. it's definetly not an open diff. i bought this from a guy on nico a while back. i guess the only way to tell for sure is to open the pumpkin up...it may need a rebuild..or maybe i should try using a non synthetic oil.
