View Full Version : Does nitrous require fuel upgrades?

Here is the deal. I had some thinking and got a plan change on the turbo. I'm not doing anything major till i graduate and get a job. after that i'm gonna get a 95-96 s14 with blown engine and spend money on it (97-98 convo, s15 sr, suspension). However, for those 1.5 years i gotta have some fun with the car.

So what i have in mind is put a t-kit for the 240 for around $1500 and run it at 4 psi so i don't have to do fuel upgrades. So my question is, if i throw a 50 shot of nitrous on top of that, will i have to do any extra work (espesially fuel upgrades) to the car in order to make it work? I don't know much about nitrous, so any help appreciated. Finally the setup is going to be ran with 2.5 intake piping (air to turbo and turbo to intake mani w/ no ic), revhard mani, 2.5" dp and stock exhaust.

You could always use the $2k (turbo and nitrous), as the first half of the sr motor.  Yes, you will need additional fuel for the nitrous to run, and it highly recommend the JWT nitrous ecu.  This will allow the timing to adjust under nitrous, and run your fuel.  IIRC, the JWT ecu is $595, and its an additional $495 for the nitrous program.  Then you'll need a couple hundred bucks worth of injectors, and an ignition system.  That will put you into the $3500 range, and s15 sr motors are in the $4000 range.
I'd just scrap the turbo and nitrous, and get the sr engine now.  Then, when you want to build a car, swap the sr into the new car.  Anyway... I answered a question and gave advice.  AIM me later.

NOS (http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/NOS/NOSNS/NOSzle.html)

I don't know if they have an application for us or not but I realy like this system.

Nitrous adds oxygen to the intake charge, you will always need to add more fuel...

BTW: i dare anyone to bitch about me calling this nos...

Sounds like a formula for disaster if you ask me.

I'm willing to learn though. I know what it is, i know how it works, yet i don't know every single detail. There is a fine distance between knowing how it works generally and being able to pin point every exact step of the way. So please, if you don't have anything to contribute, don't come off with smart ass remarks. Thanx

I take it you plan on bringing the car to the drag strip and nothing else? ... I would spend the 2k on suspension and an engine tune-up, but that's just me.

The 50HP from nitrous would be no different then if you got 50HP from raising your boost. So think of it like that, If you raised the boost high enough to gain 50HP would you need to upgrade anything? If you answer yes, then you got your answer.

Ok that was the answer i was looking for.

Adey, it's gonna be a daily driver with some kick. Then 1.5-2 years down the road i'm gonna sell it and get a 95 to seriously buld it up. I just don't have enough money right now for anything big, but wonna have some fun with the car <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

It's not a smart ass remark. It was a smart one. Adding nitrous without increasing fuel is a recipe for disaster. Unless you are running ridiculously rich which you won't be @4# boost on stock injectors and stock fuel pressure.

I don't agree with everyone steering you towards and SR. If you plan on junking the motor and are on a budget, I'd forget the turbo altogether for now and just go with a properly set up wet shot. You can always use it later on whatever engine setup you end up with.

It was a smart ass remark. He wasn't pointing out that just running nitrous was a disaster. He was pointing out that it's a disaster cuz i don't know how exactly it works. The point of the thread was that if it's worth it, i'd do my research, if not, i wasn't gonna bother.

Back on the topic though. I'm in college, i got a 2 more semesters (plus the remains of this one) to go. The car is taking away all my free time. That's why i decided i'm gonna put all the crazy hp/big money plans till i graduate. When i graduate and hopefully get a decent job, i'm gonna swap in the s15 sr in a 95 with a blown engine. Not cuz i wonna be jdm. Just cuz i will have the money to do it. I argued that KA is not worth swapping out to get the sr. I do like KA more than SR. Just cuz it's a .4L bigger. I on hte other hand do realize that sr will be safer and was designed to be much more sports oriented than KA. If in 2 years i didn't have enough money to get the s15 sr, i'd turbo the KA. Another side though is that i badly want a 6-speed. Now the only problem is that i won' last 1.5 years with a stock car. So the plan is to turbo the car for <$1500 to run ~4psi and it's very possible if i use used stuff. I right now do have enough money to turbo the car nicely. But i don't see the point if i'm gonna be selling it in 2 years (once the 95 with the SR will be complete). This way i'll still have a nice car and will prolly get most that i invested out of it. And if you ask why would i wonna sell the car - the price of my 240 is 10K right now. A price of a 95 with blown engine - 2500. Front end convo - 1500. Now i got 6000 lying around.....

Finally the nitrous question was that if i was able to do get a turbi for less than a thousand, i would run the 50 shot. But with all the upgrades required there is no way i'll be able to.
