I just picked one up for a multitude of reasons...main ones being I'm gonna need it soon and I'm bored.

Anybody else here got a ped?

Man, I want one... do you have to take a safety course to ride one?

Also, by moped you mean the faggio things right?

tell you the truth, i've never checked into it. i normally ride mine on the weekends. locally, if i'm bored. i drive by police ALL the time...... they dont even look at me.

friend of mine told me as long as you have a valid drivers license (class D). not sure if thats correct though.

no license needed. just 45 bucks a day including rental and insurance.

i believe in some, -maybe a lot- of the states there is a limit on cc's before you need to have an m class notification on your license...ill check into it for my area now that i think about it, because there is a nice scooter shop here. how is your scooter when it comes to going up hills op?

Cool, I'll check em out. Thats not a bad price at all.

I have to take the freeway to work... do these things do 70mph? I could probably take the toll road if they don't, would still be cheaper than gas for my car I'd bet...

Like mentioned above each state is different I remember as a kid riding a moped under 15 and it was legit. (no tag no license). Iv'e only seen/known one person to get stopped by the man on a moped. You really gotta be fucking up!(haha) My friend got his 2nd DUI on a Moped thus sending him upstate(prison).

I'm sure it will kill the MPG but they have a ton of aftermarket parts to increase torque/hp.

thats the one! its like that here in ab-aba-abalama

the question remains, how are these things on the uphill? would it be better to get off and push? im not too current on the torque ratings of these freeway beasts

If I worked in the city I live in, I would have gotten one a LONG time ago.

ive gone thru at least 10 mopeds while i was living in beijing. I would go to the local village and offer a local villager $20 for their used moped. they were so cheap that my friends and i would go moped searching around the villages after school, pick up a moped for the day to ride/offroad, and at the end of the day, light them on fire and roll them off a cliff and sit back to watch them explode.

there was a scooter/moped thread already posted not too long ago on OT.

but yeah in california, to ride legally on the street, your scooter needs to be registered and insured, and i believe 50cc or larger.

if your getting a moped and dont have the balls to get the class m1 license, you can alwasys renew your m1 permit over and over.

96Turbo
04-20-2008, 09:36 PM
most states allow any 2 wheeled street legal machine under 49cc to be ridden with just a driver's license. I got my "motorized bicycle license" when i was 15. This legally allows 15 year olds to cruise around on mopeds and it was the best summer of my life lol. I personally think mopeds are the shit. I've got a '03 Yamaha Zuma.

Of course everything i own with an engine never remains stock. I went with the 70cc aluminum big bore cylinder, 21mm carb, high flow filter, fiberglass reed valves, upgraded variator (automatic shifter pulley system thing that peds and snowmobiles use.

Combined a lightweight frame that you can flick into a corner full lean in like .001 sec with a nasty ass 2 stroke engine and you've got way too much fun. It sounds ridiculous, has a wicked 2 stroke powerband, tops out at like 60mph, and i can ride wheelies on it. everyone do themselves a favor and get a stock or modified scooter. you'll save a ton of gas money and/or have fun (notice i said and/or cuz the gas mileage goes to shit when you start modding). Shit is still like 40mpg though, and i could probably go a little leaner...i'm just scared to (already melted 1 piston---due to shitty mixture)

damn, i knew that joke was coming. i was surprised to see it took that long though. you can't knock fat chicks until you've tried one, the same can be said about fast mopeds. lol

I don't have a moped, but I ride a Ruckus, which is close enough.

I rode that bitch over 100 miles on Saturday, it was fun.

modified mopeds/scoots are cool. I don't really see why they're popular in CA though, if you're going to go to the trouble of a motorcycle license, just buy a motorcycle. Build a CB750 cafe.

I have a minimally modded moped...it's kinda ghetto rigged but that's part of owning a moped haha

I'll post pics after I go to the shop today to blast up some parts and put them back on...

You should get a mean looking leather jacket, a really vicious looking helmet and grow a really long beard. You'll look like a biker!!!! sort of.

As for the mpg thing goes, that's why I'm on a diet.

I'm seeing so many more now then I ever have before. No doubt the gas prices are the reason.

I've been considering one lately and I've always been super anti-faggio. But whatever, gas is cheap, and if you put a helmet on no one will know.

I've also been contemplating a smaller Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, motorcycle.

Ian

PS

In VA you don't even need a driver's license to ride a moped (sub 50cc vehicle)...I thought most places were like that

Fuck pedal start...mines a kick start...man style

I hate the way pedals look on a ped anyways....mine's like completely naked...no front fender, fairings, turn signals etc...just headlight, tail light...maybe i'll add an oil cooler

stuff on order

-Primo pegs for foot pegs going on rear axle bolts
-Cafe bars for a CBR350, going to mod to fit

I will get a motorcycle LONG before i stoop to getting a moped. at least no one assumes you don't like women if you ride a motorcycle.
For me it's between a motorcycle or a Sentra that gets around 40MPG. but seeing as it rains about 3/4 the year around here, i am leaning twards the sentra.

Ian
04-22-2008, 04:15 PM
I mean...I paid $275 for this thing...

Sentras are like a couple thousand.

And I don't need a special license.

Awesome find man! I live in Richmond City so it's very cost efficient to own one, 70+mpg. Mine is a 150cc moped. I just bought a 650cc Suzuki cruiser motorcycle though...soooo i'm kinda doing the transition to the bigger displacement :).

But good luck man!

Not as bad ass looking as yours but it's going through a restoration. No more dorky options either. IE; - saddle bags, luggage/pizza rack, windscreen and rear view mirror.
It's getting a fresh orange paint though woot!

You dont need a drivers license to ride one of those in Indiana either, you only have to be 15 years old. I have a modded Honda Elite S, I put a 70cc motor in it, jetted the carb, R1 exhaust, that thing goes. Havent ridden it in a year, I was gonna ride it on Earth Day but I couldn't find the keys.

Yep, if they are under 50cc they are licensed by each individual town. I think I paid $10 for the license plate, its issued at the police station. I know the town over from me has free moped/scooter registration. All you need is a state I.D. and you're good to go. It was sweet to have my own motorized transportation when i was 15, it was the first vehicle I sank all my money into.

hell yea i'm in the exact same boat....cept for i had to pay a lot more and jump through a lot more hoops to become legal. But it was so worth it. Me and my best friend both had mopeds. having that freedom when ur 15 opens up so many possibilities.....for me it was pretty much what got me started smoking bud.....great times lol

LOL, I don't think it's that bad, unless your ped is significantly less stable than my Ruckus. My bike tops out at 45mph and I'm contemplating a 150cc Grand Axis swap that should put it up to maybe 55-60mph.

Ryguy: The Elite sounds quick. I know that the Elite 80 will do 60mph off the showroom floor, they're great scoots.

You can't get them new anymore, although dealers might still have some new old stock. I think that 05 or 06 was the last year they got imported.

Tons of them available used though, they're neat bikes.

They have essentially zero aftermarket however, so if you're going to want to do a bunch of stuff to it you might want to stick to a LR (little ruckus).

Rode the Ruckus in to work for the first time today, finally nice enough out here to do that.

I covered about 25 miles in heavy traffic in less than an hour, which is probably better than I could've managed by car.

Plus, jumping curbs and running on the sidewalk is infinitely more gratifying than simple lane splitting. I swear one of these days I'm going to get brazen and just ride the thing into a store with automatic doors, lol.
