WARNING long post
1. I recomend that you decide what color you want to go with before you buy the primer because if you use a black primer and want to paint it a lighter color then it will take many coats to reach the color u want.
2. The best primer in my opinion is PCL poly primer its really thick but you dont have to thin it down and it can fill in small sandpaper swirls and scratches thats what i used but make sure you mix it properly and paint it after you prime because i ran primer for about six months and its rusting through because it holds moisture because its so thich but other than that it good

alright man if you want to paint it red your going to want to choose a light primer light gray if its a lighter red if you use a dark primer then you will get a darker red. NAPA has a good 2 stage paints at real good prices. usaully 2-3 coats of primer is good then sand it down with 400grit sandpaper by hand until all the rough sports are sanded out and everything looks even. then your going to want to take reducer and wipe the car down to remove anything that may cause the paint to orange peel or not adhear right. after thats all said and done your good to spray

Just use a light grey or white primer. That'll be fine for any base you put over it.

Pick a color first then do the body work. Don't wait because primer is not clear coat. It was not made to fight uv rays or water(its porous so that causes rust). The sun will eat it up and u just waste all that $$. If ur going with red then buy a white primer an use a black guide coat to block the body before final inspections. Do it if u want a straight body! After that theres no turning back unless u want to waste more$$ by doing this u'll save money and do less work. Buying bright colors and putting them on dark primers can cuase bleed trough. If ur spraying red i'd advise u to do a light coat then lay ur base coats to prevent bleeding. Oh and for primer everything is good just no autozone/kreagen rattle can primer. Everyone has their prefence. I like nason but if u want the best i'd go earlscwhab brand primer/filler(sp) a gallon weighs like 30 pounds since it has so much material in it but cost around 300 a gallon. stick with the same company on ur primer/base/clear to prevent problems in ur paint. they are systematically designed to work together. never mix unless u know what chemical/additives ur using like urethane/poly urethane/ acrylic/enamals

If its red and you want to paint it red thats all you do. Primer your repairs, wet sand then paint. You could get some red sealer if you want to lock in minor imperfections, let it flash off good then hit wth three or four coats of a 2k single stage red. Wet sand and buff the dirt nibs and call it a day.
