wouldn't the gear sets for the r200 differential accomplish this? maybe i'm totally mistaken but you can order some ring and pinion sets from courtesy nissan, http://courtesyparts.com/nismo/s13/s13_4.html

no opinions?

well, no.  it sounds like he wants closer ratios, not necessarily shorter.

so if you changed the final drive ratio it would make all the gears the same distance from stock but make the final drive shorter?

i'm kinda confused on how the final drive ratio in the rear differential affects gearing...

i'm getting a J30 rear differential, how will that affect the stock gearing of the 91 240sx?

like so:

Change the final drive gear, and each gear is then moved up or down the same amount.  For the case of the J30 diff in the 240SX, your revs will always be 4% lower for a given speed than they were, no matter what gear you're in.  The relationship between gears does not change.

What Itsuki wants is to make the gears closer, so the revs drop less when shifting.  Instead of making all the gears universally higher, he wants to make 1st gear a lot higher, 2nd somewhat higher, 3rd a little higher, and 4th gear can't be changed (it has to be 1:1).

uhm.. never heard of individual transmission gears being sold.. whole closer/wider ratio gearboxes but not the gears.. anyways it would probably cost more to get gears and to have em installed.. hmm, you guys claim to be 240 enthuaists but don't ever understand how rearends work :/

wow, loren, you're a dick.
Thanks for the info on the rear end, I'll know it from know on.
Loren, chill man. I asked a question in the appropriate place after searching for an answer. I didn't post a whole new thread to make an eyesore for you. maybe I should do a search on your username and see what type of contribution you make to the 240sx community? According to your statement about rear-ends you should know everything there is to know about your 240sx, about your rear end, your braking system, your independent suspension setups and how they all work, etc. &nbsp;Of course that kinda throws the whole idea of a "forum" out the window right? def (b)A public meeting place for open discussion.
def &copy;A medium of open discussion or voicing of ideas, such as a newspaper or a radio or television program.

I know that I'm a novice zilvia user, thats why I humbly ask questions that I can't find the answers for. But even in the areas i'm experienced in (which happens to be FWD SR20DE powered vehicles) I don't come off as a dick like you do. &nbsp; So please keep your comments to your self next time. &nbsp; You might scare off someone who came here to learn just like you did back in April.

btw, sig quote from Boondock Saints perhaps? &nbsp;(i heard there was a sequel in the works)

gear ratios (http://www.howstuffworks.com/gear-ratio.htm)
trannys (http://www.howstuffworks.com/transmission.htm)
differentials (http://www.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm)

VERY good information. &nbsp;I suggest you read it <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

You have to just ignore Loren, he is a dick and he knows everything there is to know about cars. If you know any less, you are a lesser being, thus worthy of his criticism.

thanks DSC,
I reread all that info again. &nbsp;Last time that I had read it was when I first started learning about my car and I was only concentrating on the FWD and now understand much more.
sorry for being snappy. maybe we should get Loren a punching bag with "honda" written on it ;-)

OS Giken makes individual gears
as long as you can make 2,300 individual dollars &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

exitsanity - those gears make a heck of a difference. &nbsp;i have the 4.36 in my car now. &nbsp; We had a discussion on the effects of rear ends in a thread about LSDs not long ago a search will probably bring it up.

<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'> &nbsp;Ummm, no. &nbsp;Plenty of cars have 4th or 5th (in a 6-speed) that are *not* 1:1 (Porsche 911 has a 0.92:1 5th, for example). &nbsp;That's just a standard combination. &nbsp;But there's no physical reason why you have to have a 1:1 ratio at any point in the box.
