Has any one of you advanced their ignition timing and experienced any knocks? How large was the advancement?
irena i did it to my 99 se-r no knocks i advanced it to 17 from stock 13-15
you can hear the pinging its noticeable

To my knowlege, pings and knocks are the same... what octane fuel are you running?
ohh yeah forgot that 93 on my se-r nothin less you can get by with 89 but do not and i repeat DO NOt go with 87 you will feel a total difference in power and just plain drive the car sucks my dad put 87 once and i knew it before i even asked him what he put in
and yeah pings knocks are the same you'll hear the lifters

when i had my S13 I kicked the ignition timing all the way over (didn't even bother checking the degree... couldn't rotate the dist. any further anyways) and added 2 bottles of octane booster to premium (94 octane) fuel. Lost ALL low end power.... the sucker loved redline, and I think it would have stayed on power well past that. Didn't ping at all as far as I could tell, but it seemed out of the useable power band. It's been a while since I've had my S13, but I remember somewhere around 23 degrees being a target mark with no octane booster.

What about high-end power, did you notice anything at all?

just playing with it, advancing and retarding the ignition seemed to make the powerband itself shift slightly. I had 2.25" catback exhaust to a straight through universal muffler, with a home made intake (just simple piping to the MAF with a cone filter). That car was ALL high end power..... I wish I had dyno'ed it, but from what I could tell by my butt the power never fell off up to 7k. It might have been the '91-early '92 cams at work..... guess we'll never know since the car is totalled now.
Also... I took down a number of cars with it... including a few Integras. Most notably, I was pulling harder on a GSR at the HIGHER ends of my gears..... a small testament to exactly how much power that car was making up top. I'm guessing I was doing around 170 crank, judging by what my car does now (0-60 was definitely faster in my S13) at a dyno'ed 165 crank HP S14.

That's pretty cool.
It makes perfect sense that the powerband changes: you are advancing spark timing and power output (not much...).
Anyone else with comments on this?
on sr20de's the power is felt on higher rpms
thats my comment on it
