View Full Version : rx7 twin turbo engine in a s13?
ok when i first got my s13 i thought of different engine possibilities. a rx-7's was the first
dont know much about them but i know they are small and light.
this is just a thought and i would like to see other peoples ideas and thoughts.
i am pro sr though

Sound's cool, but I just would'nt want to deal with a rotary engine. There is no room for error when tuning one. Why not give it a try if you can find a good motor and feel like you could handle a rotary.

i feal the same as ca18guy
but if you go to the rx7 page and find out how much the instal would be and you have to go with the turbo
oh ya ca18guy like the new pic look forward to seeing it some days <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

My friend Eric has spent thousands of dollars on his RX-7 he has a T-78 turbo, Electromotive computer, all kinds of stuff. He has blown the engine 4 times, I repeat 4 times in like 6 months. This guy thinks he has all the bases covered and still is blowing motors. Everytime I go to the track a rotary blows up, I say stay far far away from them.

I love my Nissan, but I'm a huge Mazda fan. I say go for it. It tops out on the uniqueness scale.
i wont swap a rx7 engine in my car but a guy i knew did once in a datsun 510 as popular as those are so i just thought about it in a 240. like i said im biased and pro sr20
i love that moter even in my na auto 99 sentra se
i just wanted to see what you guys thought bout it.
of course i would needc the trans also a driveshaft, (no telling if it would be to long or short for the 240) to much fabrication and ish. motor mounts learning the engine. etc i know the sr so im happy with it and its capabilities.

Ive heard of people swapping the RX7 engine into a Miata tho........sound cool to me...but...might be dangerous.

a good friend of mine has a 94 rx7. he is pulling that engine and putting in an ls1. apparently there is a kit you have to install in the engine bay and it is a drop in affair. he tells me alot of people do this because they can't get big power from the rotary reliably. i mean like 500+ hp. since the ls1 is alluminum it isn't that much heavier, i think after all is installed it is 40lbs difference.

the only kids for a small block inside of an rx7 i know are for FC3S (86-91) 2nd gen rx7's.
i say go for it, it shouldnt be WAY too hard (much smaller engine, but not way too small, it should make your weight a tiny bit more biased towards the rear, making it closer to 50/50 weight dist. also, a series 5 (205hp, 89-91 rx7 turbo2) is only about $800 for full kit, $1000-1200 with trans and rear end and all. they can make a 68hp gain just on a full turbo-back exhaust system. once you get it in there, a replacement is cheap. very great engines, they even have a twin scroll turbo so they spool up real fast

also i noticed you meant twin turbo rx7, i'd say go with the FC because of price, and its basically the same engine except for the turbo setup, the manifolds (though an FD/3g turbo system and intake manifolds are a direct swap onto the FC/2g), and the engine mounting locations. they're pretty much the same engine totally internally, and have just as much potential in the end.

anyone think/know if an SR20 would fit in an FC's engine bay w/o too much work having to fix it up?

if you're going to do it, make sure you have a cooling system 2x what you think you will need

actually, the fd engine (s6) has more potential than the s5 turbo-II engine. it goes far beyond the engines just having different internals/turbo set ups. the fd engine has more robust corner seal springs and WAY larger ports. if you were going to go with the 3rd gen engine, I WOULD go for the 13b-re engine. THAT thing is a madman of a 1.3L (for simplicities sake) engine. as far as tuning is concerned. its not as...ACCEPTING as i would say a z32 engine. they can make GREAT power, (ive seen guys make about 700hp on a 2-rotor). and as far as im concerned, its a hell of a lot easier to work on. i dont get piston engines that well. theyre simpler to comprehend as well. the only thing is that you MUST HAVE ADEQUATE FUEL!!!! if you dont, YOU WILL BLOW IT!!! ive never blown an engine, but ive always run rich. also, it can make some nice gains from simple upgrades. you can get about 50+hp from a full turbo-back exhaust. the twin scroll system was a nice feature when they were new, but when you start deleting emissions crap, then youll want to get rid of that, and just go with a newer turbo. also, BIG A/R's are whats needed for these things. like, .96-1.05 would be typical. the exhaust flows from these things are immense to say the least. but, if you take care of them, they can last you for awhile. just make sure you tune it correctly, and COOLING is a must along with fuel tuning/ignition timing. theyre just fickle engines. thats what most people forget about. they just strap on big turbos and screw up their engines. hey, if youre going for massive power, you actually need to THINK when you tune with these engines. people just expect it to run perfectly when they strap on huge turbos--just really stupid. if they have money, i say let'em screw up their engines. not me, i'd rather do it the correct way. get all your essentials if you do that, THEN get the turbo/intercooler upgrades. you need "insurance" with these engines.
