arp head head stud snaped at 60 ft lbs

finally putting my head back on, torque the studs in order sequence and in stages from low torque and up. when I was on my 60 ft lbs stage it snapped # 5 stud (from fsm) 3 threads left on the stud and the rest is stuck in the block. the stock ones were on there over 100 ft lbs. arp is sending me a new set but arp head studs snaping at 60? never a worry to me. drill bits wont get it so im just gonna use my spare block. anyone have bad experience with arp?

You sure that you had ARP? Yes, they will be almost impossible to drill out. You are lucky to have a spare block. I have installed 3 sets of ARP head bolts KAs. Never had an issue.

Where you trying to torque the studs into the block, or trying to torque the head bolts?

Did you lube it properly with moly lube or 30w oil? How can the stock ones be on there be over 100ftbs? Ive reused my ARP head studs 4 times at 85ftlbs with no problems.

steped torqued yes. moly lube yes, new arp yep. was doing the torque on the fastener nuts, didnt even hear the wrench click and it was set at 60.

Didn't have a problem with my studs in the KA other than when I had to remove the head a second time, a few of the studs came out
with the nuts.
I'm just not looking forward to re-torquing them.

machine shop should be able to take it out easy, well since the motor was headless it took less then an hr to yank it out. hopefully my studs come on monday so i can assemble it all back.

damn.. my only thought would be.. when was the last time the torque wrench was calibrated? thats nuts..

let's not forget nothing is perfect. this could be a defective unit that made it through their rigorous quality control. it's called a manufacturer defect.
i've broken a snap-on wrench before trying to remove a brake braket. which isn't exactly known to break drop forged wrenches. right where it broke there was a small air bubble.

these things CAN happen. but this appears to be the only explanation. you got a bad egg it looks like.

yeah dont forget you definitely want to double check your torque wrench, yikes, that coulc be faulty and lead to greater problems if all of your other bolts are set wrong.

drillbits should help you drill down into the arp stud, then weld something onto it so remove it, or drill and tap it with a left hand bolt thats super strong and remove it that way.

hah, yea that sucks. i definitely wouldnt chance the new set of arps with that torque wrench. you never know! g/l

the wrench is a craftsman. i mean it barely felt like 60 ft lbs. not saying i can feel accurate torque through my arms but everyone knows how 80 ft lbs feels like. it was like half. wrench set at 60 and i didnt even get close. when i took off the remaining ones, I set the wrench to 70 and they came right off without clicking. arp was nice enough to send me 1 replacement stud. im just going to warranty them at work for a new set.

Damn even if the torque wrench is somewhat defective, ARP studs shouldnt just snap off. Sounds like you know what youre doing so im sure you know the difference in feeling between 60 lbs and anything higher than 100 lbs.

So im with everybody else, you lucked out on some bad juju. Hopefully its just one stud and not the whole set. You would be the first person ive heard off to snap a one of these.

Did you hand thread the studs into the block? ARP says NOT to torque the studs themselves. Following the Nissan stud torquing procedure on ARP studs might have caused the issue. Or maybe there was a spot that wasn't lubed enough and your torque wrench was measuring thread friction? Many many what ifs... Sucks to hear though. Get back on the horse though. :D
