been a member of the site for quite some time now...rarely post but its all good. figured i'd post a build thread for my car and get some opinions from everyone....i finished the car exactly 1 year from the purchase date which was kinda weird lol...all of it was done in a 2 car garage by 3 people who have decent car knowledge, less body work knowledge, and alot less common knowledge lol.... car will be undergoing serious reconstruction soon...new wheels, motor, paint, etc. Fun car to mess around in, but looking for more power...

so it started off when i won my car off ebay....

decided that this blue was not for me and the engine wasnt clean enough after wire tucking a rotary and making it look good so....it had to get redone as well....

next i decided that i really didnt like this front end at all either so i took it off as well and prepped the body for paint

after waiting 3 months for my kit that was supposed to be shipped out in 2 weeks it FINALLY arrived...which is mainly what had taken so long. I get home from school and goto open the box and this is what i find....

anyone who knows me and how anal I've been about my whole buildup knows very well that that is not the version select bumper I ordered. I call the guy and go at it w/ him bla bla bla he wont refund said he told me he couldn't get version select bumper, but would send me a similar style... :roll: Needless to say that never happened and you all can be the judge of the similar style he sent compared to the actual version select bumper. Least he sent the right sideskirts and rear bumper.

Wheel specs are 17x9 all the way around with a +22 offset for those interested

got the car in the garage and on jackstands awaiting paint....

resprayed the valve cover as well and made a spark plug cover also.

thats pretty much the whole build up process on it...not to bad for 3 ppl who didn't have major experience...no where near perfect...many flaws in the paint, buff job, still needs window trim...etc. but its a start at least.

here are some of the more recent pics i had taken by a few local friends. no editing done and show the actual color of the paint quite well with the 1st being with light, and the 2nd the color it is in a dull/outcast day

haha i am a college student at mtsu....work 30+ hours a week, and do jobs on the side for people. just 20 years old and still learning. can proudly say it was payed for by myself. before this i had a 2000 celica gts i had been piecing together a turbo kit for which i had about 2500 in....decided i didnt want the car anymore so i payed off the remaining balance on it and sold it....ending up having about 9000 bucks to start off with and then as time progressed spent more money on it.

haha thanks alot man. but for having never sprayed clear coat before i'd say he did pretty good. we always just spray single stage stuff....mainly paint bikes and stuff, but it was definitely an experience. live and learn...main imperfections are on the rear bumper, and passenger side rear quarter....clear is alot thinner than paint lol...and the valve cover...no way i can make up my mind on it...i miss the anodized purple, but i also like the diamond flake on it now....oh well that motor will be long gone soon as i find a buyer.

Those front fenders look like the raceonusa ones which suck i have the sameones. Dude ur car looks almost exactly the same as my car i have the same kit and conversion just diffrent rims and my car color is the r34 bayside blue which looks pretty similar to urs they can pass off as twins i swear lol good job tough.

the fenders are some cheap ass fiberglass ones that came with the original front end conversion from grounddynamics. lots of bodywork and such to make them fit somewhat decent.

the reason the car got resprayed and front end conversion was because the passenger side fender had been hit and i've always like the s15 front end alot more than zenki.

haha metal fenders come from taking s14 and s15 oem fenders and welding them together. if i would have had good s14 fenders to begin with i probably would have, but the passenger side was kinda dorked up.

and as far as a living....i work at afterhours formal wear, which is now known as mw tux and i also work at target part time now. so combined about 40 hours per week and then a full time student in the fall and spring. in spare time i do odd jobs to cars....tune ups, minor body work.....misc welding for people, and the best money comes from rebuilding rotary engines.

ah cmon gotta give em some credit. i love those things....got one sittin around for me just havent had time nor money to do it. will be doing a major buildup on one of the mazda repu trucks over the summer so stay tuned for that as well. 400+whp in a truck that weighs less than an s14.

He NEVER drives it. Just rubs it with a diper. Rode in it once, if the one you build has 500hp, dam holy fuck dam.. that will be REAL quick.

Haha, ive been around rotaries my entire life, so im probably one of the biggest RE whores ever. Yeah man, id definitly be interested in some more pictures of it. I found a decent one here in SoCal, but im not too sure I could sell my GTUs daily driver to fund a REPU project.

repus are great man. at every rotary meet we go to, its a huge hit and people are so interested in it, however if they knew the hell we put it through and what we did in it, they'd probably cry lol

welllllll....i guess its time for an update on the car....the sr has been yanked and sold to a buddy of mine and the car will now be 2jz powered. Motor will be here this friday actually.

Plans for the 2j are....stock block, 67mm turbo for response and still be able to get me into the 600whp range on kill mode. Will be going with an r154, supporting fuel mods, aem, and everything else needed. Full build specs will be posted once I finalize everything for sure.

Currently the car is stripped down right now for repainting. going for the pearl white off the is350's and newer lexus'. The advans have been sold as well, and I'm picking up a set of Work CR KAI's off a friend sometime within the near future. Hoping to have the car done by the summer meet for import alliance 09.

small update for anyone still watching....took off intake manifold, removed harness, and almost got the stock twins and manifold off. harness will be done in about 2 weeks hopefully.

finally got the stock twins off the motor, and got the crank pulley and everything off as well so i can change the water pump....ordering my cams and head stuff this week so i can go ahead and have the head ready to go. cleaning garage out today since its damn near filthy and on sunday gonna try and get the motor in.

found out the paint i wanted was going to be quite expensive, so currently thinking of other color options....anyone who has any feel free to throw em at me...but for my latest purchase for the car....

I am assuming you cant go any lower up front because of the fiberglass fenders? meaning if you rub that it wont flex, it'll crack.

Also, whats the rest of your footworks setup consisting of? C/Os? Arms? tire size? Dif?

cant go lower yet, because of springs...no coilover system yet, hopefully i will be able to go metal fenders as the fiberglass ones are annoying as hell. all stock suspension as of now, but it will all be replaced before the car is ready to accept the beating it will be getting.

this time i will be trying to get some 315's on the rear on some 9.5 inch wheels. hoping i can make it happen because i will need them for sure as i already had traction issues with 275's on an sr w/ bolt ons and 15psi at times.

It's hard to see the flake in it, but its there when it's in direct light. The color is a custom metallic gold i had mixed up.

Welllllll as far as updates go, i started shaving the bay recently, and I'm waiting on Adler's lazy ass to weld up the holes so I'll be able to do more work. Yeah, I can definitely take some better pics of what all I'm doing as far asd the shave goes. Those pics are copied from my local forum which is basically tech illiterate and could care less about the actual process.

And as far as the harness goes, I think I'm going to locate the fuse box in the trunk. I've seen your incredible harness work and wish I had the time or knowledge to be able to do something along those lines. There's not a whole lot of people on this site who actually go through the trouble to do the tuck and shave on the engine bay, but I generally pay close attention to those who do.

alright, here goes a pretty decent update for those who have asked about the shaved bay, etc.

Gonna post up a few pics of the in progress work. All the shinier areas are gonna be where I've grinded down the welds and in the colorful bumpier areas, you can see where it still needs to be grinded down with the angle grinder.

As far as the holes I'm welding up, anything that wasnt a mounting point for a headlight, fender, intercooler pipe, or anything that I will still be using basically got welded up. The fuse block will be relocated to the trunk to clear up even more room in the bay.

I apologize for the not so in depth pics, but alot of these were taken before I realized people were even interested in seeing the details of the shave and what not so from here on out I'll try and get some better photos for you guys.

That's where at one point a harness went in from fenderwell to inside the bay iirc. it's honestly been a while since I have messed with that. I think that will be the hardest to get smoothed out and nice looking, but I just didn't like dealing with that gaping ass hole there.

closeup of the radiator support where a thin layer of bondo was layed to fill any small imperfections from grinding that were made. the thinner you lay it, the less you have to deal with sanding off.

more passenger side goodness....this time a bit closer to the frame rail. still deciding if i wanna do a brake line tuck or not. if so, there will be a few more holes I need to get welded closed, but atm I'm indecisive. Suggestions?

and, how it currently sits....there are a few more holes I need to weld up on the radiator support, and smooth out all the bondo, but its close to being satisfactory for me.

As far as details go on how to actually do the shave, here's how I've been doing it....take an angle grinder or wire wheel (sandpaper is also acceptable), and scuff all the areas that you plan on welding so you can get access to the metal better. Have someone who's at least a decent welder spot weld on the holes.

Next get an angle grinder and grind em down as smooth as possible. This step will take alot of time and patience, but the closer you get, the less bondo/filler you have to use which is a GREAT thing.

Lastly, just lay thin coats of bondo, or your choice of filler on the areas that need some work. The less you can use the better, because it's gonna be alot harder to crack metal, than it is fiberglass/bondo/etc.

I don't claim to be the best at any of this, so don't bash if this "isn't the way its supposed to be done". everyone has their own ways of doing things, and this is my best way so far.

And as far as an update with the motor goes....I finally got the waterpump on and got the timing belt back on as well. Only took me and my friend about 30-45 mins. And we finished up the dual pump assembly fitting that I needed tonight. Main issue with that is that the hose that comes off the fuel pump is a 5/16th. -6an line is waaaay too big to clamp onto the fuel pump, and 5/16th is waaaaay to small to go over a -6an fitting. So we made a solution.

This will allow me to use the 5/16th from the fuel pumps and then the -6an hose will fit over the larger section, and I can use my -6an fittings now.

But I'm off to bed now. Been working on the new daily all week and it's about 2-3 hours away from being done and drivable. 88 rx7 FTW!

well its been quite some time since i updated this thread. Christmas kinda wore me out and I spent quite a bit of money so things have been slow going trying to pay for school and get all my funds back on track. I finally got the motor in tranny in the car together for the first time and I'm very happy with how it fits.

The only major thing that sucks is that I seemed to have misplaced a few parts....tranny x-member, so i had to make a new one once we got the motor in...both my inline fuel filters, my blow off valve, my fpr, and my wastegate fittings. Everyone loves losing parts right?

I also started on my headliner which looks pretty good so far....wrapped it in carbon fiber so hopefully i can finish it within the next few weeks.

Needing a few more gaskets and to paint a few more parts before the motor is completely finished, so by the end of the month I should have my money back up, tax returns in, and waiting on my bonus at work so I will be very happy come that time.

luckily since i spend a few hours a week in a machine shop, i got the idea to use the lathe and mill to my advantage and make a custom shift knob and adapter for the lulz:

well we put the motor in the car a while back, got everything hooked up, wired in resistors for the injectors, got all the fuel lines ran .... long story short it got fuel pressure and would turn over just fine, but wouldnt spark or start up

gave it about a 2-3 month break, and my friend kit and i decided to mess with it (meanwhile, mwilloughby87 was cleaning up an sr'd s13 hatch that he bought and cleaned up for sale) .... and here are the results:

- wiring harnesses have been completely pulled out, de-loomed and will be redone to fit the fuses, relays, etc. inside the car
- ordered all the looming and sleeving necessary for the wire tuck and rerouting
- headliner was wrapped in Bride gradiation fabric last week to match the seats
- driver's side seat rail was ordered to enable cage mock-up
- wheels were bought a couple months ago [18x9,10.5 +15]:

- ordered 245s for the front, 275s for the rear just to break the car in on ... hoping for 305s or so out back when those are worn off

it will go to a local shop for a custom cage soon, then all thats needed is reassembly and paint!

the blue was very nice, but I gotta do stuff different if I'm going to change the whole setup. It may come back in bite me in the ass later on, but if i don't like it, I can always repaint it.

yea i think you shoulda picked one color and did everything up in it. the wheel lip too. i dunno i just never seemed to quite like color matched lip's/body. you car kinda pulls it off in some of the pics. but i imagine it looks 1000x better in person.

i know its outplayed but with my blue im dressing up the bay with white parts ie; ic pices, valve cover etc.. aswell as either trading for a set of white wheels or respraying my XXR's white.

im not ragin on ya at all, i dig it.. just alittle thrown off

exactly why im selling half my stuff in my build. lol things pop up and i change my mind or i see something and im like dammnnnnn. id love to have my cage white, itd look so good with my blue. but white wheels and accents will do enough.
