View Full Version : Cavalier guy

Ok so while I was at school today this guy came up to me and said that he thought my car wasnt worth a damn, so I just said whatever and kept walking. Later on in the day he comes up to me and tells me he wants to race me. I said okay and we set it up.

Now this guy has a 96 Cavalier base model with no mods, and I have my beloved 91 240 with only a custom exhaust and suspension mods.

I have never raced my car so I have no idea what the cars potential is. Do I have a shot with this guy or what? My guess is that I do, but I'm not for sure.

I just... I just can't understand the mentality of this guy.

It's one thing to buy a cheap car and want to go fast - that's what we all do, in a way.

But, to buy the cheapest, bottom of the barrel piece of crap, such as a base model Cavalier, then challenge people to races...

Now, I hate street racing. Yes, I'm one of THOSE people. Tell him to take it to the track. You can both go on "grudge night". Nothing really pounds home the shame of losing a race more than pulling up to the timing tower and grabbing that laughable 17 second timeslip (him, not you; a '91 240SX should be solidly in the 15s).

either he is clueless that his car sucks or he has a trick up his sleeve. i've been wooped by a sunfire GT with nitrous. it's ok though, he beat a semi fixed up mustang right after me. if you race him be careful out there. don't race on a road with other people around.

If it was a 96 z24 i would probably say it would be a race to watch because i have a friend with a 96 Z24 who ran a 15.56 1/4 mi.... but since its not i don't see why you wouldn't loose except ofcourse if whateverjames says is true "trick up his sleeve."

This isn't going to be a street race is it? You are going to be at a track right?

what happened to the bricktop name :/ and yeah nitrous roxx0rs. i think im gonna buymy friend's grandmas 1987 sentra hb, and put a smallblock in the backseat/hatch area.. ofcourse a ford9" to.. would that be awesome? and leave the sentra drivtrain up front as is, then when i wanted to get mad power, put the front drivetrain in neutral, and turn on the smallblock (would have to keep it running for electronics, PB, PS, etc.) then i could turn the smallblock off, and just use the Front drivtrain for excellent gas mileage.. any thoughts.. oh yeah, this ties in by having a 'stock' econo car, but it being mad fast as well.

haha, this reminds me of the time a zx2 atmy skoo called me out. he told me he beat a bunch of GSRs and Si.

at the time, he didnt tell me wat his car was, he was keepin it a secret. hez all "man i beat GSRs left and right, Sis are nothing, my car got balls! dont worry about it"

i walk out to the parking lot iwth him, saw it was a zx2. i asked him wat he has, he said "full ehxuast intake and header" and i said koo koo. he called out some of my non racer friends too. he raced one of my black friend with a old skoo firebird [hez not a racer, a bball player] and burned him. then he wanted to race my mexi friend ith a stratus but they never went. so i went to race him. blew him off the line and kept him behind where, where it sucks to see taillights.

as for the cavalier, dont worry about him, its juss funny he asked you that

it seems that more and more people are simply getting into cars to street race and show off, not getting into cars because they are actually interested in tuning/building a car. this guy seem like another wannabe, hopefully you'll post again in a week or whenever telling us the "kill" story.

i'm surprised this fool didn't ask you to race for pink slips...

As you can probably tell by the others, you should win the race. I drove my moms 95' cav for almost a year, nice and not really slow but you should be able to beat one.

If you've never raced your car, and he's a good driver(which I dout) he might have a chance against your 240. FWD cars are easier to launch than RWD too.

silviadriver, what's a zx2?

He will get you in the start but you will pass him in 3rd for sure, unleas he dosent stop before that, and think's that he has win. I hate people like that, when u start caching up they stop and put their hazard ligths.

p.s. do it in a back street with no other cars around.

2nd p.s. a back street with out pot holes and bumps.

Go to the track and have fun. If you loose who cares? It's just some idiot that has bragging rights. If you are a non skilled driver (i.e. shifting) I would practice hard launches w/ no wheel spin especially if you don't have a LSD.

Just remember to have fun and not get serious. There is no money at stake, right... So just be cool and make it a learning experience

zx2 used to be an upgrade to the ford escort if I am not mistaken. I think it has now replaced the escort as a whole. Ford says the new ones put out a whoping 130hp from a ford Zetec engine (anyone else see the humor in that name?)

AKADriver

The ZX2 was the two-door model of the Escort from '97 on. It's actually popular enough that they keep it in production even though the Focus has replaced all the other Escort models. It's not a bad car, really, they can be made quick with minimal amounts of work, bolt-ons really uncork it.

Both of our cars are 5-speeds.

Today he came up to me and said he wasnt ready to race to he wants to wait till next friday. I think something is fishy with this guy

Probably because he realized his predicament and wanted to keep his reputation(if he has one) for another week. I didn't have anyone like that at my school unfortunetly and I didn't get my 240 until after graduation. We did have the morons who would drive around the parking lot at WOT showing off that they can make their exhausts loud by drilling holes in the muffler.....I should have smoked them in the Crown Vic.

rwd are way easier to launch, theres SO much weight on the back end of the car to hold it down, unlike FWD cars that only have an engine and transaxle on the driving wheels.. you know a whole drivetrain on top doesn't help add any traction :/

yea rwd is easier to launch but i don't understand ur reasoning..weight ratios for cars are usually heavier in front than in back(cus engine is there of course) like 60/40 or 53/47(this is 240's weight ratio rite?) the reason rwd cars r easier to launch is cus they get more traction because when u set something in motion (i dunno the physics term) but u can see the back of the car dip down cus "force" is being thrown there..i think it's called inertia but haven't taken physics in a year and my explanations are a little confusing..but if u understand wat i'm saying then i'm happy =)

It's called weight transfer. It works against fwd cars and for rwd cars when launching.

There are a bunch of ricers around here with those things. They had a website called www.cavalierstyle.com, but I think the took it down.

the reason I said FWD car are easier to launch is, If you spin the tires too much in a RWD car the FWD car can take advantage, specially if you don't have lsd the car might swing a little to the side. Of course RWD cars make a lot better launches as long as you know what you doing.
I hope this make sence.

I guess i know what you're saying but don't forget though that FWD cars also have a weight transfer problem which gives them a huge disadvantage which i believe that someone has already mentioned. Wheel hop can be a big problem with FWD's

Just be sure to have a fat bald guy in your passenger seat, and when you start the race, have him say "Smoke 'em"

That way when you win, you can say you even had a fat bald guy in the car and then laugh at him.

haha I raced some guy in a base Cavalier in my mom's beige 97.5 Altima GXE AUTO. . and I wasted him. . haha not right off the line, mind you.. but at 15 mph, I was gone.

Trust me, you'll do fine.. you don't NEED to know how to even launch the car right to beat him. But do this sensibily, take it to the track if you can (no I'm not one of those people lol) but. . find a safe place to do it =)

well nobody has mentioned the specs yet...

if he has a Z24 i assume that is a 2.4 litre 4cyl, or is it 6cyl, prolly 4 but iono, and i think a z24 has 150ish hp

but the base models ahve like a 2.2 or something, and it's an entry level car so it prolly has like 110-120hp,

i dont kow much about cavalier but if he doesnt have a z24 then he also doesnt have a chance

Humm, Here is my input:

I race often, and I have raced a Cavalier Z24 (not a slow car) He has Intake, Headers, Straitpipes and some other bolt ons. And he beat me by a car lenght, and we were both equal at shifting, and i have a 90' 240, so with exhaust you have a better than i did, but if its stock and not Z24, you will blow the doors off him, and are you sure this kid even has a 5spd, he sounds like he is a kinda gay like that. Sounds like an Automatic racing. I think streetracing is damn near pointless, anyone can drive in a strait line, and if its how i think it is (that he has an auto) how hard is it to press a pedal, seriusly, ask him to go to the track, and see what he can do, it will be VERY fun. I racing a GT Sunfire, and he challenged me at school, and it raced him up to 110, and he was behind me the whole time, how funny

I didn't read any of the post, but all I can say is that you will beat him.

Some guy in a modded Sunfire (same car) tried to race me from a stop light (with my stock 95). He was no match for me......he was seeing my sexy taillights as I easily took him.
