Ok, here's the deal. I've got a presentation due thursday on japanese drifting culture. I'm working on editing a video of drift clips together, but I could REALLY use some more info on the whole culture that surrounds it. Info should be based more around japanese drifting culture than american, but all info is good.

TIA

how about writing its a thing where all car enthueist [sp? damn i suck at it] come together and do wat they love, drift.

that its the only thing they can do to escape everyday reality. be in a place of their own.

that they come to the backroads of the hills and enjoy themselves and push their cars to the limit before they leave, they do that becuz thats wat they love to do.

or say they are like a family, each look out and help each other.

i dunno if thats wat u were looking for "Transient" but yea hopefully it helps if not...aww shit

Try a google search and translate w/ babelfish. There is a lot of stuff out there. There are also quite a few websites and writeups by gaijin military kids (and a few actual members) that describe it all about as well as you are likely to find in English.

I hope that was a joke.
"TIA" is an acronym for "Thanks In Advance".

edit: on that note, try VRElectrique's page, and slide squad if you haven't already... it may or may not help, but sileightymanias page has a little bit of stuff. If nothing else, you can use his links.

Hi, what would you like to know? Could you give more specific questions? I grew up and lived in Japan for the last 18 years so I can help you some in this area. Just narrow the questions down a bit.

I'm not exactly sure how to narrow it down... I just mean the lifestyle. Obviously they drift, but I know there's more to it than that. What do they do when they're not drifting?

Well, I was never a hardcore drifter but some friends were. Most of the people worked normal jobs such as department stores, phone companies, etc. Nothing really big. I know of one person who saved up as much money as he could for his car by eating only Top Ramen. Also a lot of the people drive the cars they drift with as their everyday cars too. So a lot of the hooked up cars Japan actually have drivers that are good. Not just kids the are messing around.

Also, another thing, these people love there cars but fully understand the risks that come with it. I've seen many times people hit others, hit light poles, curbs, etc, and never shed a tear or raise their voice. Everyone is usually very helpful if someone is having trouble after a crash. Strangers will tow a strangers car home if he blew something. It's nice to see people so helpful.

I can't think of what else to say so try and ask more questions if you can.

Don't forget to put me in your bibliography! hehe

Cool, how well are drifters respected by most people in japan? Do they get the ladies pretty well?

Umm..., well, the normal everyday people probably don't know what they're up to so I don't think most people really have an opinion about them. Now, some people do think it's stupid. they say that the drifters are just out there to thrash there cars around and wear them out

Umm...ladies? Well, women don't really go out with guys for they're cars. There might be a few, but then again that number is the same anywhere. They're just everyday people, some guys might be the pimp and others just dorks. You can't generalize it, like "all guys who drift get all the ladies".

What do law enforcement officials have to say about drifting? Like do they have something like a drifting task force to stop drifting or something, like some places have here for street racing? Or is it mostly ignored?

Hey transient I'd like to see your report when you're done. =D

Street racing is cracked down on harder because it is a lot more dangerous and innocent lives can be lost. When it comes to street racing cops will park on the side of the roads where they race and leave their lights flashing while standig around with police sticks.

When it comes to drifing, where I was, it was mostly done at two industrial areas where it was just factories or docks. The only cars that go through there at night are other drifters or people who come to watch. Cops know what goes and too. They usually show up every 1-2 hours. They come up with lights off usually and someone will honk their horn(signal for cops). Thats when all the drifters and by standers hop back into their cars to take off. The cops just makes a couple of rounds to scare away everyone. If you tried to be tough and stick around, they'll hassle you by questioning you, taking your info down and stuff like that to scare you. Once in a while they'll impound a car. The cops leave after like 30 mins or so and then people slowly start coming back. It's an endless cycle.

The cops sorta prefer drifting because street racing was a big thing a while back and many people died. Drifting is a lot safer and it doesn't get in the way of normal motorists but the cops still have to make some show of authority and force before it gradually gets too out of hand. Thats why they make their rounds.

You don't want to start a drift session on HW58 (the main road on the island) or anything. Thats where Boso(biker gangs) come in, a whole different story. Police will crack down on any racing on main roads.

Hmm...what else...I dunno. Keep the questions coming!

Thanks man. I had always been curious about that. :P

Here, at least in my area, police would consider anything like that to be a sideshow, even if it's done at a secluded place with nobody else around. :\ I remember one time four police cars showed up where me and my friends were practicing. They came out pointing their guns at us, yelling at us, swearing at us, while police dogs barked like crazy. OMG they were going overboard. -_-; That was quite an experience. They let us go after we got a chance to explain to them that we were just practicing and show that we weren't a bunch of Riceboy street racers, but they still bitched at us and told us not to come back to that city. :\ Better than jail time or getting our cars impounded I guess.

Ah well no more of that for me. Looking forward to the upcoming drift school in this area next year. =)

Well, the presentation went pretty well. I didn't actually have to write a written report, I just showed some vid footage and talked about it. It seemed quite well recieved. They asked a lot of questions and I was able to answer em all. Thanx everyone

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area, in the East Bay, where laws are really tough on street racing and sideshows.

You'll have to show me the vids you used and give me a run-down on your presentation, Brian. Or we can make a swap and I'll show you my Primus presentation I did 2 years ago lol. Glad to hear it went pretty well.
