So my check engine light came on (96 KA) and upon pulling the codes i got speed sensor, and knock sensor (cylinder #1).

Now i don't want to go and replace the knock sensor if thats not the problem. I don't think it is because for the last month i have a knock that sounds like its coming from the head.

After the car warms up and i have driven it for a few miles the knock is completely gone...but once the car cools down and i start it again, it comes back.

Any ideas on where to start?

could be a lifter knock. I'm not too familiar with these engines but it sounds like a hydralic lifter bleeding then it takes a while to charge up and the knock goes away. As for the knock sensor a smog tech once told me that a knock sensor code is always present in nissans but it doesnt trigger the mil light. Don't know if he was right, but I've come accross them all lot, and I've never replaced a knock sensor.

Last time i pulled my codes was for my O2. And there was no knock code. So thats not true.

The ECU won't throw a KS code if your engine is knocking.

The purpose of the knock sensor is to "listen" for knock in the engine below a certain RPM range and then switch to a richer fuel mixture to compensate.

If your ECU is throwing a KS code it means that your KS is either FUBAR or the wiring is crap.

Good Luck!

being a 96,obd 2?, could be a false code. Erase them and drive it for 3 or whatever drive cycles till the light comes back on. If it comes on right way... Its a hard code and most likely your main problem

Not true. A code 34, knock sensor, can relate to numerous things from a faulty plug wire to bad gas. It's tripped when it hears knock, true, but that doesn't mean the sensor is bad. Usually a fresh tank of gas is all you need. I've seen the code a hundred times on dozens of cars but have never replaced the sensor.

Listen to project (former R240NA), he knows his shit. My experience with this code (both a OBDI S13 and OBDII Altima) was the knock sensor pigtail. The pigtail harness and the KS were replaced and the code went away (after clearing). My FSM ('96 model as well) says the KS will not throw the light. Lights on for the Speed sensor.
