View Full Version : Exhaust Question: What Isn't "Free Flow"??

In Quebec, cops are cracking down extremely hard on mufflers and tints. There is a special "unit" that only gives tickets for illegal mods all day long.

In Quebec, exhaust systems that are "free flow", as the cops call them, are illegal, which means that my Dart Izumi will get some attention...

I need to find a 3" aftermarket exhaust that is not "free flow". The cops check this by sticking a tape measure in the tip and seeing if it hits something in the muffler. The exhaust also has to have a resonator.

What aftermarket exhaust would pass this test?

I was thinking about the RSR ExMag or the Circuit Sport dual tip one that looks like the stock exhaust. Would these pass the test? Any other suggestions?

Thanks you for any info!!!!

Also, if anyone plans to come to Quebec, Canada, especially the Montreal region this summer, your car better be stock or they will fuck you up. They are towing a lot of cars because they are to low or random shit like that.

the circuit sports is your best bet, I think they're lookin for coffe cans. I run one on my 13 with SR in california and its sounds reallygood its quiet though but cops leave me alone.

"free flow" can be interpreted as anything but a stock exhaust if the cop decides. That is bullshit man that leaves it up to the cop to decide whether or not your exhaust is legal.

Well the main this is I need an exhaust that won't let the tape measure through, anything else they say, I'll take them to court.

Will the CS exhaust let the tape measure through? Can someone who has a CS exhaust please check for me? Same thing fo rthe ExMag, if anyone has one, could you please tell me how far inthe tape measure goes before it hits something?

By the way, I'd rather buy a premade exhaust they have to have one made.

Thanks for the help guys!!

^^^You just answered your own question! It will only "not let the tape measure through" if it is a baffled muffler. Any straight through design muffler is illegal! Pretty damn simple. All you need is an exhaust that uses a baffled muffler.

get a muffler type with internal chambers or at least something that you cant see light from 1 side to the other.

I know I need a baffled muffler! lol

What I am asking is which exhaust systems have baffled mufflers??
Do the ExMag and CS exhausts have baffled mufflers??

Well then you should have asked "what exhausts use baffled mufflers" rather than "what is a free flowing exhaust". Those are two completely different questions right there! You really want us to hold your hand and guide you to the perfect exhaust? Dude figure it out! It's really not that hard to do that.

I nowhere ask what a free flow exhaust is, if you properly read my first post, I ask what exhausts would not let a tape measure pass through the muffler.

If you don't want to help me, fine, but don't go saying I'm asking for help wrong because you can't read.

All I'm asking is if someone with either a CS or ExMag exhaust can go stick a tape measure in there muffler and tell me how far it goes before it hits something, is that so complicated?

I'm sure if I type "how far does a tape measure go into a Circuit Sport muffler on an S13 before it hits something?" into Google, I won't get many hits.

Actually you didn't ask that question untill now! And the question about "free flowing" is right in the damn title!

I believe I did ask the question.

The question in the title doesn't ask what free flow means, it asks what exhausts are not free flow.

It is EASY to figure out what exhausts are free flow! The muffler construction is usually in the technical specs of the exhaust! Any muffler that is baffled is not free flow, but you say you already knew that so why are you asking what exhausts are not free flow? You know that you need a baffled muffler and you are too lazy to search for the exhausts you are interested in on google! You are wasting everyone's time!

KA-T will need a bigger exhaust of some kind.

How am I owned? Did you read my repond to his post? Tool.

And why do I need to drive a Honda? Because I want a quiet exhaust that won't get me pulled over?

I have yet to find any technical information on either of those exhausts and have looked on google. Websites that sell the CS exhaust say it has a "high flow" muffler, is that baffled? Who the hells knows. And even the RSR website doesn't have decent tech info on the ExMag.

The only exhaust I've found is baffled is the BRM one, but they also say it's a "straight through" design, what the fuck?

God help these companies could try to put a little technical info on their website that doesn't contradict what they say in their previous paragraphs.

are they going to pull you over for just having a exhaust?
gut the shit out of your stock exhuast and let them test that.
then there gona think all 240sx have free flow exhaust haha.

stick with stock and put 3 inch piping on it haha.

i have a fujitsubo, kakimoto, rsr exmag all free flow. you can stick something thru all the way.
paint them black , it will be hard to tell if there stock or not.

Like I said in my first post, they have special units here that stake out a different place in the city each day and pull all modded cars over. They started last week cause the winter is over and in the last 2 days, they've given out about 50 tickets for tints, exhausts and illegal side markers and towed about 5 cars for being to low. This will go on all summer.

They've given exhaust tickets to a bunch of MazdaSpeed3s and SRT-4s and 350Z with STOCK exhaust. These are easily won in court, but they are still handed out. Trust me, they will pull me over for no reason, especially since my car is slammed.

Never come to Quebec, it's the worst place in North America.

nope, BRM is straight through. i could roll a golf ball from the head to the exhaust tip if it weren't for the cat. they might be able to put a flowmaster muffler on instead of magnaflow. magnaflow mufflers are all straight through, flowmaster has some decent baffled ones.

not that it matters, but that law is shitty. it should be illegal. the only things that matter with an exhaust is the noise and emissions (that's debatable though). how far you can put a tape up an exhaust has no direct bearing on noise. it's only a test you can do in the field.

just weld a piece of mesh inside your muffler.

Have someone cut out a section of the muffler and weld in a steel pin to go across, it shouldn't hurt any flow as exhaust gases have cooled at the tip anyways and it'll stop the tape measure.

the magna flow from flow masters is an s type muffler dont know how would sound though they are made for trucks oh wait you have a turboed truck motor lol just kidding

Cause if I can't find a decent baffled muffler, I'll just stick with my Dart Izumi. I'm not ganna give up the sweet dart for something that is just as illegal. lol

And yes it is the dumbess shit ever, but the city needs money to take each other out to lunch. Assholes.

Thanks for the help guys.

So just a thought... why not through the factory exhaust on and have an electric cut out at the down pipe? It seems as you will get pulled over just for a set of aftermarket wheels so the can check out your car... factory exhuat with a 3 inch down pipe and cutout. It will be even better for power with your turbo setup anyways...

hahaha thats the test cops used to do to motorcycle dudes decades ago. biker dues then used to weld in a nail or stick across the piping so the cops beat-down-stick couldnt fit up the tailpipe and it appeared legal. lol, stupid cops.

hey just weld a piece of mesh on the end/tip of your exhaust so they cant even try the damned test.
or have a shop put in an S-bend, lol...
have your tip all like this ~~~~~~~ so they cant fit anything up it.
rofl.
hey I guess a bosozuku tip would be perfect, they'd need a 5 foot long stick to even begin to reach the muffler from the end of a boso tip!
lol.

I hate some car laws.
they suck.

Haha, that would get do the trick, albeit pretty obvious. :coolugh:
Mesh tak welded down inside the tip sounds like a good plan that wouldn't require a whole lot of effort and could be removed if necessary later on.

They know about the mesh thing and if you put some mesh in there and they have a slight doubt you did, they give you a ticket. Their philosophy is "give everyone tickets, the innocent people will fight them".

I think it worst in cali. They hear you or see a shiny exhaust, you get a ticket. At least you get some kind of test.

In canada, is there something similar to BAR or State Ref? If they have one, I think they would make way more money.
