View Full Version : The KA is making a NEW noise :ugh:

Okay, so I've been playing doctor to my KA for the past 6 months or so, hearing new noises, seeing new leaks, yadda yadda.. Well today I have a new noise. It sounds like a belt chirping, but isn't. Typically only happens above 1200rpms while driving, and doesn't seem to increase with speed, but the pitch changes a little once I get over 3000 rpms. After about 10 mins of driving, the sound is gone. I'm letting the motor cool back down and let oil settle and see if I can replicate the noise. I'm hoping its not oil deprivation in the head causing the cams to run dry and chirp against the journals.
Any ideas what to look for? Any more info needed? I can't get a sound clip right now, cause my camera doesn't do sound.

do you have an oil pressure gauge? and if it was the cams that were making the noise it should increase with speed. Have you had metal shavings in your oil? hmmm... good luck.

Yeah. Still doing it.
No oil pressure gauge, and no shavings in my oil that I can tell.
Maybe power steering pump seizing?

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the PS system. You check the fluid level in it?

I once had a PS pump bracket bolt come loose and made a chirping noise bc it was grazing the pulley, my pump ended up shitting the bed a short time after.

Fluid level doesn't go down. However, it is getting progressively darker and shittier smelling. Should I be able to see or feel any movement of the fluid in the reservoir? An update on the sound, drove home from work, no chirping.
What. The. Fuck.
The sound is coming from the driver's side of the motor though, at least that's what it seems like. Maybe my pilot bushing? I know the busing made a little noise on startup a few months back...
I swear, one more outburst from this car and I'm trading a local guy for his '00 Civic Si. Can't beat a honda with 50k miles when your 240 is playing mind games.

Have you tried to listen for the sound by getting the engine in the rpms from the throttle cable? It would probably be easier to diagnose instead of driving.

does it only make the noise upong startup and after soome drivnig it goes away? Does it start like 5 seconds after startup? if so i have the same issue and idk why? stumps me. I have great oil pressure too.

Yeah. I pop the hood, listen and rev. I can't pinpoint the source, and all my belts seems to be tight. No pulleys seem to be stalling. I even had my friend Eric listen and look with me. He's puzzled as fuck too lol.
And no, I can't hear it at idle. But after a few minutes of driving, the sound goes away.

Grab the PS pulley and move it in and out and side to side. with the belt off.

So pretty much look for play in the PS pump? What will this tell me, if the pump is worn out, and causing noises?

The PS pump should have no play and if you spin it side to side should not be making funky noises. And if you think thats its your cams making that noise (which i doubt it) you can open your oil cap and listen and make sure its getting good pressure. Just to make yourself feel better =),

I don't think its the cams. Opened the oil cap today to add oil (was almost a quart low, due to crank seal), and it didn't look dry in there. Its gotta be a pulley rubbing on something.

Pull the return off the PS Res and drain it. Refill with fresh ATF and see if it gets better. also note how fast it turns to shit.
