So I'm checking out an s13 that I know of that's for sale, it's an '89 hatch. It is for a VERY reasonable price ($300), but it's an auto. No rust, it is an oklahoma car.
The problem it is having is that it has a knock coming from the bottom end and he thinks that it's a bad oil pump. Also the oil light flashes on and off sometimes when driving. When he drives uphill the car loses power and knocks bad, but when driving in a straight line at a constant RPM it has no knock. He hasn't driven it since the knock came about.

What would you guys guess this would be?

Thanks for any and all help

Matt

EDIT: I've also got to drive this car 110 miles back to my house and I really don't want to waste $300 of my money and having it die on the highway. What do you all think?

Rod knock.

It won't make it that long.

There's a high probability that the block will spit out the rod on your way home.

Yeah I figured I'd repaint it, fix oil pump and then resell to make a grand or two off of it. I was also considering an sr20 swap, but I don't have the tools or confidence to get it done.

So you think it's rod knock for sure and if I replaced the oil pump it would still be done for?
